WDVX World Class Bluegrass Show

East Tennessee’s Own award winning Americana station, WDVX proudly joins The Knoxville Americana Music Foundation to launch an exciting, new, quarterly concert series aptly named, “WDVX World Class Bluegrass Show”.

The inaugural event will take place on Saturday, January 26th 2013 at Knoxville’s acoustically incomparable Bijou Theatre. Doors will be open to the public at 6:30 p.m. and the fast paced, multi artist showcase will commence at 7:30 p.m.

WDVX will record the live performances from the series and re broadcast them on WDVX 89.9, 102.9 and on the web at WDVX.com.

Jubilee Community Arts: Jamie Laval

Jamie will present a program of traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, Bretagne, Galicea, Quebec, and Appalachia. Winner of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship (2002), Laval has appeared on the NBC Today Show, has performed for Her Majesty the Queen, and won Best World Traditional Song in the 2007 Independent Music Awards Vox Populi. His recent tour of Scotland found him performing at the Scots Fiddle Festival in Edinburgh and teaching at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His third album, Murmurs and Drones, was released last year.

Tickets (if available) will also be sold at the door the night of the event for $16.

In an emergency effort to raise $3,000 to have our main heating system repaired, we are holding the following fundraising event, a tasting party using the recipes from the FCAC Recipe Book that came out in December:

UT Downtown Gallery: "Northern Exposure", a Group Exhibition from the UTK School of Art

The UT Downtown Gallery presents a group exhibition: Northern Exposure. The exhibition includes paintings, photography and sculpture from six UTK students that recently traveled together to Boston, New York and Washington, DC and then created works of art in response to those experiences.
The exhibit will run from January 23 through January 26.
Join us for an Artists Reception; January 25 from 6pm until 9pm, admission is free.

January 19 - May 12 "Zoom Into Nano" traveling exhibition offers a hands-on, interactive experience on how scientists see and make things that are too small to see. Nanoscale science and engineering is the process through which materials are manipulated on the molecular scale to generate very, very small structures and devices. Exhibit activities include a magnification station, particle progression, shrink a pattern, atom transporter, shaking solids, infinity crystal, carbon nanotubes, stretch a molecule dissolve a crystal and more. The American Museum of Science and Energy, located at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge, is open Monday - Saturday from 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday 1 - 5 pm. AMSE admission is Adults $5, Seniors (65+) $4, Students (6 - 17) $3, Children (5 and under) no charge. AMSE members are free.

McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture: Treasures of the Turkomen Tribes from Central Asia

Elaborate silver and gilt jewelry, as well as carpets and textiles from the Turkomen tribes of Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan are the focus of the current exhibition. The Turkomen are one of the major ethnic groups of Central Asia who traditionally lived a semi nomadic existence, migrating with the seasons to access pasture and fertile land. Both jewelry and textiles were forms of transportable wealth that often served as markers of social position. While tribal lands and traditions have changed and evolved, Turkomen peoples continue to play an important role in the culture of Central Asia.

Ewing Gallery: Michael Zansky

Please join us for a reception for Michael Zansky: of Giants & Dwarfs on Thursday January 24th from 7-9pm in the Ewing Gallery. Mr. Zansky will be present at the reception for informal discussion and questions about the work. of Giants &Dwarfs opens this week and is on exhibition through February 26.

The Ewing Gallery is excited to present recent works by Michael Zansky. His paintings, drawings, and installation work will be on display at the Ewing Gallery from January 17 - February 26, 2013. We will host an opening reception for the exhibition on the evening of Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 7-9pm at the Ewing Gallery. The artist will be present.

American Museum of Science and Energy: Homeschool Friday Programs

It's time for parents to register their students for 2013 Homeschool Friday Programs offered two times a month for Grades K-2 and Grades 3-6 at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge. Topics for the interactive programs are the same for each of the specific groups; however, the class time varies as does the cost for the Homeschool Friday Programs. The K-2 classes meet at 10:30 am for one hour with cost of $7 for non-members and $5 for AMSE members. The Grade 3 - 6 classes begin at 12:30 pm and continue for two hours with the cost of $12 for non-members and $9 for AMSE members. May 10 HOMESCHOOL FRIDAY PROGRAM features "Geology" for Grades K-2 at 10:30 am for one hour with cost of $7 for non-members and $5 for AMSE members. Students will learn about the layers of the earth, their composition, depth, temperatures, and their relation to minerals. May 24 HOMESCHOOL FRIDAY PROGRAM features "Trees" at Freels Bend Cabin in Oak Ridge for Grades K-2 at 10:30 am for one hour with cost of $7 for non-members and $5 for AMSE members. Grades 3-6 at 12:30 pm for two hours with the cost of $12 for non-members and $9 for AMSE members. Which trees are used to make baseball bats, pencils and Popsicle sticks? Learn about the trees of East Tennessee and how they are used in our lives. Students will learn how to measure a tree's height and diameter in this outdoor class.
