Wild Thyme Players: "The Lieutenant of Inishmore"

5924.jpg
  • March 15, 2013 — March 17, 2013
  • March 15 & 16, 8PM, March 17, 3PM

Category: Theatre

The Wild Thyme Players present ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’ during St. Patrick's Day weekend at Relix Variety Theatre in Old North Knoxville. Performances run Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16 at 8:00 PM, and Sunday, March 17 at 3:00 PM.

This fiercely dark comedy by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh exploits nationalist terrorism and gun violence to ludicrous extremes, expertly blending absurdity with cringe-inducing brutality.

'Inishmore' tells the story of Mad Padraic ("Patrick") - a man so violent he was even refused membership in the IRA - and his beloved cat, Wee Thomas. While Padraic is running amok in Northern Ireland, bombing chip shops and torturing drug dealers in the name of Irish sovereignty, he receives news that Wee Thomas has fallen ill. When he rushes home to discover the cat was in fact killed, Padraic's patriotic fervor quickly turns to murderous rage, and he vows to exact bloody revenge for his furry friend.

"McDonagh's play challenges us to look at the real motivations behind terrorism, which often have more to do with ignorance, domination and vengeance than any lofty stated goals of liberation and justice," says the play's director, Carolyn Corley. She adds that the play offers uniquely Irish comic insight into America's obsession with guns and violence.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Students, seniors and military are $10 at the door. Due to the graphic nature of this play, parental discretion is advised. For information call 325-9877 or email director@wildthymeplayers.org.
