Roane Writers Group: 1950s Themed Fundraiser

  • September 20, 2014
  • 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Category: Festivals, special events, Fundraisers and Music

The Roane Writers Group has announced a very different kind of fundraising gala this year: a poodle-skirted, saddle-shoed, '50s Sock Hop. The event will be held at the Rockwood Event Center, 120 Rockwood Street in Rockwood, to raise money for the scholarships and prizes the Writers Group awards each year to the winners of its annual Roane County Student Writing Contest.

Guests will be able to swing, stroll, and do the jailhouse rock with noted Elvis impersonator Greg Johnson. The Eclipse Band will also entertain, and a DJ will spin all the golden oldies. There will be prizes awarded to the best dressed and best dancers, hula hoopers and bubble gum blowers. Refreshments will include pizza, Moon Pies, RC cola and other '50s faves along with the very special wines of B.J. Gillum.

'50s classic cars and motorcycles will be on display in front of the building, and guests lucky enough to own such vehicles are invited to park them in the reserved area. Guests are also encouraged, but not required, to dress in their '50s finest. Roane Writers Group President B.J. Gillum said, "A sock hop is quite a departure from our past fundraisers, but we're very excited to stage it this year as a real '50s "fun" raiser. Every year more students enter our writing contest, and we'd love to raise enough money to expand our scholarship awards, so we have high hopes this event will help us do that. We're also very pleased to hold the event in Rockwood and hope it will motivate more student writers from Rockwood schools to enter our contest."

Reservations are required and available to adults (over 21) only for a donation of just $30. Roane County teachers are invited to enjoy a $5.00 discount as thanks for their support of the Student Writing Contest. Groups may reserve a table and tickets for eight for $250. The public is invited to call B.J. Gillum at 865-354-8658 or email him at bjgillum@comcast.net to request tickets.
