February 11: The Lonetones + Matt Duncan
Times they are a’changing for Knoxville band The Lonetones. Led by married songwriters Sean McCollough and Steph Gunnoe, the band has turned a corner from straight-up folky to progressive indie-folks-rock with its brand new CD, Modern Victims. In contemporary (and quirky) arrangements, the latest batch of songs address prescient issues with heart and soul: mountain-top removal coal mining in “Stirring Up the Dust”; the pain of losing a friend in “Top Hat”; parenting in “Unprepared.” Sean and Steph will be joined on Tennessee Shines by Cecilia Miller on cello, Maria Williams on bass and vocals, and Stephen Corrigan on drums.

Tennessee Shines is a weekly radio show on WDVX FM hosted by Bob Deck and Paige Travis on the stage of the Knoxville Visitor Center Mondays at 7pm and broadcast live on WDVX FM and WDVX.com. Tickets are $10, free for students with valid ID and children ages 14 and under. Tickets are available in advance at the WDVX Blue Plate Special, noon weekdays and Saturdays at the Knoxville Visitor Center, or at the door beginning at 6 p.m. on the night of the show.

Although his home and studio are in Coldwater, Miss., artist Tom Lee is known throughout the South and across the nation for his “lessons of the truth of absurdity.” Pellissippi State Community College hosts a collection of Lee’s work at an exhibit scheduled Feb. 8-March 1.

“It’s What You Get….” kicks off on the 8th with an opening reception honoring the artist. Reception hours are 3-5 p.m. The reception and exhibit, both of which are free and open to the community, take place in the gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art on the Hardin Valley Campus. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

February 1 - July 28 "JAPAN 1945: IMAGES BY U.S. MARINE PHOTOGRAPHER JOE O'DONNELL" is a traveling exhibition organized by the Tennessee State Museum that showcases 22 of the most compelling images to document the aftermath of U.S. bombing raids on the Japanese cities struck by the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Artifacts and explanatory panels complete the exhibition. AMSE Lobby.

The Art Market Gallery of Knoxville will feature an exhibit of recent works by two artists recently juried into the gallery, Kory Kiker and Katie White.

A First Friday opening reception for the exhibit is planned for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, with complimentary refreshments and live music: jazz, soul and fusion performed by saxophonist Marquis McGee.

The UT Downtown Gallery is pleased to present and installation by Chad Curtis. Chad D. Curtis is an artist and technologist living and working in Philadelphia. Drawing inspiration from both digital technology and homebrew DIY makers, Curtis's work examines the abstraction of materiality in the digital age and the effects of high technology on the relationship between human beings and the natural environment.

Chad Curtis will be giving a public lecture on his work at 7:30pm in room 109 of the Art and Architecture building on Thursday January 31st. There is a basketball game on campus that evening. Parking Services will be selling off the lots until game tip-off shortly after 7pm. If you are planning on parking in the lot behind the A+A building, please plan to arrive no earlier than 5-10 minutes before the lecture begins to avoid paying to park.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present its National Juried Exhibition of 2013, a new exhibition featuring selected works from 24 artists in the Southeast region. The National Juried Exhibition was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for local artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists and will be displayed in the Emporium Center from February 1-22, 2013. A public reception will take place on Friday, February 1, from 5:00-9:00 PM with a brief awards ceremony at 6:00 PM in which $1,000 in cash awards will be announced.

Red takes you into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and chronicles his two-year struggle to complete the largest and most lucrative commission in the history of modern art – a set of dark red murals for Manhattan’s exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. As Rothko’s young assistant gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the possibility that his crowning achievement as an artist might also be his artistic undoing. Set during the changing cultural landscape of the early 1960s, John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play is a snapshot of a brilliant artist at the height of his fame. John Logan’s acclaimed Tony Award-winning drama “Red” will paint the Carousel Theatre stage January 31 to February 17, 2013. The production is sponsored by the Clayton Foundation with additional support from the Mildred Haines and William Elijah Morris Lecture Endowment Fund. It contains mature language, herbal cigarette smoking and will run approximately 1 ½ hour with no intermission.

Becoming the Volunteer State, a traveling exhibition of the Tennessee State Museum, Nashville will be on display in the East Tennessee History Center from January 28, 2013 through May 19, 2013.

There will be a preview for ETHS members from 2:00-4:00PM, Sunday, January 27, 2013 and a Brown Bag Lecture and Gallery Tour with exhibit curator Myers E. Brown II, at noon at the East Tennessee History Center on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.

Want to learn a new language for the New Year? Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, TN is offering a beginning and an advance beginner Cherokee language class on the following Mondays, January 28, February 4, 11, & 18, from 6:30 – 9 p.m. The cost of the class is $40 for all four evenings. If you have taken the class before with the museum a discount of $5 will be given. The class will be taught by Shirley Oswalt and Mary Brown who are members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indian.
