The Tennessee Valley Fair is searching for talented young people ages 8-21. Open to all singers, dancers and musicians, the Fair is offering 3 youth talent competitions in 2012:

Knox Area Youth Talent Competition
Saturday, August 25 at 9 AM – West High School
Ages: 13-21 welcome; 1st prize wins $100 and an opportunity to compete in the Regional Youth Talent Competition on September 8.

Junior Youth Talent Competition
Saturday, September 8 at 4 PM – Pepsi Community Tent / Chilhowee Park
Ages: 8-12 welcome; 1st prize wins $100, a plaque and exclusive performance opportunities.

Regional Youth Talent Competition

The 93rd annual Tennessee Valley Fair will be held September 7-16.

August 11, 11a.m. - 1 p.m. Civil War Genealogy on the Internet--Finding your Civl War ancestor's records, regimental history, burials, obituaries. Pre-registration begins July 30.

September 15, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Internet Genealogy--Students use individual computers to explore the 12 major sites. Pre-registration begins September 3.

October 13, 11 a.m. - 12 noon. War of 1812 Genealogy--Find service, bounty land, pension, regimental information for your War of 1812 ancestor. Pre-registration begins October 1.

October 27, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Using County Records in Genealogical Research--Finding birth, death, court,deeds, divorces, probate, tax, wills to investigate your ancestors. No registration required.

November 10, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Internet genealogy--Students use individual computers to explore 12 major sites. Pre-registration begins October 29.

December 8, 1:15 - 4:15 p.m. Intermediate Internet Genealogy--Advanced techniques in genealogical research with special focus on primary resources. Pre-registration begins November 26.

Handbuilding with Clay, Four Wednesday Evenings: September 5, 12, and 19, and October 3, 6-9 p.m., with Sandra McEntire. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of watercolors and oils by local artists Steve Black and Betty Bullen. The exhibition will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 3-31, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on August 3 from 5:00-9:00 PM. Black and Bullen met through the Tennessee Artist’s Association, and while they have known each other for only for a few years, they have chaired exhibitions and worked on many projects together. “Oil versus Water” is their first exhibition together.

“Battle of the Mediums: Oil versus Water” will be on display at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition by the Townsend Artisan Guild (TAG) entitled “Destination Townsend”, featuring original paintings, photographs, mixed media, sculptures, jewelry, and more by nearly 30 local artists. African Dance class will consist of African dances styles, techniques, songs, and culture. Classes are designed to educate, motivate, and inspire you about the positive awareness of African Cultural Dance as a Whole. Class will consist of a mild warm-up of stretching, cardiovascular endurance, and developing footwork/body mechanics.

A traveling exhibition that follows the progress of the crisis, when for 14 days in October in 1962, the U.S. and the Soviet Union faced each other in a standoff over the USSR's installation of nuclear missiles in Cuba. Artifacts, audiovisuals, and posters tell the story. AMSE Second Level.

With guide commentary for U.S. citizens (10 years and up) with photo identification. This Public Bus Tour is offered Monday - Friday, once a day, except government holidays July 4 & 5. Bus Tour registration begins at 9 am, when AMSE opens. AMSE admission includes the DOE Facilities Public Bus Tour, when participants complete the Registration Sheet upon entering AMSE. Tour participants begin loading bus at 11:45 am, bus departs at 12 noon and returns to AMSE at 3 pm. Space is limited and some restrictions apply. Participants have four off-the-bus stops including Y-12 New Hope Visitor Center, Bethel Valley Church and Graphite Reactor, a national historic landmark, both at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the K-25 Overlook. Tour also includes a drive by of the Spallation Neutron Source.

The Frank H. McClung Museum will offer a new exhibit, "The Owl and the Woodpecker", which will introduce museum visitors to the most important species of owls and woodpeckers in North America, using spectacular photos, informative text, and evocative audio recordings to illustrate how these birds define and enrich the specific habitats on which they depend, and to highlight the critical importance of conserving those habitats.

"The Owl and the Woodpecker" is based on a book of the same title by Seattle photographer and author Paul Bannick, who is knkown for his intimate wildlife photography which supports environmental conservation efforts.

Knoxville Zoo offers one of only three chances to experience the zoo’s Close Encounters of the Wild Kind program this summer. Close Encounters of the Wild Kind gives visitors the chance to take an intimate behind-the-scenes tour and meet some high profile residents at Knoxville Zoo. Visitors can go off the beaten path to meet giraffes, penguins, or giant Aldabra tortoises during these special encounters. They also have the opportunity to touch or feed their new animal friend, talk with their keepers to learn about them and take a souvenir photo of their personal introduction. This Saturday, June 23rd, as well as Saturday, July 28th, and Saturday, September 1st, three different animal encounters will be offered; Giraffe Gatherings, where visitors can offer Jumbe, Lucille and Patches a leafy treat at 11:00 a.m., the Penguin Party which includes
a special appearance by Gypsy or Jello penguin at 1:00 p.m. and Tortoise Time, an encounter with loveable giant Aldabra tortoises Al, Stand-Up and Patches at 2:30 p.m.
Reservations are required for Close Encounters of the Wild Kind and can be scheduled by calling the zoo’s ticket office at (865) 637-5331, extension 361 or at the zoo’s ticket window upon arrival to the zoo. Each Close Encounter session is $20 per person, or $50 per person for all three encounters and reservations for each session are limited. Advanced reservations are highly recommended. General admission to Knoxville Zoo is not included in the price of each Close Encounter ticket.
