HISTORIC RUGBY’S VISITING SPEAKER SERIES

Join us at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time to hear a long-time friend of Rugby, Nancy Jensen. Nancy is the author of “The Sisters”. She will offer readings, discussions and book signings of her novel.

In celebration of the wonders of springtime and the rich heritage represented in the six historic homes located within Greater Knoxville, two three-hour bus tours will be offered. The Morning and Afternoon tours feature a step-on tour guide who will discuss points of interest and history and will highlight historic landmarks in and around Knoxville. The tours stop at each historic home for approximately 50 minutes, allowing guests to tour the homes, grounds, and gardens.

Music of Scotland & Ireland
Jamie will present a program of traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, Bretagne, Galicea, Quebec, and Appalachia. Winner of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship (2002), Laval has appeared on the NBC Today Show, has performed for Her Majesty the Queen, and won Best World Traditional Song in the 2007 Independent Music Awards Vox Populi. His recent tour of Scotland found him performing at the Scots Fiddle Festival in Edinburgh and teaching at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His third album, Murmurs and Drones, was released last year.

The Morning Tour, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, begins at Blount Mansion, 200 W. Hill Avenue (www.blountmansion.org) and includes visits to Marble Springs Historic Farmstead (www.marblesprings.net).and Crescent Bend House & Gardens (www.crescentbend.com).

The Afternoon Tour, from 1:00-4:00 PM, begins at James White’s Fort, 205 E. Hill Avenue (www.jameswhitesfort.org) and includes visits to to Mabry-Hazen House (www.mabryhazen.com) and Ramsey House Plantation (www.ramseyhouse.org)

Free parking is available at both Blount Mansion for the Morning tour and James White’s Fort for the Afternoon tour. A one hour lunch break is scheduled between the Morning and Afternoon tours for guests who may wish to attend both tours. Seating is limited and reservations are required. The Fresh Beat Band, Nickelodeon's popular preschool music group and stars of the hit TV series of the same name, will perform iin Knoxville on Saturday, April 14, at 5:00 PM. Kiki (Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer), Shout (Thomas Hobson), Marina (Tara Perry), and Twist (Jon Beavers) will perform The Fresh Beat Band hits from seasons one, two and three of the live-action music series that teaches preschoolers about music appreciation and how to express their feelings through movement, song and instrumental music. The annual Spring Benefit of the Appalachian Arts Craft Center will be held Saturday, April 14, at the Norris Community Building starting at 7 p.m. The event will include music by the swing band The Little Big Band; hors d’oeuvres, desserts and a variety of beverages; door prizes and a silent auction featuring Charles Counts pottery, handmade crafts from the center’s many artisans, themed baskets, and services. $15 if purchased by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 13; $20 at the door. Warren Haynes Band

After touring with The Allman Brothers Band, The Dead, Gov’t Mule and many other rock and blues acts, Warren Haynes has become quite the legend. Known primarily for his prolific guitar skills, Haynes is also a singer and a songwriter, and often gets together with other big names in the business to execute extraordinary one-time performances. On Saturday, April 14, Haynes brings the Warren Haynes Band to the Bijou. Tickets for this event go on sale Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m., but get them quickly. They’re sure to go fast!

Marilyn Kallet, director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Tennessee, will lead a poetry writing workshop in which participants explore language to express joy derived from the senses. “O Taste and See in East Tennessee!” will consist of hands-on writing, prompts and publication advice. The workshop will be held at Church of the Savior, 934 N. Weisgarber Rd. Cost is $25 for KWG members and $30 for nonmembers. Kallet will be pulling from years of experience as both a writer and teacher for the event. She is the author of 15 books, including “Packing Light: New and Selected Poems,” and translations from the French of Surrealist poets Paul Eluard and Benjamin Péret. She has taught poetry workshops for more than 30 years. Each spring she teaches the poetry workshop, “O Taste and See: Writing the Senses in Deep France,” for the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Auvillar, France. “The Knoxville version of ‘O Taste and See’ will explore the sensory delights of our local surroundings, to enrich our poetry. We will taste some good dark chocolate as we write,” Kallet said. Limited to 10 participants, the workshop will serve as a fundraiser for the Knoxville Writers’ Guild, as Kallet generously has agreed to donate all earnings to KWG.

Dr. Kallet was a founding member of the Knoxville Writers' Guild, and a past member of the board of directors. She has won the Tennessee Arts Commission Literary Fellowship in Poetry, and has served on the TAC Literary Advisory Board. She was elected to the East Tennessee Literary Hall of Fame in Poetry, in 2005, and was named Woman of Achievement in the Arts by the Knoxville YWCA, in 2000. She has performed her poems on campuses and in theaters across the United States, as well as in Poland, as a guest of the U.S. Embassy's “America Presents” program, in France, and in Austria. She has mentored thousands of poets, many of whom have gone on to publish books of their own, and to win national awards.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! It's time to celebrate the Bard!
Get thee to Shakesfest, where teens and their teachers are invited to make merry for Shakespeare's birthday on Saturday, April 14, 1- 4:30 p.m. at the East Tennessee History Center.

Knox County Public Library is pleased to present an afternoon full of Elizabethan fun. Young adult author J.B. Cheaney, author of Shakespearean-themed books The Playmaker and The True Prince, will discuss her writing experience and sign books. Teens can also enjoy a presentation from Tom Parkhill, Artistic Director of the Tennessee Stage Company. The whole event is free and open to the public. Come and revel in such stuff that dreams are made on!
