Knoxville Jazz Orchestra: Incredible Jazz Vibes

With vibraphonist Warren Wolf at the Square Room

January’s Square Room concert promises to be a “you have to see it to believe it” experience. Although the vibraphone may not be the world’s most identifiable instrument, in the hands of young master Warren Wolf it is absolutely electrifying. Wolf’s musical education began in earnest at the age of three. His father made sure that he practiced daily on the vibraphone, piano and drum set and introduced him to an array of styles including classical, jazz and pop. No wonder he is one of today’s most sought-after young musicians. His resume features performances and globetrotting tours with the likes of Christian McBride, Bobby Watson and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Sure to be a rollicking good time!

January 28: Jonathan Byrd Band + The Stray Birds
Jonathan Byrd is a storyteller who borders on hypnotist. He’s that compelling. And he comes by it naturally. He’s a preacher’s son, and a seventh generation Carolinian. He’s also not on Twitter because, as anyone who follows him on Facebook knows, you can’t keep this man to 140 characters. His latest solo CD is “Cackalack” and he just released a duo album with Chris Kokesh called "The Barn Birds.”
Three-part harmony is the name of the game with The Stray Birds. This Pennsylvania-based trio with classically trained chops approaches traditional mountain music with a reverent and refreshing ear. NPR Music named the band’s self-titled debut album one of the best of the year alongside Iris DeMent, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Lumineers.

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and History, heritage

Elaborate silver and gilt jewelry, as well as carpets and textiles from the Turkomen tribes of Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan are the focus of the current exhibition. The Turkomen are one of the major ethnic groups of Central Asia who traditionally lived a semi nomadic existence, migrating with the seasons to access pasture and fertile land. Both jewelry and textiles were forms of transportable wealth that often served as markers of social position. While tribal lands and traditions have changed and evolved, Turkomen peoples continue to play an important role in the culture of Central Asia.

Hours are Monday-Saturday 9:00AM-5:00PM and Sunday 1:00-5:00PM. Admission is free. McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture, 1327 Circle Park Drive, Knoxville, 37996. 865-974-2144 or mcclungmuseum.utk.edu.
