Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: The Doo Wop Project
Category: Music
Thermal Label Warehouse/Shaw Family Pops Series
Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 8 p.m.
Knoxville Civic Auditorium
The Doo Wop Project begins at the beginning, tracing the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. In their epic shows, DWP takes audiences on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like the Crests, Belmonts and Flamingos through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, and The Four Seasons all the way to DooWopified versions of modern musicians like Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz and Maroon 5. Featuring stars of Broadway’s smash hits Jersey Boys and Motown: The Musical, the Doo Wop Project brings unparalleled authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate—and in some cases entirely reimagine—some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history!

WDVX: Kidstuff Live with Miss Lynn
Category: Free event, Kids, family and Music
May 13 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
On the day 9-year old Lynn Hickernell was selected as captain of a gym class kickball team, she knew just what she would do: the first members chosen for her team would be the classmates who, like her, were usually picked last. As the teams assembled, she ignored the quizzical facial expressions and continued to select smaller, less-coordinated 4th graders, instead of the stronger, faster students who quickly made up the opposing team. She knew that her team might not be obvious victors, but if they worked together, they could show the other team what they could do–which turned out to be lose. Badly. By a score of approximately 25 to 0. And while it wasn’t much fun to lose that spring morning, many years later it made a good story.

Bijou Theatre: Dusty Slay

DUSTY SLAY, COMEDY SPECIAL TAPING at the Bijou Theatre.
SATURDAY, MAY 13 | TWO PERFORMANCES, 7:00PM and 9:30PM.
Dusty Slay has announced two comedy shows at Bijou Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee, on May 13, 2023. Slay will be hitting the stage at both 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The sets will be the recording of his first one-hour comedy special taping.
You can take the boy out of the trailer park, but you can’t take the trailer park out of the boy. Stand-up comedian Dusty Slay grew up poor on Lot 8 of a mobile home neighborhood in Opelika, Alabama, with a love for both classic country and rock and a career history peppered with jobs like waiting tables and selling pesticides. The trucker hat, long hair, mustache, flannel shirt and oversized glasses aren’t affectations to cultivate a stage persona as the B-side of a 1970s Bob Seger track, it’s just Dusty.

Kari Gunter-Seymour’s second full-length collection resounds with candid, lyrical poems about Appalachia’s social and geographical afflictions and affirmations. History, culture, and community shape the physical and personal landscapes of Gunter-Seymour’s native southeastern Ohio soil, scarred by Big Coal and fracking, while food insecurity and Big Pharma leave their marks on the region’s people. A musicality of language swaddles each poem in hope and a determination to endure. Alone in the House of My Heart offers what only art can: a series of thought-provoking images that evoke such a clear sense of place that it’s familiar to anyone, regardless of where they call home.
