Just as a colorful outdoor environment is the hallmark of the fall season, the colorful Fall Awards Show is a seasonal hallmark at the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC). At the Fall Awards Show, both residents and visitors will enjoy viewing some of the finest artwork that the members of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade have to offer.

To celebrate the Fall Awards Show, the public is invited to the opening reception held at the PCAC on Friday, October 12, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

The Fall Awards Show may be viewed until its closing on Thursday, November 1.

Celebrate the most spooktacular time of the year with your little monster at Knoxville’s largest Halloween event! BOO! at the Zoo presented by U.S. Cellular® kicks off 12 nights of safe and not-too-scary Halloween fun Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13 and continuing Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 18-21 and Thursday through Tuesday, Oct. 25- 30, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. each evening.
BOO! at the Zoo, a Halloween tradition for 26 years, is a family event featuring
devilishly good music and games at the Monster Mash tent in The Clayton Family
Kids Cove, friendly costumed characters throughout the zoo, and the only “haunted”
carousel in East Tennessee, the Scary-Go-Round. (How can you tell it’s
haunted? It goes backwards, of course.)
It wouldn’t be Halloween without the trick-or-treating! One of the highlights of
BOO! at the Zoo is the BOO! Trail, where little trick-or-treaters can fill their bag
with goodies as they make their way through the zoo. Each night of BOO! at the

Boo! at the Zoo tickets are $6 per person. Children under two are admitted free.

A musical revue!

Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10 plus fees for Thursday & Sunday performances and $15 plus fees for Friday & Saturday performances. October 5-27 - Philippa Roberts Jewelry Show
Using sterling silver and beautifully cut gemstones, California designer Philippa Roberts creates contemporary necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings that can be worn formally or informally, with an appeal to all ages.

October 5-13 - Fall Fibers from Baabaazuzu
Baabaazuzu creates environmentally-friendly clothing and accessories for men and women. Every piece is repurposed and handmade from felted wool. Items include mittens, fingerless gloves, scarves, hats, purses, bags, and fashion accessories.

October 12-27 - Jennythreads by Jen Swearington
Each piece of fabric in every Jennythreads item is hand dyed and/or hand printed by the artist with imagery from her sketchbook pages and original hand-cut stencils. Jennythreads handmade silk and bamboo apparel and accessories have been featured in the New York Times, Belle Armoire, Niche, on HGTV, and have won many awards at fine art and craft events.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its Fall Porch Sale starting Thursday, Oct. 11, and running for about two weeks. The Porch Sale, held each Spring and Fall, features outdated stock, seconds, student crafts and unjuried work by members of the Craft Center. It’s an excellent place to get great deals on handmade crafts. This year we’ll also have handmade artisan bread for sale while it lasts.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for 40 years. The center is located at 2716 Andersonville Highway 61 in Norris, Tenn., one mile east of I-75 north at Exit 122. Currently the center has about 70 crafters who sell in the shop.

The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art presents the fourteenth annual Artscapes auction in two parts: a Cocktail Party and Silent Auction, Thursday, October 11, 6-9 p.m., and a Gala and Live Auction, Friday, October 19, 6:30 p.m.

Auction items encompass a variety of regionally and nationally exhibited works by artists well known to the Knoxville community from past museum exhibitions along with a few surprises in paintings, drawings, prints, glass, jewelry and fine crafts. Additionally, a curator-led tour of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in Bentonville, Arkansas is up for the bidding. An exhibit of the auction items opens October 4 at the KMA. Until then, a selection of pieces may be seen at the Emporium on Gay Street. Art may also be viewed at the KMA website, www.knoxart.org or by e-mail request to kma.artscapes@gmail.com.

Highlights of the works to be auctioned include an oil painting by contemporary colorist Joel Barr and a signature oil on canvas by American Impressionist and outdoorsman John Adams Spelman (1880-1941), who traveled to East Tennessee in the 1920s and 1930s to paint our beautiful Smoky Mountains and surrounding lakes.

Wildlife Program: Behind the Scenes with the Ijams Veterinarian
October 10th, 13th, 24th and 27th at 11am
(ages 5 and up) Get up close and personal with some of Ijams' furred and feathered animal ambassadors! You won't want to miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of our animal care program. You'll get to see how we fee and care for the animals, and you may even have the chance to get nose-to-beak or toe-to-tail with some of our wildlife friends. Due to liability concerns, participants cannot be under 5 years of age. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Pellissippi State Community College hosts “Genius Loci,” a multimedia exhibit and series of arts events by local artist Katie Ries, at the Hardin Valley Campus Oct. 8-Nov. 2. Ries’ interdisciplinary work incorporates drawing, costuming and social events designed to raise questions about how people access and engage with the land around them.

Previous area exhibits by Ries include a collaboratively stocked vending machine selling helpful kits instead of junk food; a series of costumes for gallery guests to wear; seedlings to be taken home, planted, and raised by art patrons; and small chores to be completed in exchange for objects in an art gallery. Ries’ 2008 costume show garnered a Metro Pulse comparison to Japanese artist Atsuko Tanaka’s 1956 “Electric Dress,” a garment crafted from light bulbs and electrical cords.

Area residents may recognize Ries’ name, even if they’ve never attended one of her exhibits. The artist was a co-founder of The Birdhouse, a collective arts space in Knoxville’s Fourth and Gill neighborhood. Since 2006, The Birdhouse has fostered and promoted emerging artists and musicians by renting studio spaces and by hosting exhibits, concerts, and special events. Ries is also well-known for the Urban Land Scouts, a group she began in 2010 in order to teach and promote land stewardship.

Ries says the show’s title, “Genius Loci,” refers to the ancient Roman belief in a resident spirit—a genius loci—who looked after and dwelt in a specific location. It also refers to her public and private engagements with that genius loci and ideas of environmental sustainability.

Four special events are planned for Ries’ “Genius Loci” exhibit:

· Opening reception—Oct. 8, 3-5 p.m.
· Shoemaking talk and demonstration with guest Daniel Scott, cordwainer (maker of fine leather shoes)—Oct. 9, 3-5 p.m.
· Introduction to urban land scouting, which includes a short outdoor walk and a pamphlet-style bookbinding activity—Oct. 22, 3-5 p.m. Limited to 15 participants, with registration required. Bring a drawing implement, and dress for the weather. Children are welcome, but they may require assistance in binding books. “Genius Loci” is one of the events that make up Pellissippi State’s new arts series, “The Arts at Pellissippi State.” The series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts.

Regular exhibit hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The showing and associated special events take place in the gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art on the Hardin Valley Campus. The exhibit and events are free and open to the public.

The Barbara West Portrait Group will showcase an exhibition of their work in October at the Farragut Town Hall. The group's namesake, Barbara West, was an artist who shared her hospitality and home with fellow artists. Living in California for many years, she relocated to Knoxville in 2002. West was the founding member of the Pastel Society of San Diego.

The exhibit will highlight the work of Sherby Jones, the Town of Farragut Arts Council's featured artist for September and October. A University of Tennessee graduate, Jones has an extensive background in theatre and education and is the former owner of the Mountain Laurel Gallery located in Knoxville.
