Tennessee Stage Company: Julius Caesar

Monday, July 30, 6:30 p.m., “Julius Caesar.” William Shakespeare’s play, performed by the Tennessee Stage Company of professional actors under the direction of Tom Parkhill, is one with which most people are familiar because it is required reading in high school English courses. Bring the family for this performance--OUTDOORS on the front lawn of the library, so bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy this performance.

The public may bring picnic lunches or cold drinks other than alcohol. No alcohol is allowed on library property. The library’'s Bookmark,Café will have cold beverages, specialty drinks and snacks available up until 8:30 p.m.

If rain occurs and persists to cause cancellation of the performance, the rain date for the performance is Monday, August 6, at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the libraryÂ’'s parking lot, parking is also available in the public parking lots next to The Daily Times building (across the pedestrian bridge) and in the Harper Street parking lot across from First Tennessee Bank.

This performance is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

Tennessee Shines Radio Show: Shadow Ridge and Caroline Smith & the Sleeps

Tennessee Shines Radio Show presents:
July 30: Shadow Ridge and Caroline Smith & the Sleeps

Led by guitarist and vocalist CF Bailey, East Tennessee’s own Shadow Ridge makes some of the best traditional bluegrass heard anywhere in the world. Their fifth and latest CD is Hillbilly Big Shots.

Indie folk band Caroline Smith and the Sleeps hail from Minneapolis, Minnesota, where an 18-year-old Caroline had a residency at the same bar where Elliott Smith, Mason Jennings and Conor Oberst established their reputations as singer-songwriters of note. Her lilting Midwestern voice is charming audiences coast to coast. Caroline and bandmate Jesse Schuster will perform as a duo.

Advanced tickets for all shows scheduled for July and August are $10, available now at BrownPaperTickets.com. Remaining tickets are sold at the door on the night of the show, while supplies last. Doors of the Knoxville Visitor Center open at 6:15 p.m. and the show begins promptly at 7 p.m.

In July and August, students get in free by showing their valid student IDs at the door. Children 14 and under accompanied by a parent are admitted free of charge.

Bliss Home will feature Callie Farmer for July's First Friday. A reception will be held at Bliss Home, 29 Market Square, from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, July 6th. Callie is currently working on her MFA in Studio Art and Printmaking at Bradley University in Chicago, Illinois. Callie's most recent work, primarily in intaglio, invites the viewer to see her interpretation of the world through new and creative printing techniques. Callie's work intends to 'show the beauty in the overlooked images all around us.'

SUMMER CAMPS
Ages 8-12, Spa Camp
Monday-Tuesday, July 2 and 3 (two days), 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., $50.00
Instructor: Elise Murphy
Everyone loves a little luxury! Join us in this twoday class and learn to make your own spa creations! From scrubs and soaps to candles and creams, we'll blend traditional Appalachian techniques with the hottest pampering trends. We'll even add our own special touch to the bags, boxes, containers and jars. This class is not recommended for students with allergies or sensitive skin.

Ages 8-13, Acrylic Canvas Painting, Mixed Media, & painting with a Palette Knife Monday-Friday, July 9-13, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, $80.00

If you love to draw and paint and try new art mediums this class is for you! During this class students will complete a canvas painting in acrylics. We will explore and create a mixed media collage using different materials, stencils, paint and paper. One of the projects will be to experience painting on a board with molding paste and acrylic paint using a plastic palette knife.

Ages 8-13, Basketry
Monday-Friday, July 9-13m 1:00-4:00 p.m. $80.00
Instructor: Nancy Roberson
Students will use rattan reed to learn basic basketry skills and create individual baskets. Square baskets, round baskets, egg baskets and miniature baskets will all be explored. Basket reed has to be worked wet so expect to get a little wet as well!

Ages 8-15, Introduction to Stained Glass Monday-Friday, July 16-20 (two classes available) 9:00a.m.-12:00 noon or 1:00-4:00 p.m., $115.00
Instructor: L' Jon Papillion
In this class participants will cut, grind and lead glass to make a 8" X 12" stained glass panel. Materials and tools will be supplied. Come learn the ancient art and see the world "through colored glass". L'Jon is a seasoned professional in glass and has been a Knox County teacher for a number of years. For safety, no sandals allowed.

Ages 11-15, Design & Paint a Masterpiece Monday-Friday, July 23-27, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, $80.00
Instructor: Betty Fortenberry
In this class participants will create a beautiful painting using acrylics. Topics such as shading, watercolor effects, composition and color theory will be discussed and implemented. A beautiful quality painting should be completed at the end of the week.


8-12, Dolls, Dolls and more Dolls
Monday-Friday, July 23-27, 1:00-4:00 p.m. $80.00
Instructor: Nancy Roberson
Learn to make your own simple dolls and playthings. Students will learn to make yarn dolls, corn shuck dolls, hankie dolls, and a small 18" X 18" doll quilt. Basic hand sewing skills will be taught plus some simple embroidery stitches.

Explore with various materials such as clay, paint, and pastels. Learn basic drawing and sculpture techniques while making an assortment of fun art projects. The clay pieces will be fired to cone 06 and finished with a variety of faux finish and painting techniques.

Beginning and intermediate students will explore ways to use clay slabs and/or extruded parts alone or in combination to make fun and functional pieces such as cups, vases, trays, boxes and baskets. Students who already know how to throw on the wheel will be encouraged to add thrown components to their slab and extruded pieces. Decorative techniques and glazing will be taught, and pieces will be fired to cone 6. Class includes up to 25 lbs of clay, use of tools, glazes, firing , and independent studio time. (Students may purchase an additional bag of clay from the instructor for $50.00 which also includes glazes and firing fees.

American Museum of Science & Energy: Department of Energy Facilities Public Bus Tour

With guide commentary for U.S. citizens (10 years and up) with photo identification. This Public Bus Tour is offered Monday - Friday, once a day, except government holidays July 4 & 5. Bus Tour registration begins at 9 am, when AMSE opens. AMSE admission includes the DOE Facilities Public Bus Tour, when participants complete the Registration Sheet upon entering AMSE. Tour participants begin loading bus at 11:45 am, bus departs at 12 noon and returns to AMSE at 3 pm. Space is limited and some restrictions apply. Participants have four off-the-bus stops including Y-12 New Hope Visitor Center, Bethel Valley Church and Graphite Reactor, a national historic landmark, both at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the K-25 Overlook. Tour also includes a drive by of the Spallation Neutron Source.

The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade: Photographs by Tom Whitehurst

The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is pleased to announce Tom Whitehurst as Artist of the Month of July. Tom is a technological nature photographer and will be exhibiting a vast array of artistic photographs.

The artist does his own printing, matting, and framing and prints on canvas, watercolor, and fine art papers using pigmented ink all of which are Archival. His work tends to be novel and quite original. His artist statement indicates: “I just love being outside and taking photographs of “nature’s beauty”.

Visit this exhibition of photography at the Plateau Creative Arts Center , 451 Lakeview Drive (off Peavine). Hours are Monday through Friday 9 am - 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday 1 pm - 4 pm. Have a picture perfect summer!
