The Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association presents its Winter Concert featuring four of the five orchestras of the KSYOA. This concert, sponsored by the Charlie and Moll Anderson Family Foundation, will take place on Monday, February 18 at 7:00 PM at the Tennessee Theatre. This concert is FREE and open to the public.

Four of the five Orchestras of the KSYOA include: theYouth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Wesley Baldwin; the Sinfonia Orchestra, conducted by Kathy Hart-Reilly; the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Katie Hutchinson and the Preludium Orchestra, conducted by Erin Archer. These are the beginning and intermediate orchestras of the KSYOA. The Sinfonia Orchestra will be joined by members of the West Valley Middle School Band to create a full orchestra for this performance.

East Tennessee Historical Society and Friends of the Knox County Public Library are proud to present A Presidential Conversation with Jon Meacham at 7:30 p.m., President’s Day, February 18, 2013, at the Historic Bijou Theatre. The Honorable Bill Haslam, Governor of Tennessee, and a history buff in his own right, will deliver the introduction.

A native son of Tennessee, Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of four books and many essays. He is a former co-anchor of the public-affairs broadcast Need to Know on PBS and former editor of Newsweek. In honor of President’s Day and the upcoming exhibit on the War of 1812 at the Museum of East Tennessee History, the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Friends of the Knox County Public Library are pleased to present this important event.

February 18: Dylan Sneed and Casey Driessen

There must be something in the water. In Texas, they're growing sharp-as-a-whip songwriters in the tradition of Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, and young Dylan Sneed fits right in that line. Although he has many miles to go before racking up their time on the road, Sneed has entertained many listeners since packing up his stuff in Dallas and moving to smalltown Hartsville, S.C. in 2008. Witty, heartfelt songs reminiscent of Scott Miller.

Casey Driessen: With limitless energy and spontaneity, The Casey Driessen Singularity puts his unique creative vision center stage. The set up is simple: One man. One fiddle. One pedal board. Mixing his signature percussive fiddle style with digital loops and effects, the GRAMMY-nominated fiddler will build each show layer by layer in real time in front of the audience. The result is a one of a kind experience that pushes the boundaries of musical genres and styles.

Tennessee Shines is a weekly radio show on WDVX FM hosted by Bob Deck and Paige Travis on the stage of the Knoxville Visitor Center Mondays at 7pm and broadcast live on WDVX FM and WDVX.com. Tickets are $10, free for students with valid ID and children ages 14 and under. Tickets are available in advance at the WDVX Blue Plate Special, noon weekdays and Saturdays at the Knoxville Visitor Center, or at the door beginning at 6 p.m. on the night of the show.

The Fountain City Art Center’s theme exhibit, “Reflection,” will run from February 15 – March 28, 2013.
Fountain City Art Center is located in the old library building at 213 Hotel Avenue next to the Fountain City Park.

Public viewing hours are Tuesday and Thursday 9-5; Wednesday and Friday 10-5; and Saturdays 9-1.

Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present a live stage version of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty for children and families from February 15 to March 2. KCT’s version adheres to all the basic elements of the classic bedtime story: romance, intrigue, and ancient magic. But our new adaptation re-imagines various elements to include humor, suspense, and drama, all set amid the backdrop of the French Revolution. Dreams become reality in KCT’s Sleeping Beauty.

Although his home and studio are in Coldwater, Miss., artist Tom Lee is known throughout the South and across the nation for his “lessons of the truth of absurdity.” Pellissippi State Community College hosts a collection of Lee’s work at an exhibit scheduled Feb. 8-March 1.

“It’s What You Get….” kicks off on the 8th with an opening reception honoring the artist. Reception hours are 3-5 p.m. The reception and exhibit, both of which are free and open to the community, take place in the gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art on the Hardin Valley Campus. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

February 1 - July 28 "JAPAN 1945: IMAGES BY U.S. MARINE PHOTOGRAPHER JOE O'DONNELL" is a traveling exhibition organized by the Tennessee State Museum that showcases 22 of the most compelling images to document the aftermath of U.S. bombing raids on the Japanese cities struck by the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Art Market Gallery of Knoxville will feature an exhibit of recent works by two artists recently juried into the gallery, Kory Kiker and Katie White.

A First Friday opening reception for the exhibit is planned for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, with complimentary refreshments and live music: jazz, soul and fusion performed by saxophonist Marquis McGee.

The UT Downtown Gallery is pleased to present and installation by Chad Curtis. Chad D. Curtis is an artist and technologist living and working in Philadelphia. Drawing inspiration from both digital technology and homebrew DIY makers, Curtis's work examines the abstraction of materiality in the digital age and the effects of high technology on the relationship between human beings and the natural environment.

Chad Curtis will be giving a public lecture on his work at 7:30pm in room 109 of the Art and Architecture building on Thursday January 31st. There is a basketball game on campus that evening. Parking Services will be selling off the lots until game tip-off shortly after 7pm. If you are planning on parking in the lot behind the A+A building, please plan to arrive no earlier than 5-10 minutes before the lecture begins to avoid paying to park.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present its National Juried Exhibition of 2013, a new exhibition featuring selected works from 24 artists in the Southeast region. The National Juried Exhibition was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for local artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists and will be displayed in the Emporium Center from February 1-22, 2013. A public reception will take place on Friday, February 1, from 5:00-9:00 PM with a brief awards ceremony at 6:00 PM in which $1,000 in cash awards will be announced.

Jane Nickels (Knoxville) – Acrylic on canvas, abstract in nature with an emphasis on pattern and visual connections/relationships.
