Pellissippi State: ‘Genius Loci’ Exhibit, Featuring Local Artist Katie Ries

5260.jpg
  • October 8, 2012 — November 2, 2012

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Pellissippi State Community College hosts “Genius Loci,” a multimedia exhibit and series of arts events by local artist Katie Ries, at the Hardin Valley Campus Oct. 8-Nov. 2. Ries’ interdisciplinary work incorporates drawing, costuming and social events designed to raise questions about how people access and engage with the land around them.

Previous area exhibits by Ries include a collaboratively stocked vending machine selling helpful kits instead of junk food; a series of costumes for gallery guests to wear; seedlings to be taken home, planted, and raised by art patrons; and small chores to be completed in exchange for objects in an art gallery. Ries’ 2008 costume show garnered a Metro Pulse comparison to Japanese artist Atsuko Tanaka’s 1956 “Electric Dress,” a garment crafted from light bulbs and electrical cords.

Area residents may recognize Ries’ name, even if they’ve never attended one of her exhibits. The artist was a co-founder of The Birdhouse, a collective arts space in Knoxville’s Fourth and Gill neighborhood. Since 2006, The Birdhouse has fostered and promoted emerging artists and musicians by renting studio spaces and by hosting exhibits, concerts, and special events. Ries is also well-known for the Urban Land Scouts, a group she began in 2010 in order to teach and promote land stewardship.

Ries says the show’s title, “Genius Loci,” refers to the ancient Roman belief in a resident spirit—a genius loci—who looked after and dwelt in a specific location. It also refers to her public and private engagements with that genius loci and ideas of environmental sustainability.

Four special events are planned for Ries’ “Genius Loci” exhibit:

· Opening reception—Oct. 8, 3-5 p.m.
· Shoemaking talk and demonstration with guest Daniel Scott, cordwainer (maker of fine leather shoes)—Oct. 9, 3-5 p.m.
· Introduction to urban land scouting, which includes a short outdoor walk and a pamphlet-style bookbinding activity—Oct. 22, 3-5 p.m. Limited to 15 participants, with registration required. Bring a drawing implement, and dress for the weather. Children are welcome, but they may require assistance in binding books. Please contact Jennifer Brickey at (865) 694-6634 or jmbrickey@pstcc.edu to register.

· Artist talk by Katie Ries—Oct. 29, 3-5 p.m.

“Genius Loci” is one of the events that make up Pellissippi State’s new arts series, “The Arts at Pellissippi State.” The series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts.

Regular exhibit hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The showing and associated special events take place in the gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art on the Hardin Valley Campus. The exhibit and events are free and open to the public.

For additional information about the exhibit or “The Arts at Pellissippi State,” call (865) 694-6400 or visit www.pstcc.edu/arts. To request accommodations for a disability, contact the executive director of Human Resources at (865) 694-6607 or humanresources@pstcc.edu.

Arts & Culture Alliance: Exhibition by Dena Honea

5299.gif

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of finger-printed portraits by Knoxville artist and UT graduate Dena Honea, opening Friday, October 5, at 5:00 PM on the north side of the Balcony at the Emporium Center in Knoxville. Honea will display eight recent portraits including infants and celebrities, and she welcomes requests for commissions.

Born in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Dena Honea has always had varied interests; everything from drawing and dancing to dirt bikes catches her attention. During her senior year in high school, she first thought of a way to tie her eclectic interests together: design. She attended the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay to pursue a degree in environmental design and later transferred to the University of Tennessee, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. During the past few years, Honea has focused the majority of her time on finger-printed portraits. Her unique portraits are made by prints alone, using her fingers as the paintbrush. No pencils, erasers, or paintbrushes are ever picked up. “This form of art is very personal, considering I am using the one thing that identifies me alone,” says Honea. “I am always in direct contact with the paper, which can be very sentimental.” For more information on Honea’s finger-printed portraits, or to request information on a commission, please visit www.finger-printed.com.

“Finger-printed” will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, October 6, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. For more information, please contact the Arts & Culture Alliance at (865) 523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance.com.

Arts & Culture Alliance: "Cultivated Form" by Kath Girdler Engler and Suzanne Jack

5299.gif

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of pastels, oils, and sculptures by regional artists Kath Girdler Engler and Suzanne Jack entitled “Cultivated Form”. Kath Girdler Engler gathers and repurposes items in order to create human form through her sculptures and wall hangings, and Suzanne Jack paints with energetic brush marks and strong areas of color to reflect the human spirit. Both artists’ works hinge around time, cultivated perceptions, and adaptation. The exhibition will be displayed at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from October 5-26, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on October 5 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Kath Girdler Engler is a well known sculptor in the Southeastern United States. As the child of a veteran antique dealer and restorer, she was raised to value the old, broken and discarded items that now are often re-purposed in her sculpture. She uses a paper pulp mixture to encrust figurative forms with natural items such as stones, barnacles, bones and vine as well as man made items that have been altered by sun, wind and water. “I collect the ephemera and fragments of our (my) recent past to enrich and texture my sculptures,” says Engler. Her work is in numerous public and private collections and has been exhibited in Italy, France, Japan and New Zealand. Engler is the Creator and Director of “Run With Art” camps for children and is Artist-in-Residence at the Children's Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. Engler is currently represented at the Mason Murer Gallery in Atlanta. For more information on Kath Girdler Engler, please visit www.kagesculpture.com.

Suzanne Jack works in pastel, oil, and acrylic and currently shows her art at The Art Market Gallery in Knoxville. “Planting the seeds of the future, going out on a limb, and putting down roots are daily reminders of our connection to nature,” says Suzanne Jack. “I am inspired and rejuvenated by nature. My artwork uses luminous light, a vivid color palette, and dynamic energy.” Published in The Pastel Journal, "State of Mind: Artistry of Tennessee" calendar, Knoxville Cityview and Homes & Living magazines, Jack has won regional and national awards. Her artwork has been purchased by private collectors and corporations such as BlueCross BlueShield, Tennessee Valley Authority, Gaylord Opryland, Home Federal Bank, and Corporate Interiors. She has a B.S. in Art Education from Ohio State University and an M.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee. Jack’s community affiliations include Leadership Knoxville 2013 and the Dogwood Arts Festival. For more information on Suzanne Jack, visit www.suzannejack.com.

“Cultivated Form” will be displayed at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, from October 5-26, 2012. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on October 5 from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, October 6, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Arts & Culture Alliance: Exhibition of Pottery by Lahla Deakins

5299.gif

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of hand-built lace pottery by Lahla Deakins of Burning Fork Studio, opening Friday, October 5, at 5:00 PM in the display case of the Emporium Center in Knoxville. Deakins combines intricate lace patterns with simple forms to make variety of functional ware, from tumblers and serving dishes to picture frames and jewelry. Lahla Deakins, a native of Johnson City, began taking pottery classes at the University of Tennessee as a journalism student, and instantly fell in love. After working as a copy editor and later receiving her Masters of Liberal Studies at East Tennessee State University, she decided to turn her artistic passion into a business, creating Burning Fork Studio in late 2010. The studio is located at West Jackson Workshops, 514 W. Jackson Ave., Suite 103, where Deakins creates her pottery and offers classes, workshops, and pottery parties for students age 4-adult.

“I’m inspired by vintage china patterns as well as sleek, modern forms, and I’ve always been drawn to rich textures,” says Deakins. “I love experimenting with pressing different types and patterns of lace into the clay—each one gives a piece an entirely unique personality.” Deakins uses lace she has collected from thrift shops, a local bridal shop’s scrap bin, and her own wedding dress, which inspired her to offer bridal lace special orders. Customers can bring her lace from their own wedding dress (or other keepsake lace) to have a custom vase, picture frame, or other piece designed. For more information about lessons and special orders, visit www.burningforkstudio.com.

Deakins’ pottery will be displayed at the Emporium Center, 100 S.
