Category: Free event, History, heritage and Science, nature

In honor of our country’s armed forces, the Museum of Appalachia will offer free admission to veterans and active-duty military on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11. “We appreciate those who risk their lives for our country,” said Elaine Meyer, the Museum’s president, “and this is one way to recognize these people and show that we appreciate the sacrifices they’ve made.”

The Museum’s mission is to preserve Appalachian heritage for future generations. Historical offerings of particular interest to veterans are displays on the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, as well as some other military ventures. A German M1908/15 Maxim light machine gun captured by Sgt. Alvin C. York in the closing days of World War I is housed in the Museum’s Hall of Fame, along with other York artifacts. The Museum also includes exhibits on early gun-making, blacksmithing, sawmilling, carpentry, coopering, leatherworking, basket making, and other pioneer skills. Visitors may take a self-guided tour of the Museum’s extensive village-farm complex with some three dozen historic log structures, display buildings filled with authentic Appalachian artifacts, gardens, and farm animals, all in a picturesque setting surrounded by split-rail fences. Shoppers may browse for regional books and unique hand-made gifts in the Shop at the Museum of Appalachia. Guests can enjoy a warm fire while eating a scrumptious Country lunch, served daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Museum restaurant; drinks and Southern, home-made desserts available all day. November hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (closed Thanksgiving Day). The Museum is located 16 miles north of Knoxville, one mile east of I-75, exit 122. Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

On January 17, 1979, driven by new information that some of the worst criminals in the state penitentiary were to be released (including possibly James Earl Ray), state leaders on both sides of the aisle came together to stop what one FBI agent called "the state's most heinous political crime in half a century." In his new book, Coup: The day the Democrats Ousted Their Governor, Put Republican Lamar Alexander in Office Early, and Stopped a Pardon Scandal, Keel Hunt tells an insider's story of the intrigue, personalities, conversations and actions that led to the unprecedented ouster of Tennessee Governor Ray Blanton from office, an actin unique in American history. Hunt will be joined by a panel featuring then-U.S. Attorney Hal Hardin and John Siegenthaler, editor of the Tennessean. Books available.
