The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of finger-printed portraits by Knoxville artist and UT graduate Dena Honea, opening Friday, October 5, at 5:00 PM on the north side of the Balcony at the Emporium Center in Knoxville. Honea will display eight recent portraits including infants and celebrities, and she welcomes requests for commissions.

Born in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Dena Honea has always had varied interests; everything from drawing and dancing to dirt bikes catches her attention. During her senior year in high school, she first thought of a way to tie her eclectic interests together: design. She attended the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay to pursue a degree in environmental design and later transferred to the University of Tennessee, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. During the past few years, Honea has focused the majority of her time on finger-printed portraits. Her unique portraits are made by prints alone, using her fingers as the paintbrush. No pencils, erasers, or paintbrushes are ever picked up. “This form of art is very personal, considering I am using the one thing that identifies me alone,” says Honea. “I am always in direct contact with the paper, which can be very sentimental.” For more information on Honea’s finger-printed portraits, or to request information on a commission, please visit www.finger-printed.com.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of pastels, oils, and sculptures by regional artists Kath Girdler Engler and Suzanne Jack entitled “Cultivated Form”. Kath Girdler Engler gathers and repurposes items in order to create human form through her sculptures and wall hangings, and Suzanne Jack paints with energetic brush marks and strong areas of color to reflect the human spirit. Both artists’ works hinge around time, cultivated perceptions, and adaptation. The exhibition will be displayed at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from October 5-26, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on October 5 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Kath Girdler Engler is a well known sculptor in the Southeastern United States. As the child of a veteran antique dealer and restorer, she was raised to value the old, broken and discarded items that now are often re-purposed in her sculpture. She uses a paper pulp mixture to encrust figurative forms with natural items such as stones, barnacles, bones and vine as well as man made items that have been altered by sun, wind and water. “I collect the ephemera and fragments of our (my) recent past to enrich and texture my sculptures,” says Engler. Her work is in numerous public and private collections and has been exhibited in Italy, France, Japan and New Zealand. Engler is the Creator and Director of “Run With Art” camps for children and is Artist-in-Residence at the Children's Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. Suzanne Jack works in pastel, oil, and acrylic and currently shows her art at The Art Market Gallery in Knoxville. “Planting the seeds of the future, going out on a limb, and putting down roots are daily reminders of our connection to nature,” says Suzanne Jack. “I am inspired and rejuvenated by nature. My artwork uses luminous light, a vivid color palette, and dynamic energy.” Published in The Pastel Journal, "State of Mind: Artistry of Tennessee" calendar, Knoxville Cityview and Homes & Living magazines, Jack has won regional and national awards. Her artwork has been purchased by private collectors and corporations such as BlueCross BlueShield, Tennessee Valley Authority, Gaylord Opryland, Home Federal Bank, and Corporate Interiors. She has a B.S. in Art Education from Ohio State University and an M.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of hand-built lace pottery by Lahla Deakins of Burning Fork Studio, opening Friday, October 5, at 5:00 PM in the display case of the Emporium Center in Knoxville. Deakins combines intricate lace patterns with simple forms to make variety of functional ware, from tumblers and serving dishes to picture frames and jewelry. Lahla Deakins, a native of Johnson City, began taking pottery classes at the University of Tennessee as a journalism student, and instantly fell in love. After working as a copy editor and later receiving her Masters of Liberal Studies at East Tennessee State University, she decided to turn her artistic passion into a business, creating Burning Fork Studio in late 2010. The studio is located at West Jackson Workshops, 514 W. Jackson Ave., Suite 103, where Deakins creates her pottery and offers classes, workshops, and pottery parties for students age 4-adult.

“I’m inspired by vintage china patterns as well as sleek, modern forms, and I’ve always been drawn to rich textures,” says Deakins. “I love experimenting with pressing different types and patterns of lace into the clay—each one gives a piece an entirely unique personality.” Deakins uses lace she has collected from thrift shops, a local bridal shop’s scrap bin, and her own wedding dress, which inspired her to offer bridal lace special orders. Customers can bring her lace from their own wedding dress (or other keepsake lace) to have a custom vase, picture frame, or other piece designed. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of colorful oils and drawings by Monroe County artist Denny Morelock entitled “Dreamscapes, An Altered Reality”, on display in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from October 5-26, 2012.

Born in upper east Tennessee in the small historic town of Rogersville, Denny Morelock recognized his love for drawing at a young age when he began copying schematic drawings he found in books. In high school, he studied art under the direction of Donald Hilton, an accomplished artist and teacher. In Hilton’s classes, Morelock was able to explore multiple media and showed talent in 2- and 3-D objects of art; he also learned to work with charcoal, pastels, graphite, watercolor and clay sculpting. Morelock studied oil painting at the University of Tennessee with Walter Stevens and Carl Sublett and studied printmaking with Byron McKeeby. Walter Stevens became his mentor and inspired Morelock’s work, praised his insights, and challenged his creativity.

A crash-landed aviator meets a curious little Prince from a house-sized asteroid while stranded in the desert. As the open-hearted little Prince recounts tales of characters he has met in his intergalactic travels, the aviator is reminded of the simple truths people seem to forget as they grow older. A parable celebrating the wisdom of the innocent, the play is based on one of the most beloved children’s stories of all time.

Students will create models of different types of rocks. Using various tools to observe the characteristics of the three major rock types, students will understand the process through which rocks are formed. Enrichment classes for talented and gifted students and designed for home-schooled children ages 7-14. Offering a hands-on learning experience in the area of science, this program consists of three courses that are four weeks in length. Instructor L’jon Papillon has 33 years of teaching experience with degrees in Gifted Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Early Childhood. Class fee is $60, and one student per paying adult will be able to take the class for $0.01.

October 2-28, Art Market Gallery of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by George Rothery and Kathy Lovelace, both of Knoxville.

Painter George Rothery will be exhibiting a collection of his recent works. A marine artist who concentrates in oils and acrylics, Rothery creates paintings inspired by the South Carolina coast and a nearly lifelong love of the water, sailing and racing. His work can be found in many public and private collections and has been exhibited nationally.

Artist Kathy Lovelace will exhibit a collection of small furniture and home accessory pieces which she has painted to create functional works of art. The Brook, Rainbow and Brown trout found in the streams of the Great Smoky Mountains are the subject matter for her works. Lovelace covers each painting with 10 layers of clear protective acrylic to make them completely functional and durable.

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for October 5th from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.
