Biodiversity Hike to Mount Le Conte
Category: Festivals, special events, Kids, family and Science, nature
Ever wonder what it would be like to stay overnight at the highest elevation lodge in the Eastern United States? How about doing so with a guided hike up one of Mt. Le Conte’s most scenic trails? Join Discover Life in America for all this and more on our annual Biodiversity Hike to Mt. Le Conte, August 23 and 24, 2014.
Discover Life in America (DLIA) works with scientists and volunteers from around the world to coordinate the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) for Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). The ATBI is one of the world’s most ambitious efforts to document and understand every living species in GSMNP, and it is through events like our annual hike to Mt. Le Conte that we hope to educate anybody interested in the importance of biodiversity to both this great park and the greater humankind.
The trip begins with a guided hike up Alum Cave Bluff Trail with an experienced guide providing natural history, local human history, biodiversity lessons and much more along the way. We’ll be having a picnic lunch on the way up, an evening sunset program about the ATBI at Clifftops, and a chance to meet some new friends while learning a thing or two. You’ll be presented with handmade note cards from DLIA, and lodging with dinner and breakfast. All this for the price of $275 per person – and you will be supporting both DLIA and the Smokies ATBI program.
Reserve your reservation now while spots are still open! For reservations or more information, e-mail Todd at todd@dlia.org or call (865) 430-4757. The lodge will house two guests to a bed, so bring or friend or share a bed with another program participant.

Knox Heritage: Summer Suppers: Holly's Corner Lounge presents Con Hunley: One Night Only
Category: Festivals, special events and Fundraisers
From its opening in the 1930s as the Corner Grill, “The Corner” has been a beer joint; the setting for a scene from Cormac McCarthy’s novel Suttree; the favorite venue of Knoxville singer and musician Con Hunley, who packed the place whenever he performed; a listening room; and, briefly, a bookstore before its recent re-opening as Holly’s Corner. Return with us to the ‘70s and welcome the legendary Con Hunley back to The Corner—for one night only. Guests will be served updated supper club fare along with signature cocktails, the Con Collins and the Central Street Sour. It’ll be a swank evening of revelry, nostalgia, and blue-eyed soul from the one and only Con Hunley—with some ad hoc (totally optional) karaoke at the end. 50 guests, $125.00 per person. Location: Old North Knoxville, 842 N. Central Ave.
Knox Heritage’s popular series of fundraising dinners, Summer Suppers, takes place annually in some of the region’s most spectacular historic places. The suppers are organized by host committees of volunteers who work together to plan every detail.

Farragut Arts Council: Jackie Beckner, August-September Featured Artist
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Jackie Beckner as the featured artist for August and September. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, her exhibit features handmade sewing creations.
A Knoxville native, Beckner acquired her love of sewing from watching and learning from her mother as a child. When she became a mother, she made clothes for her two daughters, including prom dresses and eventually even a wedding dress. Today, Beckner enjoys sewing children's clothes, purses and other handmade items which she sells to raise funds for missions trips to Haiti. She volunteers with the One Vision International Children's Home in Haiti to teach girls the simple skill of sewing so they will have a means to provide for a family when they age out of the orphanage. Beckner is employed by the Knox County Public Building Authority.
Each month, the work of an artist or group of artists is featured in specially designed cases on the second floor of the rotunda in the Farragut Town Hall. For more information about this exhibit or to access a Featured Artist of the Month application, please contact Lauren Cox at lauren.cox@townoffarragut.org or 966-7057 or visit www.townoffarragut.org/artsandculture.
The Farragut Town Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive directly across from the Farragut Branch Post Office.
