Amadeus Concert Ensemble: The Golden Age of Strauss

  • March 9, 2025

Category: Free event and Music

The season reaches its climax on Sunday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. with THE GOLDEN AGE OF STRAUSS, a thrilling homage to four composers who share a legendary name. Richard will be represented by selections from Ariadne auf Naxos and Der Rosenkavalier including its stunning “Presentation of the Rose” and ethereal Final Scene. Oscar’s contribution will be the romantic “My Hero” from The Chocolate Soldier. A tribute to “The Waltz King” Johann Jr. includes his “Voices of Spring” and highlights from Die Fledermaus. Closing the popular program will be Johann Sr.’s Radetsky March. To honor the tradition when this work is performed at the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day concerts, the audience will be invited to clap along with the music! In their ACE and Knoxville debuts will be soprano Ashley Fabian (“immense warmth and scintillating spin”/Parterre Box) and mezzosoprano Anna Kelly (“divine”/Palm Beach Post). They will be joined by soprano Maria Brea (“gloriously luxurious voice”/OnStage Pittsburgh), who previously performed in ACE’s Mozart Operatic Feast and Fiesta Española.

Category: History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Music

Sunday, March 9 | 2:00 | East Tennessee History Center| Free

Join us for this stirring testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of music as Dr. James Grymes discusses his book, Violins of Hope: Instruments of Hope and Liberation in Mankind's Darkest Hour. In it, he recounts the extraordinary journeys of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust—and of the Israeli violinmaker devoted to restoring these cherished instruments. Once silenced, these violins will once again sing, carrying with them the voices of those who played them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtJsw67Re3Y

Dr. James A. Grymes, an internationally respected musicologist and critically acclaimed author, was awarded the National Jewish Book Award for Violins of Hope.

This event is part of a larger, community-wide program that includes an exhibition, school visits, and concerts by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Many thanks to Wanda and John Sobieski for their generous support of this author talk.

This three-day event is held on the Webb School of Knoxville campus in West Knoxville. Now in its 22nd year, ArtXtravaganza has become one of the premier art shows in the Southeast, and has helped to further the careers of prominent artists. ArtXtravaganza showcases the amazing range and diversity of artistic talent in the region and beyond, and helps establish Knoxville as a community aligned with the arts. Also on exhibit are works by Webb Lower, Middle, and Upper School students.

This four-to-six-week on-campus teaching and learning experience features nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. It provides Webb students with a view into the real world of art by exposing them to professional artists, their work, and their perspectives, and inspires students to explore their own creative abilities. Arts & Culture Alliance: Kerry Remp: From Paper to Thread to Yarn

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville opening on Friday, March 7, from 5:00-9:00 PM. A free gathering with the exhibiting artists will also feature live music by Sarrenna, Travis Bigwood and Nicholas Horner.

Kerry Remp is a retired NASA Engineer and professional pianist who enjoys the exploration of various mediums to “build” art. A musician from the age of three, Remp discovered visual art, via paper (modular origami) at age 40. Once he was hooked on creating, other paper art forms such as quilling, sculpture and portraiture began to take shape. At age 60, he began exploring the creation process using thread and eventually yarn. Currently involved in weaving on a rigid heddle loom, the love of creating continues to inspire him. He has been an active participant in Arts & Culture Alliance activities since retiring to Tennessee in 2017. In addition to individual commissions and sales, he has participated in displays/shows at the Emporium, Broadway Gallery and City/County Offices. Since becoming a grandfather to Malakai (a boy born with Downs Syndrome), all proceeds from his artwork are donated to GiGi's Playhouse, a non-profit organization that provides free programming and support to families affected by Downs Syndrome through 60+ locations across the United States.

The exhibitions will be on display March 7-30, 2025 at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902.
Gallery hours: Mon-Fri 9-5; Sat 10-1. Additional hours: Tue Mar 11, 6-9 PM (jazz performance); Fri Mar 14, 9 AM – 7 PM (Gallery 1010 opening); BIG EARS WEEKEND: Wed-Thu Mar 26-27, 9 AM – 9 PM; Fri-Sat Mar 28-29, 10 AM – 9 PM; Sun Mar 30, 10 AM – 8 PM.
