George Clinton stands as one of the most prominent innovators of funk music in America, and his funk-rock-soul collective Parliament-Funkadelic has carved out its own subgenre of funk music with its particular stylistic interpretations. The Parliaments began as a young Clinton's first group, a doo-wop-Motown band that never quite made it big. Once its backing, a small record label called Revilot, folded, Clinton formed Funkadelic, a new band strongly influenced by Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, and Sly and the Family Stone. As its sound solidified into psychedelic rock-funk, Parliament re-emerged after departures and returns of several band members, notably Bootsy Collins. At this point, the band became more heavily influenced by jazz and incorporated significant unique funk mythologies into its lyrics. Modern-day band members tour as "George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars" or "George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic". Some former members of Parliament perform under the name "Original P." Regardless, 11 members of the collective were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, and the group has been touring strong since the early days of funk. Lending strong influence and highly circulated musical samples to modern day R&B, the inimitable style of George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic is immortal.

As part of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s Harriet Z. Albers Memorial Brown Bag Lecture Series, Dr. Jennifer E. Brooks will present American Enka and the Modern Labor Movement in the auditorium of the East Tennessee History Center. The free lecture is a special program associated with the Museum of East Tennessee History’s current feature exhibition, American Enka and the Modern Labor Movement, on view through May 15, 2011.

The American Enka and the Modern Labor Movement exhibition, curated by Dr. Jennifer E. Brooks, examines the 1950 strike at the American Enka plant in Hamblen County.

In partial fulfillment of their graduation requirements, students pursuing the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are required to mount a solo exhibition of work, and to defend their work during an oral examination in front of a faculty committee.
Due to the number of graduate students enrolled in the UT Department of Art, these exhibitions generally take the form of small groups of students presenting concurrent solo exhibitions in the gallery space. Now in its fifth year, this world-class exhibition of 25 large-scale sculptures can be viewd in downtown Knoxville and the McGhee Tyson Airport. The 2011 exhibition juror will be John Henry and will feature up to 35 large-scale, outdoor sculptures. The selected sculptures will be exhibited in downtown Knoxville. "Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident" exhibit details the story of Francis Gary Powers, a U-2 pilot flying photographic reconnaissance missions for the CIA. His plane was downed by a Soviet surface-to air missile on May 1, 1960 and he was convicted of being a spy and held in Russian prison until February 11, 1962, when he was dramatically exchanged for a Soviet spy in New York, in the first Cold War Spy exchange.
