Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts: Artist in Residence Exhbition

As their time at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts draws to a close, artists Heather Ashworth, Jason Burnett, Erin Castellan, Ashley Gilreath and David Katz share a collection of new work developed during their 11-month stay on campus.
The Annual Artists-in-Residence Exhibition opens with a gallery reception on Saturday, March 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Blain Galleries. The exhibition will be on display from March 9 through May 4, and both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. This year’s Residents will exhibit works that include functional wood furniture, whimsical pottery, ceramic installations, embroidered paintings, metalsmithing and enameling.

Saturday, March 9
9:30 a.m. HIKE-A-THON: Keyhole Journey for Kids with Sabrina. This is an adventurous hike to the Ross Marble Keyhole, exploring unique and beautiful landscapes. Open to all ages.
1 p.m. HIKE-A-THON: Ijams Trails with Darin' Erin. WBIR's Darin' Erin Donovan has requested that participants come clad in their favorite zombie or superhero costume for this fun hike. Open to all ages.
6 p.m. Ijams Birding Series: Woodcock Walk. Come see the elaborate courtship displays of the American woodcock during this guided hike by naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales. To attract a female, the male woodcock shows off a combination of squawks, twitters, and aerial acrobatics. We'll meet at Ijams Nature Center, then caravan to Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area. The fee for this program is $5 for members and $8 for non-members. Noon: HIKE-A-THON: Music Melodies Hike with Red WDVK's Red Hickey is one of Knoxville's most colorful radio personalities. Join this fascinating honky tonk gal as she rambles her cowboy boots around Ijams. Open to all ages.
Monday, March 11
10 a.m. HIKE-A-THON: Discovery Hike at Ijams with Samantha. Lace up your hiking boots and discover the wonders of wildflowers, animals, and trees at Ijams Nature Center. Open to all ages.
4 p.m.: Nature Fun Station. Join us each Monday afternoon for a different Nature Fun Station. You never know what kind of outdoor fun we'll be digging up each week. These programs are FREE and no registration is required.

10am: HIKE-A-THON: Wonders of Birding Hike with Lee. If you ever wanted to know about what birds are in your yard or just migrating through, this hike is for you. Open to all ages.
Wednesday, March 13
1 p.m. HIKE-A-THON: River Boardwalk Hike with Sabrina. Located barely a mile downstream from the birth of the Tennessee River, the extensive boardwalk has long been a visitor favorite. Open to all ages.
Thursday, March 14
10 a.m. HIKE-A-THON: Wonders of Birding Hike with Lee. If you ever wanted to know about what birds are in your yard or just migrating through, this hike is for you. Open to all ages.
10 a.m. HIKE-A-THON: Little Tykes Hike with Sarah. Bring your little ones out to explore, dig, run and play. Each week has a different theme. Recommended for families with children aged 2-5.
4 p.m. Backyard Birds FeederWatch. Project FeederWatch is a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. FeederWatch data help scientists track bird populations. Join us each Thursday in March as we visit the feeders around Ijams Nature Center to identify and count the visiting bird species. At the end, we'll submit our bird counts to help with this research project. This program is FREE and registration is not required.

10 a.m. HIKE-A-THON: Wetland Hike with Lee. Join Lee Bryant as she takes you around the Lotus pond and wetland created by the Ijams Family over 75 years ago. Open to all ages.

Told with warmth and wit, this is more than just the story of a girl and her hair. When a man his wife, longing for a child, make a harsh bargain with a witch, the child is taken away by the enchantress to live locked in a tall tower. Is her only escape to one day be hopefully rescued by a prince? This production is suitable for General Audiences. No children under age 3 admitted.

The East Tennessee office of the American Diabetes Association is hosting their eleventh annual Diabetes NOW conference on Saturday, March 9 at the Holiday Inn at Worlds Fair Park from 8:00am-3:00pm Diabetes NOW is an all-day, educational conference and diabetes expo with local experts and health and wellness vendors from throughout the community.
This year’s event is at the Holiday Inn at Worlds Fair Park, and will be host to more than 40 vendors and hundreds of attendees. Many vendors will be offering health screenings at free or reduced costs, including free BMI screenings, a kidney health screening, A1C testing, blood glucose and blood pressure screening, monofilament foot screenings, and more.
Tickets are limited, but are free to those who RSVP by March 1 while supplies last. Anyone wanting to attend the 2013 Diabetes NOW conference on March 9 should call the local American Diabetes Association office at (865) 524-7868 extension 3341 to receive their ticket.

Marble Springs State Historic Site: Open Hearth Cooking Workshop

Marble Springs State Historic Site, a Tennessee Historical Commission State-Owned Historic Site, will host an Open Hearth Cooking Workshop Saturday, March 9 starting at 10:00am. This hands-on workshop will teach visitors about open hearth cooking methods of the 18th and 19th-centuries. Participants will be broken into teams that will create different portions of the meal to be served at the conclusion of the workshop. This workshop is limited to 10 participants – a waiting list will be established, if necessary.
Reservations are required and must be made by Friday, March 1, 2013 at 5pm.
Fee: $15 per person; $10 for GJSMA members. Please mail payment to P.O. Box 20195, Knoxville, TN 37940 or drop off at Marble Springs during open hours by March 1. Parking is free.

The WordPlayers: The God Committee

Who lives? Who dies? Who decides? In this timely, provocative drama by Mark St. Germain, medicine, money and morality clash when the Transplant Selection Committee of St. Patrick's Hospital has only minutes to decide which of three patients will receive a heart that has suddenly come available. "The God Committee" takes us into the inner workings of a Transplant Program and a decision which, for both the candidates and the program, is a matter of life and death. (Recommended for ages 15+)
Performances are March 8, 9, 14, 15, 16 @ 7:30 pm and March 10 & 17 @ 2:30 pm. Tickets are $8-$12 and may be purchased online or at the door with cash or check. Thursday, March 14 is Pay What You Can Night. A discussion will follow the matinee on March 10.

Jubilee Community Arts: 44th Jubilee Festival

Jubilee Community Arts presents the 44th Jubilee Festival Friday through Sunday, March 8-10 at at the Laurel Theater.
Jubilee Community Arts presents its signature celebration of traditional mountain music featuring Tennessee artists recognized as accomplished masters of old styles of fiddle, banjo, string bands, sacred music and early country and historical ballads, culminating in the annual Epworth Old Harp Singing.
This year's event features a ballad set by former Knoxvillian Daron Douglas, great granddaughter of Jane Hicks Gentry, high energy old time sets from youngbloods Check Engine and Possum Riot, and the soulful and powerful voice of East Tennessee's Leah Gardner as well as old masters and other outstanding performers familiar to the festival.
We welcome and anticipate basement sessions all evening Friday and Saturday.
Evening concerts begin 7 pm Friday and Saturday.
Old Harp Singing and potluck at 10 am - 3 pm Sunday.
