Maryville College Campus: Second Annual Smoky Mountain Highland Games

Join us in celebrating the second annual Smoky Mountain Highland Games. Tickets must be purchased in advance through the Smoky Mountain Highland Games Website.
On May 18, 2012 The Friday Night Gala will start off the weekend's festivities. There will be a formal dinner followed by a traditional haggis ceremony. Visitors can also experience a parade in downtown Maryville featuring pipe and drum bands and other entertainers.
May 19, 2012 - Gates open to the public at 8am. The opening ceremony will take place at 12pm.
May 20, 2012 - Scheduled to begin at 9:30am will be a worship service. The Games end with a closing ceremony beginning at 3pm.
Throughout the weekend there will be many activities for individuals, children and families to enjoy. Children may compete in versions of Highland Games competitions as well as other events. Knox County Public Library's 8th Annual Children's Festival of Reading

Join us on Saturday, May 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in World's Fair Park at the 8th annual kick off celebration for the Knox County Public Library's Summer Reading Programs and meet authors and illustrators who dreamed big and made it: Alyssa Capucilli, Jennifer and Matthew Holm, Gail Carson Levine, Dan Yaccarino, David Ezra Stein, Dianne de Las Casas and many more.
The Children's Festival of Reading celebrates the literary arts with six performance stages, a Parade of Books, arts and crafts, book sales, 50 community booths,food, music, storytelling, and tons of fun. Readers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for a summer of reading in one of the Library's summer reading clubs.
"This Festival does an outstanding job of encouraging families in the adventure of reading," commented Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett. "There's something for everyone. It's the best blend of fun and education."
This year, in salute to the International Biscuit Festival which also falls on May 19, the Library hosts Alyssa Capucilli, author of the popular Biscuit series. Biscuit is a fanciful yellow puppy who seeks adventure of all sorts and stars in the Harper Collins "My First I Can Read" series for emerging readers.
NEW TO THE FESTIVAL: Partnering with the L&N Stem Academy Students, the Science Village hosts "Mr. Bond, The Science Guy" as he demonstrates jaw-dropping, mind-bending, awe-inspiring experiments in front of your very eyes! Robots Alive! will feature L&N Stem Academy students as they explain robotic adventures. The UN-science Fair is where L&N Stem Academy students will show off their passion, enthusiasm, and know-how in experiments of their own.

US Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre: Neon Trees

Like their name, Neon Trees are a combination of slick pop hooks and sturdy organic rock. Both melodic and hard-hitting, their anthems are of adolescent angst, longing, love lost and found and are delivered with the kind of heart-on-the-sleeve passion that only comes from hard work and commitment. The double-platinum single “Animal,†from Neon Trees' 2010 debut Habits, has been covered by a wide range of artists from Taylor Swift to Train, even showing up on an episode of Glee. Knoxville Zoo: Princess and Pirate Day

Knoxville Zoo has a special day of make-believe fun planned for little rogues and royals! The zoo will be hosting Princess and Pirate Day on Saturday, May 19th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. On Princess and Pirate Day, children aged 12 and under
who come to the zoo dressed as a pirate or a princess will receive free admission to Knoxville Zoo with a paid adult admission. (Free admission cannot be combined with any other promotion or discount, and one child free with each paid adult admission on May 19th, 2012, only.) Princess and Pirate Day will also feature special swashbuckling activities, including a Sparkle Station for mini-manicures and face painting, and the first 300 guests aged 12 and under will receive a free gift to help celebrate the day.

International Biscuit Festival

The International Biscuit Festival is a celebration of that most perfect of foods – the Biscuit. The Festival combines food, fun and entertainment to create a unique destination event.
Kicking off the festivities, the International Biscuit Festival and Food Network present “An Evening with Alton Brown†at the Tennessee Theatre on Wednesday, May 16 at 8:00 pm. Alton Brown is the star of the Food Network show Good Eats and also hosts Iron Chef America. Brown will take the stage at the Tennessee Theatre with a lively show that shares behind the scenes stories from his career in television. Tickets: 865-684-1200 or www.tennesseetheatre.com
The Southern Food Writing Conference is the other big addition to the Biscuit Festival’s focus on Southern culture. The Conference will run Thursday and Friday and feature a panel of speakers that include some of the most noted Southern food writers in the nation. The Conference wraps up Friday evening with the Biscuit Book Signing in the Square Room at 4 Market Square.
On Saturday, the main Festival kicks off with lots of fun experiences for everyone. Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Biscuit Breakfast, where Biscuit lovers select from a big Biscuit buffet provided by the region’s top caterers. The Biscuit Bazaar vendor area opens at 9:00 am to showcase Biscuit-friendly wares, including jams, jellies, honey, sorghum, aprons, kitchenware, artwork and cookbooks. The main event in the afternoon is the Biscuit Bake Off, presented by Southern Biscuit® flour and mixes.

Bike rentals - $22 for half day per person or $37.50 all day per person
Canoes & Paddle Boards - $11 for per hour per boat
