CANDORO ROCKS, a South Knoxville Fall Festival to benefit the Historic Candoro Marble Building, will bring together marble sculptures and crafts, musicians and vendors, and Coach Johnny Majors.

With great anticipation of the re-opening of the Henley Street Bridge... community volunteers are giving their time and talents for a homecoming reunion to encourage everyone to re-discover South Knoxville and support the preservation of the Candoro Marble Building. On the National Register of Historic Places and covered floor to ceiling in marble, it currently serves South Knoxville as a place for art, yoga, education and celebrations.

The "First Friday" on October 4, will be a Reception/Exhibit 5:00 – 8:00 pm with former UT football Coach Johnny Majors and his family as special guests. All are invited to this free event. The exhibit will showcase works by Albert Milani, Candoro's beloved master carver, including his memorial sculpture of Bill Majors, Johnny's brother. Also shown will be marble objects made by the craftsmen who worked at Candoro from the 1920s through the 1970s.

CANDORO ROCKS on Saturday, October 5, from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm. The celebration continues with live music on two stages featuring local favorites such as The Grassroots Gringos and The Meltones . Visitors can tour the historic building with the exhibits, listen to great local music, and enjoy treats from the Candoro Café and other vendors.

Community Television of Knoxville (CTV), in partnership with the Arts & Culture Alliance, is proud to present Live! from First Friday, a live remote broadcast during First Friday receptions in downtown Knoxville. For the first time, CTV has the ability to do extended live shoots, so they are using this new opportunity to focus on local non-profit galleries (including the Emporium Center, the University of Tennessee Downtown Gallery, and Art Market Gallery). Live! from First Friday will include preview of the exhibitions and artwork, music from the jazz jam sessions in the Black Box at the Emporium, interviews with artists, musicians, and gallery preparators, and patrons enjoying the receptions. Following a successful pilot run during the August receptions, CTV will broadcast on subsequent First Fridays: October 4, November 1, and December 6. The public may view a live stream on First Fridays at www.ctvknox.org, and it is also available on iPhones and iPads. The program is re-aired on the following Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.

In January 1788, the first of the British prison ships arrive at Botany Bay, Australia and settle the penal colony at Port Jackson, the site of current-day Sydney. Many of the prisoners have committed minor crimes and their wardens are military men who fought and lost the war against the American colonies. When hope and supplies run low, a lieutenant tries to increase morale by staging a comedy using the convicts as the cast. Based on real events, this award-winning drama is an evocative look at a moment in history--the founding of a nation--and an inspiring tale about the transforming power of theatre. This production is directed by Calvin MacLean and is recommended for high school and up. It contains strong language and brief nudity.

Sunday, October 20: Dinner at Boyd’s Jig & Reel, recently featured on CNN as 100 Places to Eat Like a Local, followed by a Ghost Tour of Knoxville’s Old City District, the once disorderly wild bar scene of Knoxville.

Guests should arrive at the dinner locations between 6:00–6:30 p.m. to have an opportunity to meet the tour guides, mix and mingle. Dinner will begin at 6:30, followed by the Ghost Tour from 8:30–10:30 p.m.

Blount Mansion will host an exhibit opening from 5:30-7:30pm entitled Furniture on the Frontier, a showing of the Blount Mansion’s finest collection pieces on display at the Blount Mansion Visitors Center. Admission is free with light appetizers and a special gift for our members. Blount Mansion is currently closed to the public for a historic restoration and preservation project; the Visitors Center remains open Tuesday-Saturday 9:30-5 with the exception of Game Days in Volunteer country. This exhibit, Furniture on the Frontier, will be on display for the duration of the closure and is always free to the public, with a suggested donation! Come and see some of William Blount’s most valuable possessions and a wonderful example of the splendor of the Blount’s during the founding of Knoxville. Blount Mansion is the home of William Blount, Tennessee’s only signer of the United States Constitution, as well as where the Tennessee State Constitution was drafted and signed. It will be an opportunity for all Knoxville citizens to learn about their vital historical importance in the founding of our government. Blount Mansion is Knoxville's only National Historic Landmark given by the National Park Service and is the oldest house museum in Knox County. It is owned and operated by the Blount Mansion Association, Inc., a nonprofit, educational organization.

Weave your way to the Bagwell Center for Media and Art at Pellissippi State Community College and gain a new appreciation of an Appalachian heritage craft, basket weaving. “A Celebration of Baskets” by the Foothills Craft Guild Basket Weavers is on display at the Bagwell Gallery with an opening reception 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. The event is free, and the community is invited. “The Foothills Craft Guild exhibit will present original work created by guild members, along with examples of work done by a special guest,” said Jennifer Brickey, an art instructor at Pellissippi State. “A Celebration of Baskets” features the work of Pam Parham, a Shaker-basket weaver from Sevierville. According to Virgil Davis, a Pellissippi State adjunct faculty member and also a guild member, the basket exhibit pays homage to a timeless Appalachian craft, as well as introduces traditional and modern weaving techniques. Like Parham, Davis creates Shaker baskets. Whether baskets, furniture or architecture, Shaker style is intended for longevity and usefulness. The display includes not only Shaker pieces but also nesting baskets, Nantuckets with solid wood bases and lids, and Appalachian berry baskets, which were traditionally made quickly, on site, from carved poplar bark. Heritage basketry is joined in the exhibit by more modern creations. The display is meant to encourage visitors to be conscious of space and enclosures and to find beauty in everyday items.

“A Celebration of Baskets” is one of the events that make up Pellissippi State’s arts series, “The Arts at Pellissippi State.” The series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts. The musical play is based on the 1998 film Mulan by Walt Disney Pictures. Mulan is set in China during the Han Dynasty. The film's title character, Fa Mulan, is the only daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou. She impersonates a man and takes her father's place during a general conscription to counter a fictitious Hun invasion led by Shan Yu. Along with her guardian dragon Mushu, her captain, Li Shang, a lucky cricket, "Cri-kee," and her companions, Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po, she battles the invading Hun army.
