Clarence Brown Theatre: The Little Prince

4676.jpg

Category: Theatre

A crash-landed aviator meets a curious little Prince from a house-sized asteroid while stranded in the desert. As the open-hearted little Prince recounts tales of characters he has met in his intergalactic travels, the aviator is reminded of the simple truths people seem to forget as they grow older. A parable celebrating the wisdom of the innocent, the play is based on one of the most beloved children’s stories of all time.

Cultural Attractions Committee: Ragamala

  • October 4, 2012
  • 7:30 PM

Category: Dance, movement

The Indian American Association and the Cultural Attractions Committee, a committee of the Central Program Council, a student-led organization advised by the Office of Student Activities, Division of Student Life, encourages your participation and attendance at Ragamala Dance. Acclaimed as one of the Diaspora’s leading Bharatanatyam ensembles, Ragamala Dance seamlessly carries this South Indian classical dance form into the 21st century.

Artistic Directors Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy see Bharatanatyam as a multi-dimensional art form—a dynamic, poetic language with which to convey their contemporary ideas. While deeply respectful of the classical tradition, their vision and approach have inspired numerous collaborative partnerships with international composers, choreographers, poets, playwrights, and artists.

Ragamala features soloist Aparna Ramaswamy, described as “both iconic and explosive…infusing the formal rigor of Bharatanatyam with fluid spontaneity and rock star allure” (Dance Magazine,“25 to watch in 2010”) and “an enchantingly beautiful dancer” (The New York Times).

The company has toured throughout the United States and abroad to such venues as the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), CalTech’s Beckman Theater (Los Angeles, CA), Bali Arts Festival (Bali, Indonesia), Festival of Spirituality and Peace (Edinburgh,U.K.), and Soorya Music and Dance Festival(Kerala, India).

This event is $5 for UT students, $20 for faculty and staff, and $25 for the general public. Tickets may be purchased online at www.KnoxvilleTickets.com. Knoxville Writers' Guild: Self-publishing Panel Discussion

5355.jpg

Category: Lecture, panel

Contemporary writers have many publishing options, including self-publishing, which no longer carries the stigma it did just a decade ago. To help writers determine if self-publishing is a good fit, the Knoxville Writers’ Guild will hold a panel discussion on self-publishing at its next meeting.

“Since the publishing industry has changed so radically in the past five years, one of the first questions many writers ask themselves is whether they should self publish,” Terry Shaw, discussion moderator and KWG president, said. “Now people will get a chance to talk with four people who have been through the process. Hopefully, they'll leave the meeting in a better position to answer that question for themselves.”

The panel will be comprised of four successful, but unique, self-published writers: James B. Johnston, Joe Rector, Lisa Soland and Daryl Yearwood.

The event, which will be open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Street in Fort Sanders. A $2 donation is requested at the door. The building is handicapped accessible. Additional parking is available at Redeemer Church of Knoxville, 1642 Highland Ave.
