January 19 - May 12 "Zoom Into Nano" traveling exhibition offers a hands-on, interactive experience on how scientists see and make things that are too small to see. Nanoscale science and engineering is the process through which materials are manipulated on the molecular scale to generate very, very small structures and devices. Exhibit activities include a magnification station, particle progression, shrink a pattern, atom transporter, shaking solids, infinity crystal, carbon nanotubes, stretch a molecule dissolve a crystal and more. The American Museum of Science and Energy, located at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge, is open Monday - Saturday from 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday 1 - 5 pm. AMSE admission is Adults $5, Seniors (65+) $4, Students (6 - 17) $3, Children (5 and under) no charge. AMSE members are free.

UT Violin Festival Presents Two Free Concerts

Guest artist Professor Ilya Kaler, from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago, will perform a violin and piano recital with UT School of Music's Kevin Class. Kaler is one of the most outstanding personalities of the violin today. His recordings of the Paganini Caprices have been deemed by American Record Guide to be "in a class by themselves" combining "the perfection, passion, and phrase sculpting of Michael Rabin with the energy, excitement, and immediacy of Jascha Heifetz." Among his many awards are 1st Prizes and Gold Medals at the Tchaikovsky (1986), the Sibelius (1985) and the Paganini (1981) Competitions.

Marble Springs Historic Site: Candle Making Workshop

Candle Making Workshop at Marble Springs Historic Site

Marble Springs Historic Site will host a Candle Making Workshop Saturday, January 19 starting at 11 a.m. (A snow date of Saturday, January 26th has been set in case of inclement weather on the 19th). This hands-on workshop will teach visitors about lighting sources of the 18th and 19th-centuries. Visitors will learn how to make beeswax candles by the open hearth. Reservations are required and space is limited to twenty participants. Details are subject to change.

Fee: $10 for cost of materials.

All activities take place at the Marble Springs State Historic Site: 1220 West Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.

Jubilee Community Arts: Dale Ann Bradley

"I grew up in a tar and paper covered shack right near Loretta Lynn's childhood home," reflects Dale Ann Bradley on her origin in the hills of east Kentucky as a hardscrabble preacher's daughter. In the late 1980s she began performing as a solo artist at Renfro Valley then joined up with the New Coon Creek Girls in the early 1990s, performing on the group's 1994 album The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore. Her first solo album, East Kentucky Morning, came in 1997. Since then she has released seven albums with her latest Somewhere South of Crazy released in 2011. Along the way Dale Ann received five IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year awards, the latest in 2012.

The Historic Ramsey House will be hosting a free presentation by the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable: The role of Knoxville in the Civil War: What civilian life was like in a city of divided loyalties from 1861 to 1865, including the role of the Ramsey Family during that time. .

The presenter is Dennis Urban, Vice President of the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable.

"We Shall Overcome" is a 90 minute presentation that addresses current issues of apathy and misinformation regarding the Civil Right Movement. The story follows a classroom of multicultural youth who have little appreciation for the sacrifices and tireless work of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and the many unsung heroes of the struggle for equality.

This event has multiple performances.

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra POPS Series: A Musical Tribute to John Lennon and Paul McCartney

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra POPS Series continues on January 19, 2013 with a special performance featuring two guest musicians/vocalists along with the KSO. Conducted by KSO Resident Conductor James Fellenbaum, the musical tribute to John Lennon & Paul McCartney will include classics such as Imagine, Yesterday, Let It Be, Across the Universe, Jet, Live and Let Die, All You Need is Love, and many more. The concert is sponsored by Regal Entertainment Group and will take place on Saturday, January 19 at 8:00 PM at the Civic Auditorium.
From the creator of the sensational "Classical Mystery Tour" comes a new tribute to the genius of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, two of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. They wrote some of the most instantly recognizable songs in the history of popular music, many of which were recorded with in-studio orchestras. The show presents songs penned by the dynamic songwriting duo as well as material from their solo years, all performed exactly as they were originally recorded with original cast members of “Beatlemania.”
