History comes alive at Old Gray as you stroll through 13 acres of the cemetery and visit with Knoxvillians from the past on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 4:00–7:00 PM (Rain or Shine).

This family event encourages young and old to enjoy a carriage ride in Knoxville’s oldest planned cemetery. Throughout the grounds there will be artists on location, musicians, and Civil War reenactors along with Civil War cannons.

The twenty minutes of concentrated fury of the Confederate attack against Fort Sanders, November 29, 1963, became the most prominent moment of the Civil War as it was fought in the heart of East Tennessee. Dr. Earl Hess will sort through fact and legend to show how Fort Sanders became a symbol of divided loyalties in Knoxville. The lecture will be heavily illustrated with photographs and paintings. The author of more than a dozen books on Civil War history, Dr. Hess is an associate professor of history at Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate.

Knoxville, TN: What do you get when you combine the glorious sounds of gospel and the magnificence of opera?

Multiple standing ovations by a crowd of 1,000 that have shouted “hallelujah” at the three previous performances of Knoxville Opera Goes to Church…A Celebration of Talent! The 4th annual concert, sponsored by Home Federal Bank, will feature the Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir and local soloists together with Knoxville Opera artists in a unique presentation of gospel, spirituals, opera and Broadway highlights. The free-admission concert, one of Knoxville Opera’s yearly 75 education/outreach activities, will take place on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. at the Greater Warner Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church (3800 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue). East TN PBS will be recording the concert to be telecast later in the year.

The event’s program will include Glorious, And He Blessed My Soul, Why Should I be Bound, I Can Go to God in Prayer,, Walk Together Children, Amazing Grace, Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen, and excerpts from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Kern’s Showboat and Bellini’s Norma.

We have decided to work on a new approach to our readings of Shakespeare’s plays at the library downtown and we have a new format that I think will be a lot of fun.

We are going to read quarterly rather than monthly, and we are going to look for people to direct each reading. So we’ll ask that they do a cutting and at least some casting ahead of time which we will then fill out with people who come and want to read on the day of. Reading quarterly rather than monthly will mean that directors will have more time to prepare their scripts and put some actors together. So, if you have an interest please contact me so we can set it up.

Our next reading is planned for December and we are looking to do “Twelfth Night” which we know was performed as a Christmas piece by Shakespeare’s company and for which we have a good cut on hand.

Pellissippi State Community College marks National Hispanic Heritage Month with celebrations on Sept. 20 and Oct. 12 at the Hardin Valley Campus in West Knoxville.

The Sept. 20 presentation features dance groups performing in the Goins Building College Center. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. It includes the following scheduled performances:
5:15-6 p.m.—Knoxville Argentine Tango Society
6:15-7 p.m.—Academy Ballroom Latin Dance Ensemble
7:15-8:15 p.m.—Pablo Garzon and Serenatta, Romantic Latin Ensemble, of Nashville

On Oct. 12, the Core Ensemble performs its chamber music theatre work “Tres Vidas,” 7-8:30 p.m. at the Clayton Performing Arts Center. Chamber music theatre is a format developed by the Core Ensemble that blends theatrical narrative and chamber music performance.

“Tres Vidas” is a celebration of the life, times and work of three significant Latin American women: painter Frida Kahlo of Mexico, peasant activist Ruffina Amaya of El Salvador and poet Alfonsina Storni of Argentina.

This year’s National Hispanic Heritage Month events are sponsored by Pellissippi State’s Access and Diversity Office, Student Life and Recreation, and Liberal Arts Department. The Hardin Valley Campus is located at 10915 Hardin Valley Road. For more information, call (865) 539-7160.

This is an exhibition by hispanic artists that live and work in the United States, particularly in the southeast region and the Knoxville area.

This exhibition shows the diversity of the mediums and styles that these contemporary artists produce in their creative practices while questioning what it means to be a contemporary hispanic artist in the United 'States.

Pencil Pushed: exploring process and boundaries in drawing.
In this exhibition, the word pencil functions simply as a metaphor or symbol for drawing and its activity. The artists selected are known for their drawing or drawing activity as their primary means of expression and have either pushed the material, process, or boundary of conventional drawing. Media included will be video, sculpture, animation, installation, and of course, works on paper. This exhibition is neither a survey nor the definitive grouping of mark-making artists. It is more a conversation about artists who have and continue to explore these regions in drawing. The diversity of the exhibition will favor mid-career artists, but will range from emerging to late.
