Arthur Kipps, a middle-aged solicitor, hires a theatre and the services of a professional actor to help him re-enact – and thereby exorcise – a ghostly event that befell him many years previously with horrifyingly tragic results. From the cluttered stage, Kipps begins to read his story: painfully, self-consciously and hesitantly at first, but, coached by the actor and aided by theatrical artifice, he grows in confidence and ability as he assumes a variety of roles and the play moves from narration to enactment. The actor portrays the young Kipps, sent north by his London firm to settle the estate of an elderly recluse, the late Mrs. Drablow, in whose isolated marshland house Kipps encounters the Woman in Black. This spectre unleashes a macabre sequence of events which culminate in a truly chilling twist in the play’s final moments. Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of the original novel by Susan Hill enjoyed an extended run in London’s West End, and The Woman In Black was most recently seen on the big screen starring Daniel Radcliffe.

Eddie Fisker is the dubious mastermind of the “gizmo” – an all-in-one hand held device that revolutionizes communication. Sound familiar? Anthony Clarvoe’s CTRL+ALT+DELETE eavesdrops on the hot-wired world of high-pressure scheming and the manipulation that accompanies a breakthrough in technology. The production runs October 24 – November 10, 2013 in the Clarence Brown’s Lab Theatre. Very popular at the Box Office, several performances have already sold out. The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris is looking for new members to sell their handmade crafts in the Craft Center shop. Anyone interested in going through the jurying process should pick up a jurying packet at the center and then bring three samples of their work to the center between Monday, October 21 and Friday, November 1 at noon. The jurying will take place on Monday, November 4, and items must be picked up by Thursday, November 12. Each person going through the process must fill out a form and pay a nonrefundable $25 jurying fee. The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for over 40 years. Deathtrap by Ira Levin is one of the popular successes of recent Broadway history. The play offers a rare and skillful blending of two priceless theatrical ingredients—gasp-inducing thrills and spontaneous laughter. Playwright Ira Levin snares the audience with the devious machinations of a writer of thrillers, Sydney Bruhl, whose recent offerings have been flops, and who is prepared to go to any lengths to improve his fortunes. Directed by Margy Ragsdale, the cast includes, John Cherry as the devious Bruhl, Lisa Blair, Eileen Conway, Darin Starr and Chuck Denny. Come and join the spirits for a tour of Downtown Knoxville’s scariest landmarks. The tours which last approximately one and a half hours each, will visit the sites of some of Knoxville’s best kept secrets. Stories for this year include: the legend of Knoxville’s own Frankenstein, The Haunted Church Organ & Hanging Abner Baker. All tours began and end at James White’s Fort located at the intersection of Hill Avenue and Hall of Fame Drive. Ample free parking is available for tour participants at the Fort. Tours will depart at 7:00 p.m. each evening. Each tour will end with a marshmallow roast around the fires at the Fort.

A Provocative and Gripping Story
The WordPlayers will present the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play Doubt, A Parable by John Patrick Shanley. This brilliant and powerful drama features Carol Mayo Jenkins, veteran of Broadway, Off-Broadway, numerous regional theatres and star of TV’s Fame. Ms. Jenkins plays Sister Aloysius, a Catholic school principal, who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn (Rollin Prince) of improper relations with one of the male students. Lar’Juanette Williams plays Mrs. Muller and Rachel Norman enacts Sister James. This thought-provoking drama confronts issues of hierarchical power, uncertainties and doubt.
