The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from October 6-28, 2023. A free gathering with the artists will take place on Friday, October 6, from 5:00-9:00 PM and features a showcase of original performances.

The current world we live in is a fast paced, scrolling world. We move through it and most of the time do not take in the details. There are benefits to moving through the world deliberately. When we take the time to see, we notice the things that connect us like architecture, places and objects, as well as those things that make us unique like language and culture. I use my needle and thread like a drawing implement, tracing and outlining places I’ve seen while traveling as a content, single woman. Needle craft and sewing have historically been considered “women’s work” and utilitarian, yet in this series, my experiences as a woman, and my stitching are elevated to fine art.

In this new exhibition, Kelly Sullivan displays stitched collages composed of fabrics she has dyed, found fabrics, vintage fabrics, handstitching and machine stitching, cyanotype and photo transfers that depict her travels through the world. In her screenprints, she uses collaged materials and stitching along with typical screenprinting processes to depict the same theme. This body of work is expressive through the choice of line quality, texture and color and mirror the life she sees on her travels.

Kelly Sullivan graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in printmaking but considers herself a mixed media artist. She has lived in South Florida, Atlanta, GA, Syracuse, NY and currently resides in Knoxville. She always finds a community where she can make art, learn new processes and teach what she is most passionate about. Sullivan worked at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts for two and a half years. Her work has shown at the Bascom in NC, Central Collective in Knoxville and at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg. She is currently the Arts Specialist, Sr. at Knoxville Arts Center (KAC) where she creates community arts programming. She teaches a wide variety of art classes at KAC, Arrowmont, Cancer Support Community of East Tennessee and Mighty Mud. She has been an active member of the Mayor’s Maker City Council.

This exhibition features selected archival pigment prints of original works Lynda Evans has created over the last 20 years. She works primarily in the genre of Figurative Realism, in a photo-realistic style; oil paintings on canvas, or charcoal, multimedia or photography on paper, are crafted in a very detailed, life-like portrait.

REMEMBRANCE is my personal “why”. Why do I paint and draw? Why the human body? Why figures in water? Why am I now drawing and painting horses and other animals? I paint to remember who I really am, to articulate the nature of humanity and the nature within all of life. I paint to connect with all that is interconnected by that divine, energetic, flow that creates us all. I believe we are spiritual beings in physical form. This is not about the story of flesh, in all its heroism, search for meaning, hopes, fears, addictions, and movement into ultimate disintegration. It is about the illusion of flesh, and the possibility of the heights to which the human spirit may rise. REMEMBRANCE is about the flash of understanding that happens when we recall we are not separate, but one. It is about our Divinity. REMEMBRANCE is also a call to action… a reminder to keep something alive.

Lynda Evans was born in Knoxville where she received an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee with a triple major in fine art, art education, and human services, also earning a Master of Theology from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. In the late-1990’s, she spent a decade in independent study and mentoring with internationally renowned artists and teachers. In the last 15 years, equine subjects have dominated her figurative work, as she desires to give voice to the soul of the horse. The Arts & Culture Alliance presents an exhibit of painting, photography, ceramics, textiles, printmaking, and more by 17 of the individual artists who are recipients of an FY24 Ann and Steve Bailey Opportunity Grant. Artists in the exhibition include: John Allen, Debbie Alley, Ilina Arsova, Carra Artis, Michelle Barillaro, Tim Bridges, Shannon Davis Brock, Rebecca Buglio, Melissa Everett, Karen Ferency, Kathleen Janke, Cheryl Massey, Ty Murray, Jeremy Myles, Luis Santiago, Jessie Van der Laan, and Houston Vandergriff. In addition, the First Friday reception features performances by artists who are also Bailey Opportunity grantees.

A part of the Arts & Heritage Fund, the Bailey Opportunity Grants provide financial and technical support to individual artists and small, professionally-oriented arts and culture organizations. The grants are designed to spur continued artistic and administrative growth in innovative, entrepreneurial artists and organizations at any stage in their development. Throughout the next eight months, the 19 individual artists will utilize their collective funds for local, regional, and national workshops, studio time, technical equipment, and more.

Nature Beauty and Sublime

"When we refer to beauty, we refer to a very ambiguous aesthetic term; that is, the theme of beauty is subjective. Since each era's concept of beauty changes, it evolves, and there are other intimate and inherent factors to space and time. However, when we talk about the sublime, we refer to something more intrinsic. In my artistic proposal, I try to make a fusion between feminine beauty and its environment — in addition to its relationship with the nature of our environment, seeking that state of reflection where the viewer can have a conscious vision of how beauty depends on how we perceive the cosmos of nature.

This exhibition came to represent a synthesis of a creative process that began a few years ago where the faces, figures, elements of nature, and architectural structures of Honduras are implicit. Evoking the colonial identity and the exuberance of our Latin American spaces, I also incorporate the landscape that blends with the environment of the work.

Regarding the formal dimension of my work, it is symmetrical and asymmetrical compositions that seek the balance of being in its environment ranging from faces with neat finishes that go beyond denotative representation and seek to find that point of balance between the beautiful and sublime of our land Latin America."

Inspired by the social implication of beauty and its relationship to female identity, women and culture. Topics of real and false, decoration, and imitation are explored in two and three dimensional working methods, using traditional and non-conventional approaches to printmaking, and sculpture.

Althea Murphy-Price began her studies in Fine Art at Spelman College before receiving her Master of Arts in Printmaking and Painting from Purdue University and later studying at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University where she earned her Master of Fine Arts. Her artwork has been shown widely throughout the country as well as international cities in Spain, China, Japan, Italy and Sweden. Her writings and work have been featured in such publications as Art Papers Magazine, CAA Reviews, Contemporary Impressions Journal, Art in Print, Printmaking: A Complete Guide to Materials and Process., and Printmakers Today.

Cherokee basketry and Southern Appalachian basket styles are on display now at Pellissippi State Community College’s Strawberry Plains Campus. The “All the Eggs in One Basket” exhibit curated by Art Professor Jeffrey Lockett is free and open to the public through the college’s Appalachian Heritage Project, which is housed in the Strawberry Plains Campus Library. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Appalachian Heritage Project serves as a repository for regional literature, history and folklore and includes programming including exhibits, lectures and workshops. “Abundant river cane in the Southern Appalachians contributes to its widespread use in weaving and basketry,” Lockett said. “The known works of the 17th century Cherokee Indians introduced the unique combination of materials and weave patterns using this cane.”

In the 18th and 19th centuries, storage baskets were used for daily needs such as harvesting, transportation and food preparation, Lockett added. However, as mountain tourism and markets for mountain crafts grew into the 20th century, Cherokee basket makers responded by producing baskets for the tourist trade. Most baskets on display in the "All the Eggs in One Basket” exhibit were made by Jimmy Lawrence of Clinton, Tennessee. Lawrence, born in 1937 in Abington, Virginia, is a Virginia Tech-educated mechanical engineer with a lifelong fascination with Appalachian crafts. He and his wife, Gail, have a regionally known collection of Southern folk art, crafts and utilitarian ware at their home.

“Jimmy says his curiosity for Southern crafts together with his engineering background has allowed him to approach basketmaking and weaving as an artform as well as an achievement in engineering,” said Lockett, who named the exhibit in honor of the variety of Lawrence’s traditional egg baskets that are on display. "Jimmy takes traditional Appalachian styles as well as Cherokee weaving traditions and varies the materials to include slippery elm bark, native cane and white oak.” All works in the exhibit are from the collections of Lawrence or Lockett. The Strawberry Plains Campus Library is open 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday.

The Tennessee Artist’s Association is holding its Annual Members Juried Art Show at the Fountain City Art Center, 213 Hotel Rd., Knoxville, 37918. A gala reception will be held on Sunday, October 1, 2:00 - 4:00 pm, and refreshments will be available. Fountain City Art Center regular hours are Tuesday- Thursday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

More than 40 artists and over 100 pieces of artwork will be represented at the show. Prizes include Best of Show, 1st Place, 2nd Place, & 3rd Place in various categories, including Portraiture, Figurative & Animals; Abstract, including 3-D & Collage; Landscapes, including Seascapes & Streetscapes; Flowers & Still Life; and Emerging Artists will be featured.

Juror is Michael C. Berry, a working artist and professor of art at UT. Berry is known for his dynamic urban compositions that bend and twist the cityscapes that have become his unique style. Berry was the 2007 Dogwood Arts Festival Limited Edition Print Artist and has earned various awards and recognitions over the years.

TAA is celebrating 51 years as the area’s oldest member supported arts organization. TAA members work in many different genres of art and types of media and at various levels of ability. TAA seeks to be inclusive of all members and encourages active participation in shows and events.

Tennessee Artists Association meets monthly at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 6500 Northshore Dr., Knoxville. TAA - A place to learn and grow as an artist. Faith Yared is an artist and undergraduate student who uses acrylic and water-based mediums to make narratives of worlds with people in their everyday lives. For this exhibition, Faith planned to really challenge herself by making a set of paintings that related to each other, forming together to make one complete narrative. She truly wanted to embrace the complexity of storytelling in her rendition of these paintings.
