GO! Contemporary Dance Works: Unsung Heroes: Women of World War II

GO! Contemporary Dance Works presents Unsung Heroes: Women of World War II. An original full-length contemporary ballet with live music performed by the Samuel Williams Quintet. This performance will focus on women during WWII, their roles, struggles, victories and losses. GO’s audience will encounter the WACs, WAVES, and WASPs, as well as Rosie the Riveter, Anne Frank and Josephine Baker.

Performances will be Saturday, February 9th at 8pm and Sunday, February 10th at 2pm at the Bijou Theatre. Advanced reserved seating tickets are $22 for general public and $17 for students and seniors and $27/$22 at the door. Alan Safier stars in Say Goodnight Gracie, the hit Broadway play that invites you to spend a hilarious, heart-warming evening in the uplifting company of the world’s favorite and funniest centenarian, George Burns, who spanned over 90 years of American entertainment history, is now alive and kicking — and singing and dancing! — in a stunning tour de force solo performance for Alan Safier. With vintage photographs and video clips from film and television performances, "Say Goodnight Gracie" brings to life Burns's fascinating story.

Blount County Public Library: 10th Harp Ensemble Valentine’s Concert

Harp music is sometimes described as the heavenly music of angels. The opportunity to hear a concert of multiple harps and harpists gives local residents the chance to encounter a heavenly host.
For the tenth year, you are invited to a Harp Ensemble Valentine’s Concert at the Blount County Public Library. The performance will be on Saturday, February 9, at 2 p.m. William Lovelace, former national presidential of the American Harp Society, will direct the concert and is the instructor for the harpists.
A unique event anywhere in the world, this concert will be a special privilege for Blount County area residents to enjoy a concert of seven harps and harpists.
Plan a Valentine’s date with that special someone to enjoy a heavenly harp concert at the library.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

Runaway Shelter of Child and Family Services: Project Runway Fashion Show

Knoxville fashionistas are invited to join us on Saturday, Febuary 9, to support the program to assist the Runaway Shelter of Child and Family Services.

Project Runaway, a fashion show to benefit at-risk youth, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Foundry, with local designers presenting their thrift store recreations. Prior to designing their recreations, each of the designers participated in a preliminary shopping trip to choose two clothing items from an area KARM Thrift Store. Then, they were asked to deconstruct the clothing items and recreate them into a fashionable outfit to present on the runway.

In addition, local boutiques will present their newest collections on the runway. These items will be available for purchase from the boutiques’ booths that will be set up throughout the Foundry. Event goers will also be treated to a performance by local Americana/folk band Guy Marshall and free hors d’oeuvres. A cash bar will be available throughout the event. Tickets are $25; student tickets are available for $10 (a valid student ID is required). All of the funds raised will benefit Child & Family Tennessee’s Runaway Shelter.

Additional partners for the event include Children’s Hospital, Morris Creative Group and the University of Tennessee’s sororities.

Pellissippi State Community College: Work by Artist Tom Lee

Although his home and studio are in Coldwater, Miss., artist Tom Lee is known throughout the South and across the nation for his “lessons of the truth of absurdity.” Pellissippi State Community College hosts a collection of Lee’s work at an exhibit scheduled Feb. 8-March 1.

“It’s What You Get….” kicks off on the 8th with an opening reception honoring the artist. Reception hours are 3-5 p.m. The reception and exhibit, both of which are free and open to the community, take place in the gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art on the Hardin Valley Campus. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

Clayton Center for the Arts presents Hamlet by William Shakespeare as the Second in 2012-2013 Theatre Series.

On February 8 and 9 at 8 pm, the play considered by many to be the greatest play of all time will be presented in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre at the Clayton Center for the Arts. The Clayton Center, in its third of a series of plays produced by the theatre, will produce the play for schools at 10 a.m. February 7 in addition to the public performances on February 8 & 9.

The Art Market Gallery of Knoxville will feature an exhibit of recent works by two artists recently juried into the gallery, Kory Kiker and Katie White.

A First Friday opening reception for the exhibit is planned for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, with complimentary refreshments and live music: jazz, soul and fusion performed by saxophonist Marquis McGee.

Member owned and operated by more than 60 regional artists, the Art Market Gallery is located at 422 South Gay St., next to the Downtown Grill & Brewery, and a few doors down from Mast General Store.
