Clayton Center for the Arts: Our Planet
Category: Film, Music and Science, nature
The landmark Emmy Award®-winning Netflix series that took the world by storm is now a live concert event! OUR PLANET LIVE IN CONCERT combines breathtaking HD cinematography with all-new orchestrations by Oscar®-winning composer Steven Price performed by a live onstage orchestra. A journey of discovery across our planet featuring narration by legendary broadcaster David Attenborough, this mesmerizing concert is a spectacular celebration of the planet we call home — welcoming audiences to be fully immersed into the wonders of earth’s wildlife and their habitats. A donation will be made to World Wildlife Fund for each concert.
Academy Award®-winning composer Steven Price states, “I can’t wait for the audience to experience the music of OUR PLANET live. Using a combination of the most memorable sequences from the Netflix series exclusively designed for this show, the incredible musicians plan to take you on a journey that celebrates the wonders of our planet — the one home we all share — whilst showing the urgent need to treasure and protect it.”
“The level of detail in the use of slow motion, time-lapse, extreme close-up, and awe-inspiring aerial shots adds up to something extraordinary. There are so many rare delights, like hidden cameras that have captured reticent Arabian leopards, or the whimsical marches of leaf-cutter ants, as well as curious mating rituals that you may have seen documented elsewhere, but which now have such extraordinary clarity they almost look unreal.” — Collider

Knoxville Poet Laureate Rhea Carmon, also known as RheaSunshine, has been writing and performing spoken word poetry and slam for 20 years. Her poems are powerfully motivating with an emphasis on her own personal struggles and how others can overcome. She is the director of the annual 5th Woman On Stage (2014 - 2018), a producer for Carmon Sense Productions, coordinator for the 5th Woman Workshops, and Executive Producer for Beyond the Spark.
Knoxville’s first Youth Poet Laureate, Melody Dalili, is a Farragut High School senior who began writing poetry in the third grade. Her first poetry slam in August 2021 opened the world of performing poetry. She told WATE TV, “I love making connections with people and I love talking with people and I don’t think that there’s any better way to do it while also talking about my own experiences and being vulnerable and really putting myself out there.”

UT Arboretum Society: It's time to Migrate North: The Birds are on the Move
Category: Free event, Science, nature and Virtual
“IT’S TIME TO MIGRATE NORTH: THE BIRDS ARE ON THE MOVE” VIRTUAL PROGRAM APRIL 6, PRESENTED BY THE UT ARBORETUM SOCIETY.
Spring is here and our migratory birds are starting to fly home. Many birds migrate south for the winter to find food because they primarily eat insects or fruit. Over the next few weeks millions will be returning north, passing over our homes on their way to northern breeding grounds. They fly at night to avoid overheating and spend their days in our trees looking for food. Join the UT Arboretum Society via Zoom on Thursday, April 6 at 7 p.m. as Michelle Campanis, education coordinator at the University of Tennessee Arboretum, and naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales give us an overview of migratory birds in East Tennessee.
The program is free, but registration is required to receive your Zoom link and the recording. Closed captions are available. Register at www.utarboretumsociety.org Please contact Michelle at mcampani@utk.edu for any questions or registration issues.

Join UT's Native American Student Association and the McClung Museum for a special presentation of the film short ᎤᏕᏲᏅ (What They've Been Taught).
After the film, stay for a special pre-recorded interview with one of the short's filmmakers, Brit Hensel (Cherokee Nation), who is now working on the hit series Reservation Dogs. Hensel met with UT students to talk about film and the importance of representation. After that students will lead a talk back discussion.
The presentation will be preceded by light snacks and activities. Doors open at 5pm. The film will start at 6pm.
Filmed on the Qualla Boundary and Cherokee Nation, ᎤᏕᏲᏅ (What They’ve Been Taught) - pronounced "oo-day-yo-nuh" - explores expressions of reciprocity within Cherokee communities, brought to life through a story told by an elder and first language speaker. ᎤᏕᏲᏅ is a reflection on tradition, language, land, and a commitment to maintaining balance. This film was created in collaboration with independent artists from both Cherokee Nation and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
This event is being presented as a compliment to the exhibition Repatriation of Archaeology & the Native Peoples of Tennessee. It is possible thanks to generous sponsorship from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN: Violin Sonata No. 4 in A minor
ALEXANDRA BRYANT TAVANI: Selections from “The Open” for Violin and Piano
GEORGE FREDERIC HANDEL: Passacaglia for 2 Violins (arr. JOHAN HALVORSEN, second violin arr. JASCHA HEIFETZ)
LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN: String Quartet No. 12
Beethoven’s “Late Quartets” are legendary pieces that inspired countless composers and artists alike since their composition. They are also the most challenging string quartets ever written, performed almost exclusively by touring professional String Quartets who may “live” with them side by side over time. Yet here in Knoxville, we so rarely hear them performed: something I cannot accept! Together with my colleagues in the KSO, I am thrilled to perform the String Quartet No. 12, op. 127. A heavenly piece that has moments of fantasy, high romanticism, and even a touch of ballet, this piece was innovative from the day it was written and remains “forever modern,” to borrow from Igor Stravinsky’s famous commentary on the Late Quartets. Beethoven’s ground-breaking spirit always inspires me to program his music alongside an extraordinarily talented composer of today; and preceding the string quartet, Kevin Class and I will perform Alexandra T. Bryant’s “The Open” for Violin and Piano. Bryant’s composition vividly illustrates scenes from everyday life that we see in nature, with high fantasy taking a back seat to the most beautiful images of real life, from “the cool breeze across the lake” to “we stepped out onto our new lawn.” – William Shaub
