The Knoxville Film & Music Festival is set to kick off on June 1. The festival, which spans 15 days from June 1 - 15, will feature over 80 bands, 7 feature films, and 40 short films. It will take place in nearly a dozen different downtown venues. The festival has been recognized by Mayor Rogero and June 1 will now be the Knoxville Film & Music Festival Day throughout the city of Knoxville.

The music events run from June 1 - 9 and will feature three outdoor concerts, a showcase from local recording label Dracula Horse Records, an evening of jazz co-produced with the Knoxville Jazz Festival and the outdoor fundraiser for Tour for the Cure known as Knox Gives. Musical acts ranging from hip hop to jazz, EDM to heavy metal and all points in between will be featured. Headliners include Those Darlins, On My Honor, Flux Pavilion, Sons of Fathers, and The Kingston Springs.

The film events kick off on June 10 with panel discussions hosted by Women in Film Knoxville. Other film events include two evenings of Films that Rock, a series devoted to the fusion of music and film with films like Big Easy Express and Shut Up and Play the Hits, an evening of Horror Rock Operas co-produced with the Knoxville Horror Festival, and a very special screening of the documentary Hollywood to Dollywood where 20% of the box office proceeds will be donated to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Short films will be the focus of the Competitive Video Music Awards and the Knoxville 24 Hour Film Festival. June 13 is the screening and awards show for the Competitive Video Music Awards, a competition pairing bands and filmmakers for the ultimate music video experience. The festival will conclude with the 4th Annual Knoxville 24 Hour Film Festival, a screening of 30 films created by local filmmakers in a 24 hour time period. The evening kicks off on the Red Carpet of the Historic Bijou Theatre and concludes with a special Awards Ceremony after the last film screening of the evening.

The festival will also feature a one hour radio show during the music portion of the festival, June 3-7 on 106.1 the River, from 8-9pm. Special performances and interviews will be streamed live throughout the festival on www.knoxvillefilms.com. The “Talk is Cheap Tour” takes place in Crossville’s Stone Memorial High School Auditorium. Now’s the time to buy tickets, for the day of this storytelling funfest is fast approaching. Laugh along with four of our favorite storytellers: Bill Landry, Sam Venable, Jim Claborn, and Elizabeth Rose.

During their two-hour performance, the four storytellers first introduce each other with some opening shenanigans. Then each storyteller has their own spotlight time, followed by a group free-for-all finale of “encore” stories. Bill Landry confirms, “We all get along very well, and it’s a two-hour laugh fest, believe me. The hardest heart cannot keep a straight face.” Bill Landry notes, “The tour has always been partnered with non-profit organizations. In addition to getting paid, we have helped raise thousands of dollars for our host organizations. We’re looking forward to our Crossville performance. The ‘Talk is Cheap Tour’ stars some of the cheapest performers around!”

General Admission tickets are $15, and Reserved Seat tickets are $25, which includes a Meet and Greet backstage at 6:00 p.m. Unless the tickets are sold-out, they will also be available the evening of the performance at Stone Memorial High School, which is located in Crossville (Cook Road, Exit 320 off I-40).

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture will celebrate a free family friendly birthday party featuring activities, games, crafts, refreshments, door prizes, and a photo booth. This birthday celebration marks the 50th anniversary of the museum’s official dedication, June 1, 1963. This family friendly event will feature activities related to the museum’s permanent and temporary exhibits, providing children the chance to try out prehistoric tools, create an Egyptian Pharaoh’s headdress, play pin-the-tooth on the dinosaur, identify birds, and complete an object scavenger hunt. Prizes will be given to McClung Museum “explorers” who complete activity “passports” during the event. A photo booth will allow visitors to take memorable photos with friends and family members.

Free museum memberships and door prizes will be given away throughout the afternoon for both adults and children. Refreshments will also be provided courtesy of ARAMARK. Reservations are not required. Admission is free. Free parking is available in front of the museum on Circle Park Drive and also in adjacent university lots.

The District Gallery is pleased to present Ebb and Flow: New Work by Nancy Lloyd-Hooker and Cal Breed. This exhibit brings together the work of two artists, both greatly influenced by the landscape around them. Oil painter Nancy Lloyd-Hooker and glass artist Cal Breed constantly visit the past in their works, evolve them into something new and experimental, and revisit the past again. It is this ebb and flow--in the ideas behind the works and in the creative process itself--that drives the aesthetic vision of these artists.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 31 from 5:30-8 p.m. The show continues through June 29.

In this side-splitting comic romp about marriage, career, divorce and love, local veteran Theatre Knoxville actors return to the stage. Mark Palmer is the suspicious husband with a career driven wife played by real life spouse, Windie Wilson. Tony Mendez and Freddi Birdwell play the divorced best friends. Cheri Compton plays the title role of Beth whose motives may be suspect. The cast is rounded out by Garry Mullins in a surprise role. Directed by Theatre Knoxville Board member, Courtney Woolard, this comedy is as fast paced as any French farce.

Knoxville-based senior theatre troupe, The Silver Stage Players, will host the Darnell Players from Atlanta, GA. The two senior-centered troupes will perform together for three performances of "The Soundtrack of Our Lives: original biographical stories illustrated with music and pictures.” Performances will take place Friday, May 31 at 1:00 PM at the John T. O'Connor Senior Center on Winona St. and 7:00 PM at the Beck Cultural Center, and also Saturday, June 1 at 7:00 PM at the Broadway Academy of Performing Arts (BAPA). A meet-&-greet reception with light refreshments will follow the performances at O'Connor and BAPA.

The Silver Stagers first met The Darnell Players at the bi-annual Senior Theatre USA Festival in Baltimore in 2008. They met again in 2012 at a New Orleans festival and began a collaboration based on their shared experience in storytelling performance. “The Soundtrack of Our Lives” is the result of months of work that became the first collaboration between the two seniors-only troupes.

Admission for all performances is free, with $5 suggested donation. All proceeds from Friday evening's performance will go towards the Beck Cultural Center.
