WDVX: Tennessee Shines with Matt Woods Band and Stephan Simmons
Category: Music
February 4: Matt Woods Band + Stephen Simmons
Although alt-country rocker Matt Woods calls Knoxville home, he spends much of the year driving the nation’s highways from gig to gig at the pubs and dive bars whose vibes, characters and bathroom graffiti seem to inspire his songs. His latest CD, The Matt Woods Manifesto, features captivating tales of good people making bad decisions as told in Woods’ warm, gravelly drawl. “’Johnny Ray Dupree’ could give Cash a run for his money as far as execution songs go." — 1146miles.com.
Nashville singer-songwriter Stephen Simmons is equally familiar with the grungy stages of the Southeast, and he plays them with refreshing sensitivity and a sense of humor. His sixth and latest record, 2011’s The Big Show, was produced by Eric Fritsch (Sheryl Crow, Scott Miller).
Tennessee Shines is a weekly radio show on WDVX FM hosted by Bob Deck and Paige Travis on the stage of the Knoxville Visitor Center Mondays at 7pm and broadcast live on WDVX FM and WDVX.com. Tickets are $10, free for students with valid ID and children ages 14 and under. Clarence Brown Theatre: Red
Category: Theatre
Red takes you into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and chronicles his two-year struggle to complete the largest and most lucrative commission in the history of modern art – a set of dark red murals for Manhattan’s exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. As Rothko’s young assistant gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the possibility that his crowning achievement as an artist might also be his artistic undoing. Set during the changing cultural landscape of the early 1960s, John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play is a snapshot of a brilliant artist at the height of his fame. Red is hailed as “intense and exciting†by The New York Times.
