Bottle Cap Creatures. Stretching & Painting Canvases
Kids will imagine and create creatures from bottle caps and various found objects. From aliens to caterpillars, we are excited to see what they come up with! We'll also be stretching canvases and painting. Both projects utilize recycled materials and we'll be discussing the benefits of doing so.

A healthy snack buffet will be provided. If your child is over 5 and well behaved, you can drop them off while you go enjoy downtown! OR hang in the Paulk+Co Urban Garden Wilderness Experiment while you enjoy a refreshing libation and great collaborative conversations.

Kids will be working with paint and glue, so dress them appropriately. You might get dirty too.

Ever wonder what it would be like to stay overnight at the highest elevation lodge in the Eastern United States? How about doing so with a guided hike up one of Mt. Le Conte’s most scenic trails? Join Discover Life in America for all this and more on our annual Biodiversity Hike to Mt. Le Conte, August 23 and 24, 2014.

Discover Life in America (DLIA) works with scientists and volunteers from around the world to coordinate the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) for Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). The ATBI is one of the world’s most ambitious efforts to document and understand every living species in GSMNP, and it is through events like our annual hike to Mt. Le Conte that we hope to educate anybody interested in the importance of biodiversity to both this great park and the greater humankind.

The trip begins with a guided hike up Alum Cave Bluff Trail with an experienced guide providing natural history, local human history, biodiversity lessons and much more along the way. We’ll be having a picnic lunch on the way up, an evening sunset program about the ATBI at Clifftops, and a chance to meet some new friends while learning a thing or two. You’ll be presented with handmade note cards from DLIA, and lodging with dinner and breakfast. All this for the price of $275 per person – and you will be supporting both DLIA and the Smokies ATBI program.

The Ewing Galleryis pleased to Think / Make/ Think. With works in printmaking, sculpture, design, collage, ceramics, painting, and drawing, digital media, photography, and installation, this exhibition showcases recent work from 19 faculty members from UT's School of Art. Opening Reception is Thursday, August 21 from 6-8pm in the Ewing Gallery.

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Jackie Beckner as the featured artist for August and September. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, her exhibit features handmade sewing creations.

A Knoxville native, Beckner acquired her love of sewing from watching and learning from her mother as a child. When she became a mother, she made clothes for her two daughters, including prom dresses and eventually even a wedding dress. Today, Beckner enjoys sewing children's clothes, purses and other handmade items which she sells to raise funds for missions trips to Haiti. She volunteers with the One Vision International Children's Home in Haiti to teach girls the simple skill of sewing so they will have a means to provide for a family when they age out of the orphanage. Beckner is employed by the Knox County Public Building Authority.

Each month, the work of an artist or group of artists is featured in specially designed cases on the second floor of the rotunda in the Farragut Town Hall. The Farragut Town Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive directly across from the Farragut Branch Post Office.

This year, events get under way with the inaugural art exhibit at the Blount County Campus: “Quantum Confusion,” featuring the mind-bending artwork of Denise Stewart-Sanabria. The show runs Aug. 18-Oct. 18. The art will be on display in the lobby of the campus, 2731 W. Lamar Alexander Pkwy., during normal business hours, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each weekday.

The exhibit will feature installations of large charcoal drawings on plywood that suggest the presence of portals, using existing walls and building spaces. Visitors and students will walk through the installation when they visit the Blount County Campus.

“Radiant Geometry,” an exhibit by Maryville College Professor of Art Dr. Carl Gombert, will be on display in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Blackberry Farm Gallery. Receptions will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Aug. 29 and Sept. 26, in conjunction with the Maryville Last Friday Art Walk.

Gombert’s exhibit will include ink drawings, which consist only of straight lines drawn with a T-square, and rubber stamp monotypes. Most of the pieces Gombert will display in his exhibit were created during a sabbatical last semester. Gombert joined the Maryville College faculty in 1993, and his areas of teaching include painting, drawing and art history. He has exhibited in more than 200 shows throughout the country.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present a new stage adaptation of the epic, medieval legend of King Arthur: Knights Of Camelot. The play will be performed August 15 through 31, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM; Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM; Sundays at 3 PM. The show is KCT’s 60th full-scale production and features 22 young actors in the cast.

Five actors are making their KCT debuts: Cian Bell, Reece Brown, Brody Copeland, Gemma Nash, and Jacob Sousley.

This exhibition of more than 50 photographs traces this influential street photographer's career from 1962 to the present. Lyon rode with a notorious Chicago biker gang, marched against segregation during the Civil Rights Movement, and spent hours inside the death-row "Walls Unit" of Texas' Huntsville Prison. His goal, he said, was "to destroy Life magazine" - to present powerful, real alternatives to the hollow pictures and stories permeating mass media in America. A special group of Lyon's photographs taken during his visit to Knoxville in 1967 will be featured in the KMA's presentation.

Barbara Rogers, who is Co-President of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade, is Artist of the Month of August at the Plateau Creative Arts Center. Barb is dedicated to the medium of colored pencil. Her compositions reveal her desire to capture the interactions between colors, light, shadows, textures, and reflections. Photography is, also, another interest for Barb, and she uses assortments of photographs to create the ultimate colored pencil piece. Visitors can view this exhibit at the PCAC, 451 Lakeview Drive (off Peavine), Fairfield Glade Monday through Saturday 9 am – 4 pm Closed Sunday. The show will run through August 30.
