The Tennessee Valley Opera (formerly the Monroe Area Opera) will be presenting Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operetta “Iolanthe” for 3 performances only (April 30, May 1 and May 7.) The Saturday April 30th performance will be at 7:30 pm at the Athens Arts Center, 320 North White Street in Athens. There will be performances on Sunday May 1 at 3:00pm and Saturday May 7th at 7:30 pm at the new state-of-the-art theater at the Sweetwater Elementary School, 301 Broad Street in Sweetwater.

Dogwood Arts Festival: Chalk Walk

Chalk Walk features large sidewalk paintings created by professional and student artists on the sidewalk areas of Krutch Park and Market Square in downtown Knoxville. Thought to have originated in Italy in the 16th century, street painting is a growing event at many community festivals. The Dogwood Arts continues to bring this event to Knoxville as a way to teach and promote the history of this lost art to all ages and levels of artists. Jubilee Community Arts: Maggie Longmire

Maggie Longmire from LaFollete, Tennessee is a folk singer, blues rocker (member in good standing of the legendary Lonesome Coyotes) and roots music writer of songs with evoking lyrics and haunting melodies. Her performance of Granddaughters, An Americana Opera, a project of original songs co-written with her brother John, was a sellout at the Laurel in 2008. Her first solo project Teachers and Travelers was awarded Best Album of the year by Metro Pulse. She will be joined by Doug Klein, Jay Manneschmidt and Daniel Kimbro.
