Athens Area Council for the Arts: Jake Shimabukuro
Category: Music
Jake Shimabukuro on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 7:30PM. Ukelele! Yes, we said ukelele-played like never before! It's rare for a young musician to earn comparisons to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis-but Jake Shimabukuro has molded this traditional Hawaiian instrument into a complex and bold musical force. Effortlessly mixing jazz, rock, classical, traditional, and folk, Jake creates a sound that's both technically masterful and emotionally powerful.
Adults $20, Students $10.

Athens Area Council for the Arts: Jake Shimabukuro
Category: Music
The final performance in the Athens Area Council for the Arts’ Big Time/Small Town Performance Series is by ukulele sensation JAKE SHIMABUKURO at the Athens City Middle School, Athens, Tennessee. Hawaiian born Jake Shimabukuro is taking the music scene by storm – and the ukulele to places where no one has gone before. Earning comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, Jake Shimabukuro has stretched and molded this traditional Hawaiian instrument into a complex and bold musical force. On his most recent album ‘Peace Love Ukulele’ (which debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Album Chart), Jake and his “uke†seem to effortlessly mix jazz, rock, classical, traditional Hawaiian music, and folk, creating a sound that is technically masterful, emotionally powerful, and utterly unique in the music world. The New York Times recently noted his “buoyant musicianship†and “brisk proficiency,†adding, “the innovation in his style stems from an embrace of restrictions: the ukulele has only four strings and a limited range. He compensates with an adaptable combination of rhythmic strumming, classical-style finger-picking and fretboard tapping.†Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam who recently released his own album of ukulele songs had this to say about Jake: “Jake is taking the instrument to a place that I can’t see anybody else catching up with him.â€
Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults ($18 in advance), $10 for students and are available in advance by phone at (423)745-8781, on line at www.athensartscouncil.org, or at The Arts Center, 320 North White St. in downtown Athens. Tickets will be sold at the door as available. Directions to the Athens City Middle School, 200 Keith Lane, may also be found at the website.
