9th Annual Louie Bluie Music and Arts Festival

  • September 26, 2015
  • 10 AM - 7 PM

Category: Festivals, special events, Free event and Music

Bluegrass and blues come together at the ninth annual Louie Bluie Music & Arts Festival at Cove Lake State Park in Caryville, Tenn. The festival’s variety of musical styles convey East Tennessee’s rich musical tradition and honor the adventurous, pioneering spirit of festival namesake Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong (1909-2003), who spent his early youth in LaFollette and became a world-renowned musician and artist.

East Tennessee native Steve Gulley brings his new band New Pinnacle to perform songs from their new CD, Leaving Crazy Town. Gulley has been involved in the festival for several years as a headliner at the pre-festival Sounds Like Home concert. This year, he performs at Louie Bluie under the newly renamed Sounds Like Home tent.

Grammy-winning blues guitarist and songwriter Alvin “Youngblood” Hart performs with his band. In 1998, Hart shared a stage in his native Oakland, Calif., with Armstrong when the elder man was 89 years old. Both were nominated for WC Handy Awards (now known as the Blues Music Awards, presented by the Blues Foundation) in 2000.

Performers at the Ninth Annual Louie Bluie Music & Arts Festival are:

Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle
Alvin “Youngblood” Hart’s Muscle Theory
The Armstrong Legacy Trio featuring Howard’s son Ralphe and long-time collaborators Ray Kamalay and John Reynolds Pinnacle Mountain Boys Reunion featuring Don Gulley Sparky & Rhonda Rucker Emi Sunshine The New River Boys Will Boyd & Kelle Jolly Maggie Longmire Keith Brown & The Blue Print Y'uns Jugband Tennessee Schmaltz Dixieghost

The festival also includes its annual re-enactment of the Old-Time Fiddlers Convention with guest fiddlers acting out the historic competition held for many decades in LaFollette. Cumberland Trail director Bobby Fulcher leads this fun tribute. Additional performers and stage schedules will be released closer to the festival date and posted online at LouieBluie.org.

Louie Bluie Music & Arts Festival features a juried Craft Village, area food vendors, a Kids’ Zone, a judged art and quilt show including the handiwork of area students and non-professional artists.

Admission to Louie Bluie is free. Donations at the gate are encouraged to support Campbell Culture Coalition, the non-profit community arts organization that puts on the festival. For more information, visit LouieBluie.org.

Sundress Academy for the Arts: Strange Passengers: Writing the Urban Legend and Ghost Story

Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing

Strange passengers that vanish from cars, men with hooks for hands, and a quiet railroad crossing where a stalled car will be pushed from the tracks by unseen hands. Urban legends and ghost stories have long been the stories we tell to each other before we decide to write our own tales. But why abandon these early stories that still make us check the back seat before we get into the car by ourselves, or avoid saying a name three times into the mirror? More importantly, why abandon stories that are so rooted in place? In this workshop, we’ll return to these ghost stories and legends, talking about the versions of the stories we each remember and taking inspiration from these old bits of place and superstition to assemble new stories about place, identity, and the things that go bump in the night.

This workshop will take place at the Sundress Academy for the Arts in Knoxville. Snacks and beverages provided. Tickets available here for only $25!
