Surrealism Lives at UT! Surrealist Symposium Brings Renowned Authors, Art, Films and More to Knoxville from April 4-7
April 7—Surrealism Symposium (poetry, translation, Dadaist field trip, scholarly)
Noon-1, 1210-1211 McClung. Opening Acts: Neglected Surrealists and Surrealist Strategies of Composition, with Jonathan Eburne and Kristi Maxwell.
1:30 pm: Dadaist Field Trip with Beauvais Lyons at Europa and the Bull. Jackets and ties for the men, hats and heels for the women.
3-4 pm: Surrealist poetry reading, with Bill Zavatsky, Marilyn Kallet, and special appearance by Rimbaud. Hodges Library Auditorium.
7 pm: Why Surrealism Matters, with Mark Polizzotti of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Mary Ann Caws.

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: PRINCIPAL QUARTET

The KSO’s Principal Quartet will take center stage for April’s Chamber Classics concert performing Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 64, No. 5 in D Major “The Lark.†This will be followed by Villa Lobos’ String Quartet No. 1, A99 and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, “Death and the Mainden.†Principal Quartet members include: Gordon Tsai, violin; Edward Pulgar, violin; Kathryn Gawne, viola; and Andy Bryenton, cello.

American Museum of Science and Energy: Penny4Arts... and Science Sunday

On the first Sunday of each month, the American Museum of Science and Energy will open its doors to Knox County students for $0.01*. Tour AMSE’s permanent exhibit galleries; The Story of Oak Ridge, Exploration Station, The World of the Atom,Y-12 and National Defense, Earth Energy Resources, and The Flattop, explore its temporary exhibits, experience the hair raising demonstration Atoms & Atom Smashers, and more. *All children ages 5-15 must be accompanied by a paying adult (age 18 and older) in a ratio not to exceed three children per one adult. UT School of Music Open House

The School of Music will be holding an Open House Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Registration begins at 1:30 in the lobby of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center.
The Open House is for students who want to major or minor in music and are interested in learning more about our programs, ensembles, and the possibility of applying and auditioning for entrance into the School of Music.
High school students, transfer students, and parents are invited to come and learn more about what the UT School of Music has to offer. Teachers are also invited and encouraged to attend.
The program for the afternoon will include: performances by UT School of Music ensembles, meetings with our faculty, panel discussions on degree programs, auditions, scholarships, UT admissions, financial aid, and housing.

Group Bike Ride with Ben Sollee

Musician Ben Sollee, who has received media coverage from outlets including NPR and Rolling Stone for his penchant for doing his concert tours by bike, will lead a group bike ride from Market Square through the public greenway system on Sunday, April 6. Participants will meet at the bell on Market Square at 11 am and the ride will begin at 11:30, culminating at the Knoxville Botanical Garden & Arboretum (where Sollee will perform as part of the Rhythm n' Blooms Festival later in the day). The Arts at Pellissippi State: Unnecessary Farce

Pellissippi State Community College presents “Unnecessary Farce,” the new classic American farce, the first two weekends of April. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Tickets are available at www.pstcc.edu/tickets.
“Unnecessary Farce” is the tale of a police sting gone awry after a bumbling mayor, a pair of lusty civil servants and an incomprehensible Scottish hit man are thrown together. “I guarantee this will be the funniest play you see this year,” said Charles R. Miller, Theatre program coordinator and Liberal Arts professor.
“Unnecessary Farce” is one of the events that make up The Arts at Pellissippi State. The series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts.
