The WordPlayers: Fiddler on the Roof

Category: Music and Theatre

The WordPlayers will present Fiddler on the Roof July 12 at 7.30, July 13 at 2.30 and 7.30, and July 14 at 2.30. Performances are at the Clarence Brown Theatre on the UTK campus. Reserved tickets from $23-$34 are available at www.wordplayers.org under the “buy tickets” tab and will be available at the door.

This year marks the 60th anniversary since Fiddler first opened on Broadway. The show has become a staple of the musical theatre canon. It's the timeless story of a working-class man, Tevye, trying to protect his daughters and instill in them traditional values despite changing social norms. Tevye is part of a tight-knit Jewish community during a time of growing anti-Semitism in Czarist Russia. This setting adds a level of historical and ethnic detail which, given current events in the Middle East, will resonate powerfully for our contemporary audiences. Ultimately, the themes of tradition, family, and societal upheaval cut across barriers of religion, race, class, and nationality. We expect audiences will be moved by all kinds of emotions, crying tears of laughter, sadness, and joy.

Once again, The WordPlayers will utilize all local talent on stage, in the orchestra, backstage, and on the creative team. For more information about The WordPlayers, please see www.wordplayers.org.
