The Athens Area Council for the Arts’ 34th Big Time/Small Town Season of Performances features world famous performers and some from our own (regional) backyard. All shows will be held at Athens City Middle School, 200 Keith Lane, Athens, Tennessee at 7:30 PM.

In honor of Black History Month, the Fisk University Jubilee SingersTM bring the a cappella spiritual to Athens on Monday, February 3rd. The ensemble, which is comprised entirely of current students at Fisk University, broke racial barriers in the US and abroad when it introduced “slave songs” to the world in 1871. Nearly 150 years later, the singers are preserving the rich, distinctly American music known now as the Negro spiritual.

For the final offering in the season Dan Akroyd, Judy Belushi, and musical director Paul Shaffer present the one and only Official Blues Brothers Revue on Wednesday, March 12. It’s the closest show to the real thing as possible – Wayne Catania and Keiron Lafferty as Jake and Elwood Blues lead the high-energy intercontinental Rhythm & Blues Revue Band in a performance that pays homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, soul music, and gospel in the true spirit of the original Blues BrothersTM.

A family season ticket package (immediate family only) is $150, a couple’s ticket package is $100, and an individual ticket package is $60. February 1 - July 28 "JAPAN 1945: IMAGES BY U.S. MARINE PHOTOGRAPHER JOE O'DONNELL" is a traveling exhibition organized by the Tennessee State Museum that showcases 22 of the most compelling images to document the aftermath of U.S. bombing raids on the Japanese cities struck by the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Artifacts and explanatory panels complete the exhibition. AMSE Lobby.

The Art Market Gallery of Knoxville will feature an exhibit of recent works by two artists recently juried into the gallery, Kory Kiker and Katie White.

A First Friday opening reception for the exhibit is planned for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, with complimentary refreshments and live music: jazz, soul and fusion performed by saxophonist Marquis McGee.

Member owned and operated by more than 60 regional artists, the Art Market Gallery is located at 422 South Gay St., next to the Downtown Grill & Brewery, and a few doors down from Mast General Store. The UT Downtown Gallery is pleased to present and installation by Chad Curtis. Chad D. Curtis is an artist and technologist living and working in Philadelphia. Drawing inspiration from both digital technology and homebrew DIY makers, Curtis's work examines the abstraction of materiality in the digital age and the effects of high technology on the relationship between human beings and the natural environment.

Chad Curtis will be giving a public lecture on his work at 7:30pm in room 109 of the Art and Architecture building on Thursday January 31st. There is a basketball game on campus that evening. Parking Services will be selling off the lots until game tip-off shortly after 7pm. If you are planning on parking in the lot behind the A+A building, please plan to arrive no earlier than 5-10 minutes before the lecture begins to avoid paying to park.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present its National Juried Exhibition of 2013, a new exhibition featuring selected works from 24 artists in the Southeast region. The National Juried Exhibition was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for local artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists and will be displayed in the Emporium Center from February 1-22, 2013. A public reception will take place on Friday, February 1, from 5:00-9:00 PM with a brief awards ceremony at 6:00 PM in which $1,000 in cash awards will be announced.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new group exhibition featuring artwork by six local artists opening Friday, February 1, at 5:00 PM in the Balcony of the Emporium Center:

Jane Nickels (Knoxville) – Acrylic on canvas, abstract in nature with an emphasis on pattern and visual connections/relationships.

The Art Guild of Tellico Village (AGTV) has embraced a theme this year set forth by their President, Laurie Szilvagyi. A select group of artists have taken the challenge to work out of their comfort zones and create artwork aligning with inspiration, innovation, collaboration and exploration. An art exhibit entitled "Beyond the Comfort Zone" will be held at the Rarity Bay Community Center Gallery located at 150 Rarity Bay Parkway, Vonore, Tennessee 37885. The exhibit opens with a reception on Friday, February 1st, at 6:30-9:30 p.m. and will be open to the public on Saturday, February 2nd, and Sunday, February 3rd, from 12:00-3:00 p.m.

During all three days, a Gallery Talk will be provided by Laurie Szilvagyi, and several artists will be available to share their project experience as well. Red takes you into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and chronicles his two-year struggle to complete the largest and most lucrative commission in the history of modern art – a set of dark red murals for Manhattan’s exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. As Rothko’s young assistant gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the possibility that his crowning achievement as an artist might also be his artistic undoing. Set during the changing cultural landscape of the early 1960s, John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play is a snapshot of a brilliant artist at the height of his fame. Red is hailed as “intense and exciting” by The New York Times.

John Logan’s acclaimed Tony Award-winning drama “Red” will paint the Carousel Theatre stage January 31 to February 17, 2013. The production is sponsored by the Clayton Foundation with additional support from the Mildred Haines and William Elijah Morris Lecture Endowment Fund. It contains mature language, herbal cigarette smoking and will run approximately 1 ½ hour with no intermission.

Becoming the Volunteer State, a traveling exhibition of the Tennessee State Museum, Nashville will be on display in the East Tennessee History Center from January 28, 2013 through May 19, 2013.

There will be a preview for ETHS members from 2:00-4:00PM, Sunday, January 27, 2013 and a Brown Bag Lecture and Gallery Tour with exhibit curator Myers E. Brown II, at noon at the East Tennessee History Center on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.

Want to learn a new language for the New Year? Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, TN is offering a beginning and an advance beginner Cherokee language class on the following Mondays, January 28, February 4, 11, & 18, from 6:30 – 9 p.m. The cost of the class is $40 for all four evenings. If you have taken the class before with the museum a discount of $5 will be given. The class will be taught by Shirley Oswalt and Mary Brown who are members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indian.
