Inaugural Volunteer Canoe and Kayak Race

  • April 27, 2012 — April 28, 2012

Category: Festivals, special events

This weekend, April 27 – 28, River Sports Outfitters and seasoned kayaker Charles Goodson will team up to host the inaugural Volunteer Canoe and Kayak Race at Riverside Landing Park in Knoxville, Tenn.

Paddlers have their choice of four canoe and kayaking races: 80 mile, 46 mile, 28 mile, or 5 mile. Events are open to all paddle, peddle, and stand-up paddlers alike.

“I want to try to keep it an everyman’s race,” event coordinator, Charles Goodson said. “It’s more of a challenge to yourself, than who can finish fastest.”

The key races include the Volunteer 80 Race to the Smokies, which includes an 80-mile route to Chilhowee Dam at the base of the beautiful Smoky Mountains, the Volunteer 46, which finishes at Tellico Dam, the Volunteer 28, a 28-mile route that finishes at the Cove at Concord Park, and the Volunteer 5, a 5-mile beginner course that ends at Marine Park.

Start time for the 80-mile, 46-mile, and 28-mile races is 8:00 a.m., and the 5-mile race begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Paddlers will have 40 hours to complete the longest course, which will end at midnight on April 29.

All racers must attend the mandatory race check-in and safety meeting on Friday, April 27. A complete list of rules for the race series can be found on the event’s website at www.appalachiakayak.com. Race course maps can be found at http://www.lrn.usace.army.mil/opn/TNRiver/.

Athens Community Theater: Duck Hunter Shoots Angel

  • April 19, 2012 — April 28, 2012
  • 7:30 PM, April 22 at 2:00 PM

Category: Theatre

The Athens Community Theater will present their spring comedy, Duck Hunter Shoots Angel by Mitch Albom in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center on April 19-28, 2012. It is directed by veteran ACT actor, Dave Siklosi.

DUCK HUNTER SHOOTS ANGEL is the uproarious story of two bumbling Alabama brothers who have never shot a duck but think they shot an angel. As they lament their fates in a murky swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer, who don’t believe any of it – until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered along the way. The play hysterically interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase to find the angel builds to a crescendo in the swamp. Ultimately a sweet allegory about redemption, DUCK HUNTER SHOOTS ANGEL has been hailed by audiences as a rare comedy with a surprisingly heartfelt lesson.

Duck Hunter Shoots Angel opens with dinner theater by reservation only on Thursday, April 19th for $25 per person. The evening features a full meal and cash bar, beginning at 6:00 PM with show time at 7:30 PM. Other evening performances at 7:30 PM are April 20,21,26,27,28 and a Sunday matinee is offered on April 22 at 2PM. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students. Duck hunters with permits will be admitted for half price on Thursday, April 26. For more information or to order tickets, go to www.athensartscouncil.org, call 423-745-8781, or visit The Arts Center at 320 North White Street in downtown Athens.
