Amadeus Concert Ensemble: The Golden Age of Strauss
Category: Free event and Music
The season reaches its climax on Sunday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. with THE GOLDEN AGE OF STRAUSS, a thrilling homage to four composers who share a legendary name. Richard will be represented by selections from Ariadne auf Naxos and Der Rosenkavalier including its stunning “Presentation of the Rose” and ethereal Final Scene. Oscar’s contribution will be the romantic “My Hero” from The Chocolate Soldier. A tribute to “The Waltz King” Johann Jr. includes his “Voices of Spring” and highlights from Die Fledermaus. Closing the popular program will be Johann Sr.’s Radetsky March. To honor the tradition when this work is performed at the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day concerts, the audience will be invited to clap along with the music! In their ACE and Knoxville debuts will be soprano Ashley Fabian (“immense warmth and scintillating spin”/Parterre Box) and mezzosoprano Anna Kelly (“divine”/Palm Beach Post). They will be joined by soprano Maria Brea (“gloriously luxurious voice”/OnStage Pittsburgh), who previously performed in ACE’s Mozart Operatic Feast and Fiesta Española.
Free reservations are required and may be made about three weeks prior to each concert on the Cathedral’s website: www.shcathedral.org.

ARTXTRAVAGANZA is Webb School’s annual art sale that showcases original artworks by nearly 65 acclaimed artists and offers affordable works for everyone – from fine art, handcrafted jewelry, and pottery to glassworks, sculptures, and metal art. This three-day event is held on the Webb School of Knoxville campus in West Knoxville. Now in its 22nd year, ArtXtravaganza has become one of the premier art shows in the Southeast, and has helped to further the careers of prominent artists. ArtXtravaganza showcases the amazing range and diversity of artistic talent in the region and beyond, and helps establish Knoxville as a community aligned with the arts. Also on exhibit are works by Webb Lower, Middle, and Upper School students.
Proceeds from ArtXtravaganza support Webb School of Knoxville’s visual and performing arts. A hallmark of Webb's arts education is the school's Artist-In-Residence program. This four-to-six-week on-campus teaching and learning experience features nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. It provides Webb students with a view into the real world of art by exposing them to professional artists, their work, and their perspectives, and inspires students to explore their own creative abilities. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from this year's ArtXtravaganza will go to fund a one-year scholarship for a student at Knoxville's Community School of the Arts.
Theatre Knoxville Downtown: The Importance of Being Earnest
By Oscar Wilde
Directed by Christina Scott Sayer
A Trivial Comedy for Serious People. Responsible, mild-mannered Jack Worthing is harboring a couple of secrets. First, he is in love with his friend Algernon’s cousin, Gwendolen. And second, they both think his name is Ernest. In fact, Ernest is Jack’s imaginary alter ego – a troubled younger brother he created so that he could do whatever he liked in London and no one would ever think to judge him. But when Algernon catches on to the scheme, he decides to be Ernest himself in order to woo Jack’s lovely young ward, Cecily. Confusion and hilarity reign, as the ladies try to disentangle the stories of their respective Ernests and jump the seemingly impossible hurdles to marry the Ernest they each love.
