Bijou Theatre: Ole Smoky Moonshine presents The SteelDrivers
Category: Music
Nashville, Tennessee is a nexus ' a point where tradition and innovation intersect, where commerce collides with art. It may be the only town around where salaried songwriters and full-time session musicians are as common as accountants and schoolteachers. Music is the product, and the factories line the street, from the swank Music Row mini-high-rises to the low-slung Sylvan Park bungalows. And only Nashville could give birth to a band like The SteelDrivers: a group of seasoned veterans 'each distinguished in his or her own right, each valued in the town's commercial community ' who are seizing an opportunity to follow their hearts to their souls' reward. In doing so, they are braiding their bluegrass roots with new threads of their own design, bringing together country, soul, and other contemporary influences to create an unapologetic hybrid that is old as the hills but fresh as the morning dew. This is new music with the old feeling. SteelDrivers fan Vince Gill describes the band's fusion as simply 'an incredible combination.'

Cresthill Cinema Club: A Medal for Benny, It's Your America
Category: Film
A Medal for Benny is an affecting satire, one that explores a small California town that is honoring one of its ward dead, an absent hero who is used here to illuminate the rest of the world. Dorothy Lamour and Arturo de Cordova star alongside J. Carrol – who delivers a truly heartrending performance as the father of the fallen soldier. In addition to Naish’s unforgettable portrayal, A Medal for Benny garnered Academy Award nominations for its scenarists, John Steinbeck and Jack Wagner, for their brilliant, decidedly unique story.
A Medal for Benny will be preceded by our short subject, the rarely-shown It’s Your America, which was produced in 1945 by the U.S. War Office and directed by the towering John Ford. Shown exclusively to soldiers departing the military immediately after World War II, It’s Your America centers on a US serviceman who, during his combat career, came to realize the greatness of his country. Arthur Kennedy is the solider and those who help bring him to his enlightenment are portrayed by Preston Foster, Walter Sande, Stephen Dunne and our very own J. Carrol Naish.
Our location: The spacious clubhouse of the Windover Apartments. The journey there will take you to Cheshire Drive (off Kingston Pike, near the Olive Garden); going down Cheshire, turn right at the Windover Apartments sign, then go to the third parking lot on your right, next to the pool. There, the building that houses the clubhouse and offices of the Windover will be just a few steps away!

Knoxville Museum of Art: This World Is Not My Home: Danny Lyon Photographs

Lower galleries
This exhibition of more than 50 photographs traces this influential street photographer's career from 1962 to the present. Lyon rode with a notorious Chicago biker gang, marched against segregation during the Civil Rights Movement, and spent hours inside the death-row "Walls Unit" of Texas' Huntsville Prison. His goal, he said, was "to destroy Life magazine" - to present powerful, real alternatives to the hollow pictures and stories permeating mass media in America. A special group of Lyon's photographs taken during his visit to Knoxville in 1967 will be featured in the KMA's presentation.
