McClung Museum: Birds, Bugs and Blooms: Natural History Prints from the 1500s-1800s
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and Science, nature
Drawing on the collections of the McClung Museum, the University of Tennessee Library’s Special Collections, as well as private collections, this exhibit explores the fascinating intersection of art and science in the tradition of natural history illustration and features over fifty rare books, prints, and objects.
From 16th century imaginings of fantastical beasts, to the extremely accurate 19th illustrations of plants and animals, the works on view highlight how increasing access to travel, technology, and books, as well as the evolution of the field of science, changed how these artful illustrations were created and interpreted. The curators of the exhibit, Catherine Shteynberg and Christine Dano Johnson, are available for interviews or walkthroughs of the exhibit, and can be contacted directly at: cshteynb@utk.edu, 865-974-6921.

Cresthill Cinema Club: The Gracie Allen Murder Case, The Lucy Show, The Phil Silvers Show
Category: Film
Our feature will be starring the daffiest dame of all them all, Gracie Allen, in The Gracie Allen Murder Case. The Gracie Allen Murder Case will be preceded by two comedic gems from television’s golden age. Things will kick off with “Centennial” (1955), a first-season episode of The Phil Silvers Show, starring Phil Silvers, in his legendary role of Sgt. Bilko. In “Centennial,” Bilko becomes enraged when a special services officer arrives at his base, bans poker playing – and begins a program offering fine arts, dance and painting instruction. Nonstop hilarity ensues, with series regulars Paul Ford, Harvey Lembeck and Allan Melvin adding to the fun.
“Centennial” will be followed by another first-season entry of a classic TV show. In this case, it’s “Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower,” a 1963 episode of the long-running hit, The Lucy Show. The title tells all, as Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance partner for one of their most hilarious rides, full of witty barbs and matchless physical comedy.
Our location: The spacious clubhouse of the Windover Apartments. The journey there will take you to Cheshire Drive (off Kingston Pike, near the Olive Garden); going down Cheshire, turn right at the Windover Apartments sign, then go to the third parking lot on your right, next to the pool. There, the building that houses the clubhouse and offices of the Windover will be just a few steps away!
