Circle classes are continuing on with a great new lineup of teachers coming in ready to have a fun time in the dance studio.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present two new exhibitions of paintings by local artists Marcia Goldenstein and Jean Hess in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 2 – December 2, 2012. Goldenstein’s exhibition, entitled “Collection/Re-Collection”, is an installation project that transformed the results of her father’s decades-long extensive collection of stone tools and other artifacts into paint. Hess’s exhibition, entitled “Place”, is a series of collage paintings addressing various issues related to a sense of location in the universe, ranging from memory and reflection to orientation to fear and uncertainty.

The exhibition of recent works by Marcia Goldenstein and Jean Hess will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, from November 2 – December 2, 2012. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on November 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, November 3, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Please note, the Emporium will be closed November 22-23 for the holiday. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by Nick DeFord entitled “Alleged Posthumous Writings”, opening Friday, November 2, at 5:00 PM on the north side of the Balcony at the Emporium Center in Knoxville. Nick DeFord is an artist and educator from Knoxville. He received his MFA from Arizona State University and his BFA from the University of Tennessee. His work has been exhibited nationally, with recent exhibitions at the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts in New Jersey. His work has also appeared recently in Elephant Magazine and Strange Attractors: Investigations in Non-Humanoid Extraterrestrial Sexualities. He has previously taught at both Arizona State University and the University of Tennessee and recently became the Program Manager for Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of drawings and sculptures by local artists Sally Ham Govan and Bill Cook, Jr. entitled “Drawn and Carved”. Govan’s charcoal pencil, pastel, and digital works will be displayed with Cook’s marble sculptures at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 2-30, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on November 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Sally Ham Govan has an MFA in illustration from the University of Hartford and a BFA in drawing and graphic design from the University of Tennessee. She currently designs and edits websites and publications at Middle Tennessee State University.

As one of six children, Bill Cook, Jr. grew up in the foothills of East Tennessee. As a young child, he took up wood carving with a pocket knife and could often be found creating small carvings from the plentiful cedar wood on the family farm. He attended the University of Tennessee and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1995. It was there that he discovered sculpting in clay and in the late 1990s, he started to use marble as a sculptural medium.

UT Downtown Gallery will behosting during the month of Novemeber, the exhibition: BASED ON A TRUE STORY.
The artists in “Based on a True Story” use narrative in their work in a variety of ways.

Chris Miner`s videos include autobiographical fragments, ruminative monologues, family history, dramatic events, and sometimes allegorical or iconic elements.

Matthew Garrison`s videos also complicate the issue of the real and the fictional, combining, for example documentary footage from the Iraq war with sequences from D.W. Griffiths films.

Yeon Jin Kim makes scroll drawings hundreds of feet long and builds models and sets out of common household materials, which she then films to make narrative videos.

Please join us for a reception and meet these artists, Friday night November 2 from 5:00pm until 9:00pm. Admission is free and open to the public.

Gallery hours are Wed- Fri 11-6 and Sat 10-3.

November 1-25, Art Market Gallery of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Lisa Kurtz and Joe Parrott, both of Knoxville.

Lisa Kurtz, who holds a BA and MA in Ceramics from the University of Louisville, will be exhibiting a collection of her recent works in clay. Her pieces, made with white stoneware clay, are a fusion of traditional forms with contemporary touches and are completely functional. Lisa is a member of several regional craft guilds.

Joe Parrott, an award-winning cityscape and landscape painter, renders his subject matter masterfully in oils in a thick, impasto style. The lights, shadows and reflections that he observes in the landscape are what inspire him to paint. His works are in many public and private collections.

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for November 2nd from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.

Member owned and operated by over 60 regional artists, Art Market Gallery is located a 422 South Gay Street in Knoxville next to the Downtown Grill & Brewery. Janusz Kapusta, an acclaimed Polish artist who lives in New York City, will lecture on his work, which will be presented as an exhibition in the Ewing Gallery. The lecture and exhibition is jointly sponsored by the College of Architecture and Design, the School of Art, and the Marek Maria Pienkowski Foundation.

Rhapsody in K-Dron will be a two and three dimensional installation, featuring a model of the K-Dron. The K-Dron is the geometrical form defined by its complexity and subtly. Discovered by Janusz Kapusta in 1985 and patented in 1987, the name K-Dron originates from K, the 11th letter of the alphabet, and GK-EDRON, the Greek word for surface.
This exhibition is held in honor of Polish Independence Day on November 11th.
