Mabry-Hazen House: Night at the Museum II

Mabry-Hazen House is hosting its second Night at the Museum of 2023 on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 6pm-9pm! Attend for a chance to visit the house museum after-hours on a weekday and drink up a little history. Explore the 1858 historic house in an entirely different light as twilight falls upon Mabry’s Hill, watch the sun set behind Sharp’s Ridge and North Knoxville flicker alight, all while enjoying drinks from a local brewery.

Presale online tickets are $10 per adult and visitors under 16 are free. Each purchased ticket includes 2 (two) adult beverages and additional drinks are $5. A small processing fee is applied to tickets purchased online. Tickets will be available at the door for $15.

Julie Paine Fritz grew up on a small farm in Knoxville, Tennessee in the Fifties. She has lived in many spectacular landscapes across the country but spent the most time on the banks of the James River in Virginia.

Professionally she managed special events installations including the Honda Golf Classic, Gold Meadow Steeplechase, US Indoor Tennis, US Open Tennis, 2 presidential inaugurations. She had her own marketing firm and was well known for creating many fund raising events to support nonprofit programs.

Poet Betsy Holleman Burke, (Betsy Christenberry) the author of Reclamation (2022), All That Remains (2020), and Searching for Hummingbirds (2014), was born and raised in Knoxville on the Tennessee River. Her Kingston Pike home was the gracious center of life for her family and friends for over sixty years.

Betsy began writing poetry after the untimely death of her husband two decades ago and the daily visit of a hummingbird. She is passionate about learning the craft and enjoys a thirteen year association with Professor David Keplinger and the Surrey Street Poets in Washington, DC. She work has appeared in numerous journals and two anthologies, Such Friends As These (2019) and Sixty Years of the Moose (2022).

Songs and Stories: Mic Harrison and Josh Smith

Two of East Tennessee’s most renowned artists will perform for the Songs and Stories series taking place at The Station at 7 pm

Mic Harrison and Josh Smith have earned individual accolades as two of the most engaging and entertaining and singer, songwriters and band leaders East Tennessee has to offer. And rightfully so.

On Wednesday, May 24th, the two will share a stage, swap songs and offer an intimate performance that you don’t want to miss!

Lee Zimmerman, the host for Songs and Stories, is an accomplished writer, blogger and reviewer and co-host with Billy Hubbard for the popular pod quest, “My Backstage Pass.”

Forest bathing is back by popular demand! On May 24from 6-8 pm join us at the Forest Bathing Workshop and spend a relaxing two hours connecting with nature with ANFT-trained forest therapy guide Sarah Schortz at the Ijams Homesite. Everyone knows that being in nature is good for our wellbeing, but often we don't know how to slow down and just BE to receive all the healing, restorative gifts that nature has to offer. During this immersive experience, you will be guided through a series of relaxing activities designed to help you slow down, and mindfully engage with and explore the natural world through your senses while you discover new ways of being in and with nature.

7th Annual Tennessee Pirate Fest

This family-friendly event occurs at a rustic outdoor festival site located in Harriman, about 30 miles west of Turkey Creek. All are invited to escape to the pirate haven of Port Royal, Jamaica, circa 1674.

The Tennessee Pirate Fest is planned for May 20-21, 27-28-29, 2023, from 11a-6p ET, at 550 Fiske Road. The festival will include eight acres of outdoor family-friendly stage entertainment, interactive costumed street characters, quality vendors, and a variety of games and activities.

Tri-Star Arts is pleased to present the next exhibition in their Main Gallery at the historic Candoro Marble Building. A two-person show, Internal Logic, featuring recent mixed media works by artists Kimberly Dummons (Murfreesboro, TN, USA) and Tracy Treadwell (Memphis, TN, USA) opens Friday, May 19, 2023 and will run through Saturday, July 8, 2023. Tri-Star Arts is pleased to present the next exhibition in their Golden Chain Gallery project space located at the historic Candoro Marble Building. Studies by Nichole Schappert (Knoxville, TN, USA) opens Friday, May 19, 2023 and will run through Saturday, July 8, 2023. This show is located within the unique architectural space of a steep wooden stairwell and elements will be added to it by the artist over the duration of the exhibition.

Knoxville Museum of Art: Closed for renovations

May 8 – June 15, 2023 the Knoxville Museum of Art will be closed for gallery renovations. We will reopen June 16, 2023 with a projection-based sculptural installation by artist Courtney Egan, up through August 27. Followed by Jane Cassidy’s audio-visual installation Drink Up the Moon September 1-November 12, 2023.
