Roane Writers Group: 2015 Student Writers Scholarship Gala
Category: Fundraisers
The Roane Writers Group has announced its 2015 Student Writers Scholarship Gala, "Boogie Night," designed as a celebration of the music, culture, and fashion of the 1970s and '80s. The event will take place from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Saturday September 19, 2015 at the Rockwood Event Center, 120 W. Rockwood Street in Rockwood. All proceeds help fund the scholarships and prizes the Group awards each year to the winners of its annual Roane County Student Writing Contest.
Guests are invited to come dressed for the era and hustle, moonwalk, and cabbage patch along with the oldies spun by DJ Ron McCuistion. Note, however, the Writers Group's self-appointed fashion deputy Lyn Meany has ruled (with tongue in cheek) that "only a limited number of leisure suits will be allowed in the building,” so if you intend electric-slide in the door sporting baby blue polyester, plan to arrive early.
The entertainment for the evening will be Greg Johnson's popular Legends show, featuring Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton impersonators. Fine buffet dining, contests and prizes, a 50/50 drawing, a live auction -- it's going to be a fun-filled evening for a very good cause.
Roane Writers Group President B.J. Gillum said, "Following on from our '50s bash last year, we're really looking forward to another vintage-themed evening for this year's "fun" raiser. The Roane Writers Group is proud to now be a part of the Arts Council of Roane County. We hope that with its help and the money raised during this event, our annual Student Writing Contest can continue to thrive. The scholarship and cash prizes we offer have proven to be great motivation for kids to discover the joy of writing and the importance of learning to write well."
Reservations are required and available to adults (over 21 only) for a donation of just $25. Roane County teachers are invited to enjoy 15% discount as thanks for their support of the Student Writing Contest. Guests may pay in advance or at the door, but are asked to call Sharon Higa at 865-512-7936 or email her at blueunicorn1@bellsouth.net for reservations.
Saturday September 19, 5:00 to 9:00 PM., 2015, at the Rockwood Event Center, 120 W. Rockwood Street in Rockwood.

Category: Kids, family and Theatre
Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr., a musical stage version of the classic 1989 Walt Disney Studios film, specifically adapted for children and families. The play will be performed September 18 through October 4, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM; Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM; Sundays at 3 PM.
In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home - and her fins - behind and live in the world above. Many of the favorite songs of the Walt Disney film are brilliantly recreated on stage, such as the Oscar-winning “Under The Sea,” “Part Of Your World,” and “She’s In Love.” The script is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and the Disney film , written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. The script is written by Doug Wright, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman & Glenn Slater. The play is produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
KCT will also host a series of "Under The Sea" tea parties to coincide with Saturday 1 PM and Sunday 3 PM performances of Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr. Performances with the tea-party option include September 19, 20, 26, 27; October 3 and 4, as interest and availability dictates. The $25 ticket price includes admission to the performance, as well as food, drinks, crafts and games, all with a special "Under The Sea" theme.
