Mabry-Hazen House: Night at the Museum
Category: Festivals, special events and History, heritage
Mabry-Hazen House is hosting its first Night at the Museum of 2023 on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 from 6:00 - 9:00 PM! Attend for a chance to visit the house museum after-hours on a weekday and drink up a little history. Explore the 1858 historic house in an entirely different light as twilight falls upon Mabry’s Hill, watch the sun set behind Sharp’s Ridge and North Knoxville flicker alight, all while enjoying drinks provided by a local brewery.
This "historical happy hour" is not just about the festivity either; it’s about connecting with history and gathering at the museum to meet staff, volunteers, and local community members in a casual atmosphere.
The historic home will be open for self-guided tours with staff available for questions. There will be behind-the-scenes access to the bottom floor at 7:30pm. Mabry-Hazen House also will continue its history series where we share an artifact or objects that normally are not on display.
Outdoor seating will be set-up on the front porch and lawn for groups to relax. Guests are encouraged to bring games, stories, blankets, and/or camp chairs.
Presale online tickets are $10 per adult and visitors under 16 are free. Online tickets can be purchased at www.mabryhazen.com/natm. A small processing fee is applied to tickets purchased online. Tickets also will be available at the door for $13 and current Mabry-Hazen House members still get in for $10.
Each purchased attendee ticket receives 1 (one) drink tickets, with additional drinks at $5 per ticket.
All proceeds benefit Mabry-Hazen House.
In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled to the following week, March 26, 2025.
Purchase tickets at www.mabryhazen.com/natm.

Sundress Academy: Intro to Creative Writing
Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, Literature, spoken word, writing and Virtual
"A lot of curiosities" workshop
The Sundress Academy for the Arts is excited to present "a lot of curiosities" an intro to creative writing workshop led by Danielle Shandiin Emerson on Wednesday, March 19 from 6:00-7:30 PM EST. This event will be held over Zoom. Participants can access the event at tiny.utk.edu/sundress (password: safta).
This is a hybrid introductory workshop titled, "a lot of curiosities": an intro to creative writing workshop, based off of an interview by Diné author, Stacie Denetsosie where she notes how asking questions and curiosity influences her writing. Storytelling comes from a place of warmth. It draws ever-changing connections between home, family, memory, and culture. This generative, crafty workshop aims to introduce a series of tools, ideas, and curiosities to storytellers of all levels, but especially those looking to dip their toes into creative writing for the first time. The workshop will consist of a short discussion asking the question: what is creative writing? And a guided session of an open writing prompt, titled ‘The Hands That Make Us.” Through this generative prompt, we’ll explore the stories in our hands, literally. Participants will come out with either a poem or piece of hybrid prose, based on their preferences.
Danielle Shandiin Emerson is a Diné writer from Shiprock, New Mexico on the Navajo Nation. Her clans are Tłaashchi’i (Red Cheek People Clan), born for Ta’neezaahníí (Tangled People Clan). She has a B.A. in Education Studies and a B.A. in Literary Arts from Brown University. She’s a 2024 GrubStreet Emerging Writers Fellow, a 2024 Lambda Literary Fellow, and a 2024 Diné Artisan + Author Capacity Building Institute Fellow. She has work published and/or forthcoming from swamp pink, Kweli Journal, Poets.org, Yellow Medicine Review, Thin Air Magazine, The Chapter House Journal, and others.
East Tennessee History Center: The Year of the Censure: President Andrew Jackson and the American Scene in 1834
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
12 PM with Dan Feller
This talk will feature highlights from the recently published 1834 volume of The Papers of Andrew Jackson. The centerpiece of the year was the official censure of President Jackson by the United States Senate, the only time that has ever happened. Other exciting events included Jackson’s campaign to destroy the federally chartered Bank of the United States, a looming confrontation with the Cherokee Indians, lurid scandals in the Post Office Department, assassination threats against the president, a bungled effort to buy Texas from Mexico, and the burning of Jackson’s Hermitage home.
Daniel Feller is an American historian with a research specialty in the antebellum, Jacksonian, and Civil War eras. He earned his PhD at Wisconsin and taught at Northland College and University of New Mexico before coming to UT in 2003. Since then, he and his team have produced six volumes of The Papers of Andrew Jackson, covering the presidential years from 1829 through 1834.

Clarence Brown Theatre: Failure: A Love Story
BY PHILIP DAWKINS
LAB THEATRE
A magical fable with music. This exciting new play tells the story of the Fail family and their seemingly difficult challenge to just stay alive around blunt objects, disappearances and the odd case of consumption. Sometimes you just never see death coming. In this upbeat, tuneful, magical fable you can either worry about the ever-impending death or you can live, love, and sing some songs along the way.

Kite Symphony is a multidisciplinary exhibition by Roberto Carlos Lange and Kristi Sword. The project features a series of drawings called Radio Telescope. Two films, one experimental piece called Star Scores, will be scored live during the Big Ears festival, and a film documenting sculptural interventions during their time in Marfa, Texas. Sound is the throughline between these diverse elements of this long-term project. Lange is a musician (widely known as Helado Negro), Sword is a visual artist, and Kite Symphony is an extension of their collaborative practice where they create work at the intersection of music, performance, and visual art. Parts of the film were originally commissioned by Ballroom Marfa and organized by Sarah Melendez.
“Lange, better known as Helado Negro, teams with the visual artist Kristi Sword for a sprawling and inspired project paying tribute to the Marfa, Texas sky.” – Pitchfork
