Sequoyah Birthplace Museum: Free Lecture with Dr. Duane King

9638.jpg

Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

The Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore is hosting a free lecture with interpretive naturalist, storyteller, and wild crafter Ila Hatter and Avi Askey, owner of the Overhill Gardens. The topic of the lecture will be “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Plants”.

Ila Hatter is an interpretive naturalist, artist, storyteller, and wild crafter with more than 30 years’ experience teaching the cultural heritage of native plants. Ila is publisher of "Roadside Rambles", a wild foods cookbook, and a video series: "Wild Edibles and Medicinals of Southern Appalachia and Mountain Kitchen". She hosted three Folkways programs for PBS/UNC-TV, and has appeared on CNN, Turner/South, RFDTV, and A&E. There are more plant species here than in the entire North American continent including Canada. The indigenous people knew which plants were "the Good Plants" for food, medicines, and household use. In many cases they shared that knowledge with the incoming settlers. Even today we can enjoy having those plants, trees, shrubs, in our home landscape. There are flavors that cannot be bought, home remedies at hand, and interesting folklore to share. Also joining Ila Hatter will be Avi Askey of the Overhill Gardens who will be lecturing on the removal of invasive plants. The Overhill Gardens is a native Tennessee plant nursery open to the public. They grow over 500 species of native plants, some of which may not be available anywhere else. They have a diverse mix of plants that also help keep pests and disease at a minimum.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, 576 Hwy 360, Vonore, TN 37885. Hours: M-Sa 9-5, Su 12-5. Information: 423-884-6246, www.sequoyahmuseum.org

Category: Classes, workshops and Dance, movement

"RAW MATERIAL" – Living Art workshop
with Claire Elizabeth Barratt
(co-founder of Circle Modern Dance / founding director of Cilla Vee Life Arts)

Saturday & Sunday, March 12 & 13 from 3:00–5:00 PM
Emporium Annex Studio, 100 S Gay St.
The Raw Material of the performing artist is the Self. This workshop is for anybody who has a body – to investigate the body as a medium for art: Dancers, Choreographers & Actors exploring a unique personal movement vocabulary; Visual Artists pursuing concepts in Performance Art; Yoga & Body Work practitioners expanding a creative practice – or any body who is just plain curious!

Claire has developed a "practical pedagogy" for performance art – a teaching method that allows each individual to research the Self as raw material with which to create.

The workshop sessions will employ three avenues of inquiry:
1. Body Tuning

– using the analogy of "tuning" an instrument or an engine in order to realize its capacities & prepare for action

2. Creative Response
– interactive play in response to other entities

3. Environmental Interaction
– engaging the raw materials of Self with the raw materials of environment

Come prepared with layers of warm, comfortable clothing.
The two workshop sessions are designed as a cohesive unit – however, it is possible to just attend one in the case of insurmountable schedule conflicts!

Saturday & Sunday, March 12 & 13 from 3:00–5:00 PM
Emporium Annex Studio, 100 S Gay St.

Town of Farragut Arts Council: Jewelry Made by Marianne Gansley

  • March 10, 2016 — March 31, 2016
  • 8:00AM-5:00PM

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents artist Marianne Gansley as the featured artist for March. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, the exhibit highlights jewelry made with a variety of vintage items such as buttons, clock parts, typewriter keys and other vintage pieces.

Gansley began making jewelry 11 years ago after inheriting her French grandmother's button collection. After playing around with these antique pieces, she decided to give them new life by creating wearable art. Her inspiration for these upcycled pieces came from the earth-friendly lifestyle that she has been accustomed to living. Gansley soon found that she could incorporate other vintage objects into different types of jewelry. Gansley's latest work can be viewed on her Facebook page at facebook.com/littlesunshinejewelry.

Each month, the work of an artist or group of artists is featured in specially designed cases on the second floor of the rotunda in the Farragut Town Hall. For more information about this exhibit or to access a Featured Artist of the Month application, please contact Lauren Cox at lcox@townoffarragut.org or 966-7057 or visit www.townoffarragut.org/artsandculture.

The Farragut Town Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive directly across from the Farragut Branch Post Office.

Bliss Home First Friday: Artwork by Lindsey Teague

  • March 4, 2016 — April 30, 2016
  • 6:00-9:00PM

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Bliss Home is pleased to present new artwork by Knoxville artist, Lindsey Teague, for April's First Friday! Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, April 1st from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary treats from Wild Love Bakehouse will be provided and Lindsey's art will be featured for the month of April.

Lindsey Teague graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a BFA in Graphic Design in 2009. She is a freelance graphic designer with over 7 years of experience in the design field. She has worked with clients on every level from billion dollar corporations to first time small business owners. She volunteers her photography skills, which have been awarded by AIGA, by teaching inner city children photography workshop classes. She gives back to her community and various non-profit organizations by donating art, design work, and photography. She uses her spare time to refine her fine art work which has been showcased in over 12 First Fridays in the Knoxville area and will be presented in the Dogwood Arts Festival this spring.

Lindsey's April exhibit is inspired by what is meaningful in her life such as the people, places, and the history of this scruffy little city by the river. Lindsey's art process begins with taking photographs then she vectors the images down and prints them on wood boards. Along with an interesting texture, the wood carries an organic tone which is representative of the surrounding natural landscape. Each board is stained with an acrylic based paint to add a little vibrancy and contrast.
