One of Shakespeare’s earliest tragedies, and far and away his darkest, most bloody play , “Titus Andronicus, is like an Elizabethan horror movie. Interestingly, it was also Shakespeare’s most popular play during his lifetime. The story rests on a struggle for control of the Roman Empire but the play is awash in blood – beheadings, mutilations and horrible crimes against humanity. This play is not for the faint of heart. “These words are razors to my wounded heart.”

The enchanting classic of children’s literature is re-imagined in brilliant musical style! After Mary Lennox is orphaned, she becomes the ward of an uncle in England she has never met. As she adjusts to her new life at secluded Misselthwaite Manor, Mary discovers a secret garden. If she can uncover the mysterious circumstances behind the garden, she might be able to save her sickly young cousin and melt the heart of her emotionally distant uncle.

The Secret Garden, winner of three Tony Awards, is based on the enchanting novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, who was living in the Knoxville area when she wrote it. The story centers on Mary Lennox, a young girl orphaned in India and sent to Yorkshire, England, to live with her reclusive uncle and his invalid son. Mary is angry and obstinate but when she encounters a neglected garden and its secrets gradually come to light, both Mary and the garden begin to bloom. With music by Lucy Simon, and book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Marsha Norman, The Secret Garden is a treasure for the whole family. Children and adults alike will be impacted by its themes of redemption, forgiveness, love and learning.

Alive After Five, the live music series at the Knoxville Museum of Art, presents EG Kight, “The Georgia Songbird,” and her band on Friday, July 18, at 6:00 pm.

Georgia native EG Kight (pronounced Kite) has traveled the world, from Germany to Italy to Japan and Mexico, and points in between. Featuring powerfully inflected vocals, extraordinary guitar playing, and a top-notch band behind her, playing a combination of original music and covers, Kight’s shows joyfully range from soulful, heartfelt ballads to all-out rockin’ anthems. She was the recipient of the 2013 Georgia Music Legend Award, nominated for two 2012 Blues Blast awards, and has had six Blues Music Awards nominations, twice for Song of the Year. A versatile entertainer, with her own blend of “country-flavored southern-fried blues,” Kight has appeared on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion, and one song from her segment was re-broadcast on the Listener’s Choice Program.

Knox Heritage continues its series of educational lunches, Lost & Found, on Friday, July 18th at 11:30 a.m. Guest speakers Bradley Reeves and Louisa Trott will present a fascinating look at historic Knoxville, via vintage film and video collected by the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS).

The Lost & Found Lunch will be held at the new office for Knox Heritage, Historic Westwood – 3425 Kingston Pike. Parking is free and is available in the Laurel Church of Christ parking lot next door – 3457 Kingston Pike. A free lunch buffet will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 12:00 p.m. Space is very limited and advance reservations are required. Dig It! Fun with Fossils, is a McClung Museum Summer Camp that focuses on paleontology. It is open to rising fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. It lasts five days, three hours per day, for one week.
