Tennessee Stage Company: Shakespeare Outloud

5350.jpg

Category: Literature, spoken word, writing and Theatre

We have decided to work on a new approach to our readings of Shakespeare’s plays at the library downtown and we have a new format that I think will be a lot of fun.

We are going to read quarterly rather than monthly, and we are going to look for people to direct each reading. So we’ll ask that they do a cutting and at least some casting ahead of time which we will then fill out with people who come and want to read on the day of. Reading quarterly rather than monthly will mean that directors will have more time to prepare their scripts and put some actors together. So, if you have an interest please contact me so we can set it up.

Our next reading is planned for December and we are looking to do “Twelfth Night” which we know was performed as a Christmas piece by Shakespeare’s company and for which we have a good cut on hand.

If you are interested in Directing please get in touch.

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events, Fine Crafts and Free event

The Last Friday Art Walk is a recurring event to celebrate the arts on the last Friday of every month in Downtown Maryville. What's unique about it is that it's not just galleries participating. It's also businesses like bars, retail stores, restaurants, theaters, and coffee shops. Each participating business hosts a "featured artist," this includes all disciplines of art; visual arts, performance artists, actors, writers, dancers, musicians, etc. New artists and new art are required each month, which gives the community a new experience each time they come.

Presented by the Maryville Arts Coalition. Information: http://www.maryvilleartwalk.com or http://www.facebook.com/pages/Maryville-Last-Friday-ArtWalk/101193813269860

Jubilee Community Arts: The Ebony Hillbillies

Jubilee Community Arts presents The Ebony Hillbillies Old-time String Band,
Friday, September 28 at 8 pm at the Laurel Theater.

As one of the few performing black string bands in the country and the only one currently based in New York City, the Ebony Hillbillies keep an important legacy alive with a rootsy, homegrown style that was a key element in the genesis of many modern music forms including jazz, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock and roll and country. The band is led by Henrique Prince on fiddle and vocals and Norris Bennett on banjo, dulcimer, guitar, and vocals; and includes William"Salty Bill" Salter on acoustic bass and vocals; Newman Taylor Baker on washboard, percussion and vocals; and Gloria Thomas Gassaway on bones and vocals. They are in Tennessee for the Louie Bluie Festival at Cove Lake State Park in Campbell County on September 29. The festival celebrates the life and traditions of East Tennessee native Howard Armstrong who led an African-American string band in the Knoxville area during the late 1920s and 1930s, performing at the Laurel in 2000. Once widespread, Black string bands had almost disappeared by then, with fiddler Joe Thompson the last of the old generation to play at the Laurel in 2005.

The Laurel Theater is located on the corner of 16th and Laurel Avenue in the historic Fort Sanders neighborhood of Knoxville near the UT campus.

Pellissippi State: Exhibition of African-American artist Harold Winslow

5260.jpg
  • September 19, 2012 — October 3, 2012

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and History, heritage

He lived on the roof of a five-story apartment building in Mexico, and his room was so small that it contained little more than a bed, some canvases and his painting tools. It was from there, though, that African-American artist Harold Winslow created more than 1,300 pieces, securing a place in art history as a prolific chronicler of Mexican culture.

A collection of 50 of Winslow’s works will be shown at a special traveling art exhibit hosted by Pellissippi State Community College and the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. The works have been on tour since August 2011 at selected Kentucky and Tennessee colleges and universities.

Slated for display at Pellissippi State Sept. 19-Oct. 3, “Una Visión de la Mexicanidad”—“Mexicanidad” refers to the Mexican national identity and culture—offers a record of one artist’s experience in two cultures. Winslow, who was born in 1918 in Dayton, Ohio, moved to Mexico in 1940 in the hopes of escaping racism. He remained there until his death in 2001, at the age of 83.

At the Bagwell Center Gallery. Hours: M-F 9-4. Hardin Valley Campus (10915 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville, TN 37933). Contact: 865-694-6400, www.pstcc.edu
