Don't miss out on the fun! Come celebrate with us at
The Great Smoky Mountains Salamander Ball hosted by Discover Life in America.
Great Smoky Mountains’ Salamander Ball will put the ‘fun’ in FUNdraising for wildlife in The Smokies!
If you’ve ever marveled at the depth, breadth, or beauty of wildlife in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park , you are invited to one of the region’s premiere fundraising events: the Salamander Ball. This colorful masquerade party will be held at the Knoxville Zoo on September 13 from 6-10 p.m. The event directly supports conservation and science efforts in the Park conducted by Discover Life in America. A family-friendly evening, party-goers are encouraged to dress as their favorite Smoky Mountain critter. So come join the staff and board of Discover Life in America in partnership with the Knoxville Zoo (and a few surprise guests!) to celebrate the wondrous diversity of life in the Park. This event is for adults and children of all ages!
DLIA is dedicated to documenting every species in GSMNP, from ferns to fungi, from birds and beetles, and from black bears to bald eagles. To date, DLIA researchers have identified and documented more than 900 species new to science, and more than 7,600 previously unknown to call the Smokies their homes! Proceeds from the event will go to support Discover Life in America’s work to continue this discovery in the Smokies and beyond.

Drawing on the collections of the McClung Museum, the University of Tennessee Library’s Special Collections, as well as private collections, this exhibit explores the fascinating intersection of art and science in the tradition of natural history illustration and features over fifty rare books, prints, and objects.
From 16th century imaginings of fantastical beasts, to the extremely accurate 19th illustrations of plants and animals, the works on view highlight how increasing access to travel, technology, and books, as well as the evolution of the field of science, changed how these artful illustrations were created and interpreted. The curators of the exhibit, Catherine Shteynberg and Christine Dano Johnson, are available for interviews or walkthroughs of the exhibit, and can be contacted directly at: cshteynb@utk.edu, 865-974-6921.

Encore Theatrical Company - August: Osage County
Category: Theatre
August: Osage County – Tracy Lett’s dark tragicomedy of an unexpected family reunion caused by the disappearance of the Weston family patriarch is the most awarded show of our century. Featuring both Encore Theatrical favorites and those making their Encore debut, the show is sure to stun audiences while touching both their hearts and their funny bones. Portraying the role of the vitriolic matriarch of the Weston family is Linda High – a veteran of the Washington D.C. professional stage. Joining her are three familiar faces – Kathy Jones-Terry, Susan Christophel and Paige Munroe-Mattocks as the daughters raised by their pill-popping mother and alcoholic father. Also caught in this web of dysfunction are Devon Ressler as Aunt Mattie Fae, Larry Burton as Uncle Charlie, Adrian Thomas as their disappointment of a son Little Charles, Rus Mattocks as Bill, Rick Drybread as Steve, Rebekah Frith as Jean and Taylor Ferrell as Johnna Monevata. Portraying the role of the missing Beverly Weston is Dan Gibson in his stage debut. Director Kate Adams is thrilled to be bringing this piece of American drama to the Encore stage. “Our cast is doing a brilliant job of measuring up to the standard of theater that this show sets. The level of acting talent on this stage blows me away, night after night.”
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m., with an additional Saturday matinee September 20th at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $18.00 for adults, $15.00 for Senior Citizens and $10.00 for Students. The show contains both adult language and mature subject matter and is not suitable for children.
August: Osage County will be presented by Encore at the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex Theater located at Walters State Community College. 180 Main Street, Morristown, TN 37814. Info: 423-318-8331, www.etcplays.org
