THREE ON A STRING - Sunday January 20, 2013 at 4pm

THREE ON A STRING performs all kinds of music - classic old standards, country, bluegrass, and folk mixed with comedy and humor suitable for the entire family. Jerry Ryan, Bobby Horton & Brad Ryan have been having a good time right along with their audiences all over the country for over 40 years. Where ever they appear, whether at a convention, music festival, or a symphony pops concert, they always pack the house. THREE ON A STRING's show has evolved into a well timed, musically interesting and funny presentation. Their three-part harmony has a unique and pleasing blend, from a heart-rending country song to an unexpected a cappella rendition.

The Second Series of performances will take place at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center located at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Oak Ridge High School Wildband whose boosters will also be helping patrons at the shows. January 19 - May 12 "Zoom Into Nano" traveling exhibition offers a hands-on, interactive experience on how scientists see and make things that are too small to see. Nanoscale science and engineering is the process through which materials are manipulated on the molecular scale to generate very, very small structures and devices. Exhibit activities include a magnification station, particle progression, shrink a pattern, atom transporter, shaking solids, infinity crystal, carbon nanotubes, stretch a molecule dissolve a crystal and more. The American Museum of Science and Energy, located at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge, is open Monday - Saturday from 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday 1 - 5 pm. AMSE admission is Adults $5, Seniors (65+) $4, Students (6 - 17) $3, Children (5 and under) no charge. AMSE members are free.

Guest artist Professor Ilya Kaler, from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago, will perform a violin and piano recital with UT School of Music's Kevin Class. Kaler is one of the most outstanding personalities of the violin today. His recordings of the Paganini Caprices have been deemed by American Record Guide to be "in a class by themselves" combining "the perfection, passion, and phrase sculpting of Michael Rabin with the energy, excitement, and immediacy of Jascha Heifetz." Among his many awards are 1st Prizes and Gold Medals at the Tchaikovsky (1986), the Sibelius (1985) and the Paganini (1981) Competitions.

Elaborate silver and gilt jewelry, as well as carpets and textiles from the Turkomen tribes of Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan are the focus of the current exhibition. The Turkomen are one of the major ethnic groups of Central Asia who traditionally lived a semi nomadic existence, migrating with the seasons to access pasture and fertile land. Both jewelry and textiles were forms of transportable wealth that often served as markers of social position. While tribal lands and traditions have changed and evolved, Turkomen peoples continue to play an important role in the culture of Central Asia.

Mr. Zansky will be present at the reception for informal discussion and questions about the work. of Giants &Dwarfs opens this week and is on exhibition through February 26.

The Ewing Gallery is excited to present recent works by Michael Zansky. His paintings, drawings, and installation work will be on display at the Ewing Gallery from January 17 - February 26, 2013. We will host an opening reception for the exhibition on the evening of Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 7-9pm at the Ewing Gallery. The artist will be present.

It's time for parents to register their students for 2013 Homeschool Friday Programs offered two times a month for Grades K-2 and Grades 3-6 at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge. Topics for the interactive programs are the same for each of the specific groups; however, the class time varies as does the cost for the Homeschool Friday Programs. The K-2 classes meet at 10:30 am for one hour with cost of $7 for non-members and $5 for AMSE members. The Grade 3 - 6 classes begin at 12:30 pm and continue for two hours with the cost of $12 for non-members and $9 for AMSE members. Students will learn about the layers of the earth, their composition, depth, temperatures, and their relation to minerals. May 24 HOMESCHOOL FRIDAY PROGRAM features "Trees" at Freels Bend Cabin in Oak Ridge for Grades K-2 at 10:30 am for one hour with cost of $7 for non-members and $5 for AMSE members. Grades 3-6 at 12:30 pm for two hours with the cost of $12 for non-members and $9 for AMSE members. Which trees are used to make baseball bats, pencils and Popsicle sticks? Learn about the trees of East Tennessee and how they are used in our lives. Students will learn how to measure a tree's height and diameter in this outdoor class. We are so excited and honored to host an exhibit of works by 30 members of the Foothills Craft Guild here at the Fountain City Art Center. Works by our own FCAC membership, Bob Meadows and Jim Gentry, will be featured in the show, too! Everyone is invited to attend the opening reception for the show on Friday, January 11, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM. If you have never been to a Foothills show or sale, you are in for quite a treat! The exhibit will be on display through February 7. Artwork by students from the Karns area schools will also be featured in “Student Exhibits” during this time.
