One night each year, Bijou friends and fans come together to toast this vibrant arts, music, and cultural venue in East Tennessee. The 2014 Bijou Jubilee! supported by Ole Smoky Moonshine will once again take place in the historic Bijou Theatre where we are "getting the band back together" to "rock the house"! All original members of the beloved Knoxville native band, Gran Torino will reunite for one night only on the U.S. Cellular Stage. In addition to this special performance, there will be an exclusive VIP Sound Check party happening prior to the show for just 150 lucky people. There will also be a fantastic live and silent auction of goodies from several local businesses along with signed posters, and musical instruments from some of the hottest touring bands today!

Marble Springs: Herb Lore Workshop

Marble Springs State Historic Site will host a hands-on herb lore workshop with Jim Buckenmyer on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 11:00am until approximately 2:00pm with a lunch break. Participants should bring their own lunches. Without access to modern conveniences and drug stores, people on the frontier often had to depend on knowledge of plants that they found or grew themselves to treat various illnesses. Jim Buckenmyer will demonstrate the medicinal and culinary uses of various herbs common on the frontier. Buckenmyer is a longtime member of the Governor John Sevier Memorial Association and participant in the reenacting community with much experience in late-18th and early-19th century material culture.
The cost is $10 per person, and the money will go toward educational programming at Marble Springs. Participation will be limited to 20 individuals. To register, call 865-573-5508 or email marblesprings@gmail.com. The cut-off for registration will be Wednesday, March 12.

The Rose Center Council for the Arts with the Student Advisory Council: Geekin’ Out Symposium

Ready to get your geek on? The Rose Center Council for the Arts with the Student Advisory Council will be hosting its first ever Geekin’ Out Symposium! This event will target high school and middle school students so that they can experience two days of Visual Arts, Forensics Speech and Debate, Theatre, Dance, and Vocal Performance in a collegiate template.
The event will begin on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 5PM till 9PM in Prater Hall. Friday night will be offering snacks, tours of the historic Rose Center, college booths, and performances/exhibits by Saturday’s teachers.
Classes will begin on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 12PM till 9PM. Saturday will be filled with a wide variety of classes for the students, door prizes, and a pizza dinner. Classes range from drama offering of “Cold Readings: Audition Nightmare or Actor’s Best Friend?” to visual art offering of “Not Your Oldfart Art”, from dance offering of “The Barre and Butter of Ballet: A Class for Beginners” to vocal offering of “Loud and Clear: Healthy Voice Habits for Singers and Non-Singers Alike”. Each class is taught and designed by a college student or recent college grad. The aim is to not only educate the community’s youths about the arts, but encourage students to pursue the arts in higher education.

Appalachian Arts Craft Center: Spring Porch Sale

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its Spring Porch Sale starting Thursday, March 13, and running for about two weeks. The Porch Sale, held each Spring and Fall, features marked down stock, seconds, student crafts and unjuried work by members of the Craft Center. It’s an excellent time to get great deals. Baked goods will also be available for purchase.
The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been fulfilling its mission by promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for over 40 years.
