The Zombies infiltrated the airwaves with the sophisticated melodies, breathy vocals, choral back-up harmonies and jazzy keyboard riffs of their 1960’s hit singles like She’s Not There and Tell Her No. Ironically, the group broke-up in 1968 just prior to achieving their greatest success – the chart-topping single Time of the Season. Decades later, the Zombies have resurrected & 2013 marked a major year for the band, with three tours, the release of Breathe Out, Breathe In & the announcement of their 2014 nomination for the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to host a monthly series featuring artists demonstrating their work and discussing their inspirations and processes. The series, entitled “Time Well Spent: Inspiration at Lunch”, is free and open to the public, and guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch. The next presentation in the series takes place on Wednesday, April 16, from 12:00-1:00 PM with artist David Anthony Harman, a native of Dallas, Texas pursuing his MFA at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Harman will discuss his oil paintings, which were recently featured in a solo exhibition at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in January-February 2014. The presentation will take place at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, in downtown Knoxville. Parking is available at metered spots on the Gay Street viaduct or in the parking lot on Jackson Avenue caddy-corner from the Emporium.

David Anthony Harman received his BA in Painting from the University of Dallas in Texas. He has held solo or two-person exhibitions at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Gallery and Gallery 1010 of Knoxville, Belmont Hotel, Capital One Headquarters, Mokah Gallery, and Sally Taylor Gallery in Texas. His work has appeared in group shows in Tennessee, Illinois, New York, and Texas.

From food riots of the Industrial Revolution to the whole foods movement today, food politics are making headlines Dr. John Bohstedt discusses the politics of hunger at the Library's monthly lunch and learn program.

Dr. John Bohstedt’s passionate interest in the politics of hunger is both historical and modern. As a University of Tennessee history professor, his research revealed hundreds of food riots during the Industrial Revolution. Today’s struggles over food are again making headlines. Join Bohstedt for a discussion of Food Politics: What everyone needs to know by Robert Paarlberg in Knox County Public Library’s Book Sandwiched In, Wednesday, April 16, 12:00 p.m. in the East Tennessee History Center auditorium, at 601 South Gay Street.

Bohstedt thinks most Americans are probably unaware of the offstage dramas of food politics, dramas that are brought to light in the book Food Politics. “Paarlberg shows us how politics shapes our food chain – from abundance to obesity to e-coli to organic foods to farm bills to Freedom fries.

“Food is such a basic driver of human affairs,” says Bohstedt. “I was lucky enough to teach history at UTK – the histories of England, Ireland, the World, and especially – riots. As I studied food riots in early modern England, I found that customary episodes of crowd violence were a form of bargaining between the common people and their rulers, indeed a first draft of the welfare state. Like ‘our’ recent food riots of 2008, they were politics from the gut where hunger meets outrage.”

The discussion will continue on May 21 when Joan Hemingway, University of Tennessee’s W.P. Toms Distinguished Professor of Law, will explore ways to build a more cooperative, humane, and positive future detailed in the book Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business by John Mackey.

On June 18 Dean Rice, Knox County Chief of Staff, will share author George Friedman’s predictions for the future as he reviews The Next 100 Years: A forecast for the 21st century.

The public is invited to join the conversation. Bring your favorite sandwich or pick up something from a downtown restaurant. Copies of the books are available at the Library if you'd like to read one before the program.

Poets for Preservation is a forthcoming spring poetry series presented by Knox Heritage and eight local poets in April and May of 2014. Native Knoxville poets, most residing in the area for 30 years, will perform engaging works about history, home, and new beginnings in celebration of the opening of Historic Westwood at 3425 Kingston Pike. Poets will read in pairs on Saturdays at 3 p.m. in April and May as listed below. Refreshments will be served, and guests are welcome to look around the newly restored mansion after the readings.

Recipient of the 2014 Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage Artist of the Year Award, Andrea Wilson will have a solo exhibition in the Loggia Gallery at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts. We are delighted to announce the return of the Foothills Craft Guild for our next full length exhibit. Everyone is invited to attend the opening reception from 6:30 – 8:00 PM on Friday, April 11. The Foothills Exhibit will display a wide variety of skills by about 25 participating artists. Most of the works on display will be for sale. Expect to see pottery, handmade books, jewelry, block prints, weaving, needle felting, spinning, works in wood, photography, and much more! From 10 AM to 4 PM on most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the exhibit, at least one artist per day will be on hand to demonstrate his or her craft and to talk to visitors about the show. We are pleased to present this show as a Dogwood Arts Featured Art Exhibit. Kathie Odom leaves the anatomy of her paintings exposed and allows light to diffuse translucently from the first wash to the thicker oils, showing different textures, birthing life. Subtle detailing coupled with loose brush strokes invite the viewer beneath into an aliveness not so apparent on the surface. Almost exclusively Kathie’s compositions are places where the possibility of life exists: barn, nest, field, dwelling, bud, shed…the vision of Home.
